Nut Country reminded me of my school day visits the Texas State Fair where the JBS always had a booth. This was in the 70s. Growing up as a child of an Engineer who worked for Chance Vought, LTV, and E-Systems, I can attest to the influx of men and women from all over the country to the Dallas Metroplex who brought their brand of GOP conservatism and mixed it with the crazy conservatism of the evangelical movement. There was always such an immediacy to folks trying to 'save' me, because Eastern Orthodoxy was not understood as a Christian denomination. But I digress. The book is a quick read and really pulls together the premise that the Southern Strategy began in Dallas. I have always believed this and am glad someone has taken the time to make the case. My only complaint is the book could have been 1000 pages and I would like to see someone take Miller's work and expand it to do a more comprehensive look at what I would call the Dallas Republic (Grand Prairie to the west, Mansfield and Waxahachie to the south, Greenville/McKinney to the east, and Denton/Dension/Sherman to the north. From Jim Collins to Jim Hightower, from 1945 to 1984, with more about Clements, Hutchison and the Park Cities crowd.

Format: Hardcover
The book was a very enjoyable read. Mr. Miller brings to life the stories and characters who would make Dallas a major conservative hotbed. Mr. Miller painstakingly researches Dallas at the time of the birth of what would become the modern conservative movement. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a better understanding of how the Republican party became so conservative after World War II.

Mr. Miller's detailed research helps the history come alive. His reporting on the role that Dallas women played in shaping the Republican Party is particularly fascinating.

Elegantly written, thoroughly researched, and analytically insightful, Edward Miller's "Nut Country" recreates the world of right wing Dallas in the late 1950s and early 1960s with nuance and broad erudition.
