5.0 out of 5 stars Role of Women in Society, June 8, 2008
This review is from: Nurturing the Nations: Reclaiming the Dignity of Women in Building Healthy Cultures (Paperback)
Darrow Miller has courageously illumined a subject that the Christian Church has neglected for centuries, which has held women in bondage and kept nations impoverished --- the lie that men are superior to women!

The author writes from a Biblical, Christian worldview of God, man, woman, and nation building. Miller historically traces the abuse and hatred of women from philosophical, cultural, and religious views and directs the reader to the Bible and God's transformational view of women and His purpose for them to nurture healthy cultures. The premise of this book is if women are respected and ennobled as co-laborers with men in their divine role as nurturers, they are liberated to help build strong, healthy families and communities. As the family goes, so goes the nation. Sexuality, feminism, the mystery of the Trinity, and education are just a few of the topics addressed.

This book has the potential for providing insight and healing for both men and women. It is a "must have" for the Church, for those involved with poverty and community development, and for those who teach worldview. "Nurturing the Nations" would be an excellent handbook for family life studies and both men's and women's Bible studies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Equal in being, diffent in function, May 2, 2008
This review is from: Nurturing the Nations: Reclaiming the Dignity of Women in Building Healthy Cultures (Paperback)
Darrow Miller has written a clear, concise, insightful, Biblical case for restoring and upholding the dignity of women--for the betterment of society at large. He ties the wrong views and treatment of women with the causes of much of the world's poverty.

His presentation of God's view of men and women, as revealed in the Bible, is simple and compelling--they are equal in being, diverse in function. He shows the biblical basis for understanding God as Trinity and as a model for the complementarian view of men and women.

I found personal correction for my own understanding--despite years of Christian teaching on this topic. It will certainly encourage women who have suffered from male-centric worldviews and also challenge men and women who have accepted or compromised with ultra-feminist or sexist perspectives.

I ordered 3 more copies before even finishing the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Women: Created for His Glory, April 6, 2011

This review is from: Nurturing the Nations: Reclaiming the Dignity of Women in Building Healthy Cultures (Paperback)
Darrow Miller has brilliantly organized this book in such a manner that it takes the reader on a journey. A journey that begins with an agonizing and painful realization of war: war against women. He takes us through history to see the abuse, the crushing and the disappearance of women due to various cultural beliefs and religious practices. This is both shocking and heart wrenching, preparing a longing in the heart for God's burden and vision for His female creation.
With clarity and precision, using charts and graphs, Miller establishes the value of a Biblical worldview. The Trinitarian model and Biblical foundation guide the reader into the truths of God's ultimate intention for the woman.
Woman, as well as man, created in God's image for God's individual purposes. This truth is astoundingly transformational! "Imago Dei" for woman!
Through the final part of this journey, the reader is ushered through the pages of God's story; from creation to the Bride of Christ, from the fall to the heights of purpose and glory throughout eternity, from a slave to a liberated woman who has the divine right and call to nurture the nations.
In our own marriage, my husband and I have found within this book a tremendous substance to deepen our lives together. In working with some severely abused women, I have seen the principle of dignity, honor, purpose along with the understanding of God's intention heal, encourage and bring liberty to the hearts and minds of both women and men.
Nurturing the Nations is a "must" for teenagers and adults, for leaders and laymen, for singles and for marriages. Buy it. Read it. Use it for His Glory with whomsoever God places in your life. It WILL bring healing and transformation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nurturing the Nations Fantastic Book, December 28, 2008
This review is from: Nurturing the Nations: Reclaiming the Dignity of Women in Building Healthy Cultures (Paperback)
Nurturing the Nations Fantastic Book,
This is a great book that incorporates many of Darrow Millers previous ideas but all designed around women and their place in the world.

I really resonated on chapter 7 and 8 where he talks about the Trinity and how it was central to our world view as well as how we view women.

The idea that there is oneness and manyness that that there needs to be unity between men and women but that they have their separate functions to preform. An that Christian theology confirms both unity and diversity.

It was new for me to learn about Plato and Aristotle and where they fit in the whole person discussion.

It was good to be reminded of the triune God who is self-denial and self-sacrifice. Well worth the time to read and digest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courageous, comprehensive, and exceedingly thoughtful!, November 20, 2011

This review is from: Nurturing the Nations: Reclaiming the Dignity of Women in Building Healthy Cultures (Paperback)
Darrow Miller's historical and contemporary examination of the deplorable abuse of women is a painful and necessary read for every pastor and Christian leader. No society or setting will escape conviction of their contribution to the plight of women.

The Church, and therefore the world, is largely ignorant of the source and purpose of sexual identity as revealed in God's Word. Mr. Miller presents a clear worldview framework that is helpful in identifying lies and misconceptions related to both femininity and masculinity. In his characteristic way, he provides practical graphics which compare and contrast the major philosophic expressions of the relationship between man and woman, as well as the compromising approaches adopted by professing Christians to resolve male-female issues.

This book is a rich resource and poignant challenge to every Christian man and woman who desires to prosper in the fullness of God's intention in the beginning when He created us male and female in His image and likeness. The enemy has strategically and viciously attacked Christian civilization through his war against women.

Mr. Miller powerfully argues that nations cannot survive and flourish unless the dignity of women is restored. Married couples, mothers and fathers, churches, and nations will be transformed by prayerfully taking to heart the revelation in Nurturing the Nations.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book profoundly impacted my life., September 12, 2011
This review is from: Nurturing the Nations: Reclaiming the Dignity of Women in Building Healthy Cultures (Paperback)
I have not found another book that speaks so clearly and so simple on the biblical foundations of human sexuality as "Nurturing the Nations." By reading this book, it does not take theologian or pastor to understand not only how God created man and woman, the simplicity of the authority and power of submission found in the Trinity but also showed me the terrifying reality that other women live whose dignity has been broken.

This book not only has tremendous tools for my work, but has profoundly impacted my life, It has helped me to be a woman in a different way, to understand my femininity as a great value and it has challenged me to find appropriate ways to share these lessons for children and adolescents with whom I work most of my time. I also concluded that it exquisitely combines biblical concepts with excellent research.

I recommend this reading to anyone who wants to know the will of God in creating man in his image, and who wants to understand the significance of sexuality. This book is focused on the biblical concepts regarding gender, and teaches the great benefits that come for a society when the dignity of women is restored. If you feel called by God to transform culture, especially if you are a woman who is broken, and your dignity and value has been trampled, please read this book.

This book could be well used to teach God's principles of human sexuality at the university or theological seminary level.

5.0 out of 5 stars We need more of this from the church, June 9, 2011

This review is from: Nurturing the Nations: Reclaiming the Dignity of Women in Building Healthy Cultures (Paperback)
What Darrow Miller did with his work "Discipling the Nations" for those involved in transformational development he now does for those of us involved in dealing with the centuries of misunderstanding on the part of the church, of the role of women in the church and in culture building.

It is unfortunate in the region of the world in which I work, the church is as much a part of the problem (pastors love to quote Ephesians 5:22-24 but I've never heard a sermon on 5:25)as the rest of society. The majority of the women who have been cared for at El Refugio (the shelter for abused women we work with) have had previous contact with the church, one was sexually assaulted by a pastors son (then the pastor wanted a piece of the action), one had been thrown into the street after being beaten by her husband who is a pastor in one of the largest denominations, and one was seduced by the founding pastor of a well known church who had a long history of abusing his powers to take advantage of young women working at the church. During a recent forum on the realities of abuse against women we helped coordinate, a pastor rose during the question and answer phase and asked "what do women expect when they dress the way they do?"

Darrow Millers "Nurturing the Nations" is an extremely important work in helping the church capture its vital role in respecting the role of women in the church and in the prevailing culture in general. We will be implementing much of what he has written and look forward to hearing more about the fruit of his efforts.
