Book Description

December 2007
"Nurturing Attachments" combines the experience and wisdom of parents and carers with that of professionals to provide support and practical guidance for foster and adoptive parents looking after children with insecure attachment relationships. It gives an overview of attachment theory and a step-by-step model of parenting which provides the reader with a tried-and-tested framework for developing resilience and emotional growth.Featuring throughout are the stories of Catherine, Zoe, Marcus and Luke, four fictional children in foster care or adoptive homes, who are used to illustrate the ideas and strategies described, the book offers sound advice and provides exercises for parents and their children, as well as useful tools that supervising social workers can use both in individual support of carers as well as in training exercises. This is an essential guide for adoptive and foster parents, professionals including health and social care practitioners, clinical psychologists, child care professionals, and lecturers and students in this field.

This review is from: Nurturing Attachments: Supporting Children Who Are Fostered or Adopted (Paperback)
Wow, I can't believe no one else has yet written a review of this book. As a child psychologist who works primarily with foster and adopted children and their families, this book is one of my top recommendations. While many books address the issue of attachment, few do so in a manner that truly helps parents understand how to facilitate the process with their child. This book, on the other hand, describes the process in great depth, helping parents to better appreciate how to strengthen attachment relations with their child.

Our knowledge of how to effectively treat children with attachment issues has grown substantially in recent years. This book includes information on how to implement effective mental health treatment to foster and adopted children and their families. As such, it is a must-have for any clinician who works with this population.

Christopher J. Alexander, Ph.D. (Author, 'Diagnosis, Assessment, and Treatment of Foster and Adopted Children; A Guide for Parents and Practitioners,' 2009).
