5.0 out of 5 stars Cool concepts. Nice art. September 16, 2012
Format:Paperback
Length: 0:56 Mins
Nuthin' But Mech is the book from the blog of the same title. The blog was founded by Lorin Wood and has been updated regularly by a group of talented artists, of which 31 are featured here.

This 128-page paperback features a nice variety of mech designs. Many are weapon equipped mechs but there are also those for utility purposes, some animal inspired designs and two that actually play basketball. These are all original concepts from the artists. As with mech designs, there are lots of details to see.

The art is top notch. Only a handful of pages are devoted to 3D models and renders. The rest are painted, some with sketches.

The book mentioned that this is the first installment so there's more to come.

Highly recommended to those who like robots and mech designs.

(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

4.0 out of 5 stars A top-knotch book January 1, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
First the bad; yet another Amazon purchase (we're talking six to seven items now) arrived with substantial damage. The top corner of the book (spine side) was mashed down. I can't imagine the amount of force it would have taken to crush the one end of the book that held all of the tightly-packed, glued-together pages but that level of physical abuse is exactly what was applied to the unfortunate copy of Nuthin' But Mech I received. I'm going to have to send this copy back. I'm glad this wasn't purchased as a gift. What a hassle.

The funny thing about the damage is that there was no corresponding dent to the corrugated cardboard envelope in which my book was shipped. That leads me to believe that the book was sent in damaged condition. For shame Amazon. What a terrible way to treat a loyal customer. I've arranged to have a replacement copy sent to me so I'm guessing things will turn out ok.

Now onto the good...and there's a heck of a lot of good in this book! As the title suggests its packed with all manner of mech design (humanoid, animal and vehicle) that one may have seen on the pages of the awesome Nuthin' But Mech blog. I'm not a concept artist, simply a fan of illustration in all its varied (advertising, sequential, info graphic, book, conceptual, storyboard and I'm sure I missed some) forms. And speaking as a fan there's loads in this book to serve as inspiration. I found myself hissing in amazement with almost every page I turned. What a treat!

Nuthin' But Mech reminds me a bit of the fantasy art annual, Spectrum in that it draws examples from a varied amount of incredibly talented individuals. There are some names that I recognize (Feng Zhu, TyRuben Ellingson, Marc Gabanna, Jake Parker, Kemp Remillard, Ben Mauro, etc.) and others (like Carlo Arellano and Elliot Lilly) that are new to me. This book presents all of their work in the large art section in it's middle, sandwiched in between an intro and artist bios.

Another similarity with Spectrum (in addition to the nice paper that the book is printed on) is that the majority of the art seems to be more along the lines of the finished type. The subtitle states that Nuthin' But Mech is a collection of sketches and renderings, but there's not a whole heck of a lot to see by way of sketches. There are some but again, most of the images presented impress me more as decently fleshed-out renderings (reproduced at a nice size) than as sketches or speed paintings. There are loads of 2D images and a few 3D renders but only a small amount of sketches. No matter. Its a gorgeous book full of (I think) production art so I'm not too sure how "finished" the images are but the majority of the work appears to be fairly polished. Its definitely the type of book one can admire over and over again. I however, will wait until I can get an undamaged copy of Nuthin' But Mech to study thusly. For the sake of this review I did give the book the once-over. Wish I didn't have to send it back.

Now if I have one complaint about Nuthin' But Mech, it's that its maybe a little on the short side. There were some artists (Ben Mauro, Carlo Arellano and Feng Zhu) that I thought merited larger sections. I can visit the websites of those artists, true but I still would have liked to have had more of their work in this book. Those guys are good!!

I very much hope that Nuthin' But Mech is a success as I'm eager to see a second volume. I'd also like to see more from the artists generous enough to share their work in printed form and also on the Nuthin' But Mech blog.

UPDATE: At the end of the week Amazon shipped me a new copy of Nuthin' But Mech in near perfect condition! What a speedy turnaround concerning a matter (like several others) that had my confidence in Amazon shaken a bit. I really am impressed with the way they stepped up to replace my damaged book. Wow. I'll be making more purchases from them. Nice job Amazon! This customer is quite happy.
