"Possible the Greatest Southern Rock-Roll Album EVER ",
By A Customer
This review is from: Nuthin Fancy (Audio CD)
I could'nt believe the first album way back in 1973 it was Fantastic.Just when i thought perfection was reached, here comes Nuthin' Fancy and I knew Ronnie and the Boys had reached Super stardom. the greatest form of flattery is imitation, and my band played many of these great songs.By now you can probably tell that I think Lynyrd Skynyrd's Nuthin' Fancy is the essence of what Southern Rock-Roll is all about.

Probably Skynyrd's hardest rocking album, `Nuthin' Fancy' was released in the early spring of 1975 under intense pressure from both MCA and their increasingly growing fan base. As in most cases under such conditions, when bands are forced to pump out product the results can be a bit of mixed bag. `Nuthin' Fancy' had some hard acts to follow as both of Lynyrd Skynyrd's previous records were best sellers and had established the Jacksonville gang as headliners While their third album (once again produced by Al Kooper) did have some blazing hard rock it also contained some more diverse material that came to define the overall repertoire of Skynyrd. Lead single "Saturday Night Special" is an amazing song and a personal favorite yet it seemed to contradict the band's image as this bar brawling, gun-toting good ole boy crew but its lyrics were very cautionary towards firearms. "On the Hunt", "I'm a Country Boy" and "Whiskey Rock-a Roller" were as rocking as Southern rock could be played in the mid-Seventies and as such are why I would go back to this LP over and again. However songs such as "Am I Losin'" and "Made in the Shade" were countrified blues and folk that spoke to another side of the band. While it may not rank as high as the debut or `Second Helping', `Nuthin' Fancy' is still an essential piece of Southern rock.

Saturday Night Special is a cheap hand gun that you can enter a bar with. Cheap bars are called honky tonks. Cheating women make you mad. Railroads are good places to write a song on. I'm A Country Boy, so what? If you are on the hunt, that means you are seeking foxes. Am I Losin', if you are a loser that is right. Whiskey Rock-A Roller, rock n roll and booze.
