Nurturing Massage for Pregnancy is one of the most comprehensive books available for massage students and licensed massage therapists who treat pregnant, laboring, and postpartum clients. The author is a highly skilled perinatal massage instructor who is also a registered nurse, childbirth educator, and doula. Written in clear and direct language, this useful guide offers step by step instructions for hundreds of techniques useful during the pregnancy, labor, and postpartum periods, including general techniques and those specific to common complaints. While focused on general Swedish massage, the book also integrates myofascial release, lymphatic drainage, acupressure, and reflexology, as well as complementary bodywork methodologies such as the use of breath and visualizations, stretches, hydrotherapy, and aromatherapy. Contraindications and precautions are examined thoroughly, health intakes forms are discussed with sample forms pictured, and case studies help highlight concerns and considerations. Video clips are available online for viewing specific technique demonstrations.

The text includes:

  • Insert boxes including Self-Care Tips for the Mother, Massage Therapist Tips, Traditional Birth Practices, How the Partner can Help, and Dispelling Myths.
  • Review questions and learning objectives to help focus the reader's understanding of the material.
  • Video clips of techniques and concepts, indicated in the book with an icon directing the reader to the online companion Website.
  • Common complaints for each phase of the perinatal cycle.
  • Seven chapters on pregnancy, three on labor, and three on postpartum.
  • Online appendices with resources for the practitioner and a quick list of contraindications.
  • Over 100 photographs and line drawings

Exciting, fun and a must-read! As a massage therapist who has worked with many pregnant clients,
I have found Nurturing Massage for Pregnancy to be the best resource available to support that work.
Focused in content and design, the book is easy to follow, highly detailed and researched, with great care.
There are photos and drawings that really bring the work to life. This book is a live, experiential document with video
content online that is connected to specific techniques in the book.
Seeing these techniques being practiced has really increased my confidence. I have all the
pregnancy massage books that are available, including the latest new
texts, and this book, without question is clearly superior. Nurturing Massage for Pregnancy is
required reading for anyone working with pregnant clients.

The book helps you understand what is going on physiologically,
emotionally, spiritually, and pathologically during pregnancy so that
you can make informed decisions about what kind of touch is
appropriate depending on the client's condition, and confirms that at
least some sort of touch--even if it is just to rub a shoulder or hold
a hand-- is appropriate at any time of pregnancy, labor, postpartum,
no matter what risk condition they may have, while helping you
understand what kind of precautions you may need to take or consider.

The author has worked as a labor and delivery nurse, teaches a
maternity massage certification course, and has made several films
about touch, pregnancy and birth, so her information is up to date,
based in vast amount of experience and research, and to-the-point.

As a massage therapist who specializes in pregnancy, labor and postpartum massage, I've read many different texts guiding LMTs in massaging pregnant clients, and I believe this is the best book available! The photographs and easy-to-follow explanations provide information that is useful to any bodyworker, from recent graduates to therapists seasoned in pregnancy massage. This book helped me to better understand pregnant women's physical and emotional experience as it relates to touch and taught me several new techniques for supporting women through the quickly-evolving, radical changes of pregnancy. I love that the book is evidence-based and dispels many of the fear-based myths surrounding pregnancy massage--while it is educational on the topic of contraindications, the focus is definitely on all the support you can give a pregnant client. Nurturing Massage for Pregnancy also helped me to offer mamas-to-be lots of proactive tips for relieving discomfort and preparing for labor that they can do outside of our massage sessions. If you want to be comfortable massaging the occasional pregnant client who comes your way, if you specialize in maternity massage, and definitely if you are teaching a pregnancy massage class, I HIGHLY recommend this text.
