Important Information

Indications
Food sensitivity: Our products are non-GMO and have no soy, no hexane, no gluten, and no dairy.

Ingredients
How coconut oil is processed is the key to optimizing its taste, texture, color, and aroma. Within two hours of Nutiva's coconuts being chopped, the oil is cold-pressed at below 104 degrees. Contrast this with 99 percent of the coconut oil used today in cooking and body care. First, the coconut is chopped and left to dry in the sun for days. Then the meat is scooped out and sent thousands of miles to giant oil mills where the oxidizing coco meat is refined, bleached, and/or deodorized. Ironicall

Directions
Nutritionists suggest enjoying up to 3 tablespoons of extrax-virgin coconut oil each day, so help yourself to this heavenly, creamy taste of the tropics. No refrigeration required; solid at room temperature and melts at 76 .

About the Brand

Nutiva began in 1999 as an idea in the mind of John W. Roulac, the author of four books on home composting and industrial hemp. Nutiva is the third successful business John has founded since jump-starting the modern home-composting movement in the early 1990s with his best-selling book, Backyard Composting. That book has sold more than a million copies worldwide.

Nutiva is an innovative leader in the health food industry. Since 1999, we have operated as a values-driven company dedicated to nourishing people and planet.

We're building a business characterized by high standards in all aspects of our company, from the organic farms that grow our foods, through the production, packaging, and transportation of our products, to the Nutiva associates who communicate with our retailers and the people who enjoy our products.

Our watchwords--nutritious superfoods, healthier people, and a sustainable planet--express our commitment to move beyond conventional food industry practices to embrace a bigger picture that supports the long-term well-being of humanity as a whole.

Nutiva's purpose is to produce the highest-quality organic superfoods, providing superior nutritional value to our customers while supporting sustainable agricultural practices and a fair return to the farmers on whom we depend. We donate 1% of our sales to groups that promote sustainable agriculture.

We educate people worldwide on current developments in nutritional science, organic farming, green energy, and fair trade practices within the global economy.

At Nutiva, we continually innovate so that we can better contribute to the health and happiness of our customers as well as the sustainability of our planet.

Hemp was cultivated in China more than 6,000 years ago, from a wild plant that grew in central Asia.

A Nutritional Powerhouse
Hempseed is considered by leading researchers and medical doctors to be one of the most nutritious food sources on the planet. Shelled hempseed is packed with 33% pure digestible protein and is rich in iron and vitamin E as well as omega-3 and GLA. A recent report funded by the Canadian government states that hemp protein comprises 66% high-quality edistin protein, and that hempseed contains the highest percentage of this of any plant source. Unlike soy, hemp is not genetically modified, and it doesn't contain the anti-nutritional qualities commonly found in soy.

Got Your EFAs today?
Because the human body produces no Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs), it is important that EFAs be consumed on a regular basis. It is estimated that more than 90% of Americans take in too little of one of the most important EFAs--omega-3--which is found in flax, walnuts, deep-water fish, and hempseeds. EFAs are the "good fats" that doctors recommend as part of a healthy, balanced diet. The quality of omega-3 is vital, and can be diminished by oxygen, heat, and light. Thus consume the freshest seeds possible and store them in a dark, cold environment such as a refrigerator. Nutiva obtains its seeds exclusively from Canada, and we date all our products. Great nutrition never tasted so good.

Product Description

A deliciously healthy cooking oil. Better than butter. USDA organic. Unrefined & no trans fats. Rich in lauric acid. A soothing body oil. The coconut oil myth. Coconut oil has been mistakenly described as not healthy. The fact is, coconut oil is cholesterol-free and rich in medium-chain good fats that doctors recommend. Why is it that baby formulas often include coconut oil? Because coconut is one of the world's most nourishing super foods. Nutritionists suggest enjoying up to 3 tbsp of extra-virgin coconut oil each day, so help yourself to this heavenly, creamy taste of the tropics. Nutiva's cold-pressed Coconut Oil is: Extra-virgin & pure white: not refined, deodorized or bleached! Organic: so it's free from pesticides, GMOs and hexane. Versatile: Ideal as high-heat cooking oil (up to 350 degrees), as a nutritious substitute in baking, a better-than-butter replacement on bread, vegetables or popcorn, and as a luscious oil for skin care, hair care, and massage. America needs an oil change. While doctors suggest we consume a 4:1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3, the average American diet provides a ratio of 20:1 or more - contributing to heart disease, skin disorders, and arterial inflammation. So avoid out of balance soy, corn, and canola oils with their trans fats, oxidation, and GMOs. Cook with coconut oil (with only 1% Omega-6), and use olive oil (also low in Omega-6), and hemp oil (with the perfect 3:1 Omega ratio) for unheated recipes. Nature's ideal all-purpose cooking oil. No trans or hydrogenated fat; no cholesterol or hexane. Unlike other brands, we press our coconuts within 2 hours of chopping. No refrigeration required. Solid at room temperature and melts at 76 degrees. Any coconut husk fibers at the bottom of the jar are indigenous to the processing and harmless. Coconut oil contains medium-chain good fats with 50-55% lauric acid - a healthful nutrient that supports the metabolism. Certified organic by QAI. Product of the Philippines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coconut Oil = Home Run! January 13, 2013
Size Name:54 oz
Whether you're trying to mix it into your cooking routine or use it topically, the stuff is incredible! Coconut oil, especially all natural ones, are miracle workers! They're so much healither than the alternatives. I use it so much I can't understand how I survived without it. I'm in my late 20s and I use it on my skin, in my salads, when I cook....it's so multi-faceted!!

If you go organic, you're not going to lose much if anything from brand to brand. My only suggestion is to utilize another organic oil in conjunction with the coconut oil for better results when it comes to skin and hair care. My oil of choice is almond- NOW Foods Sweet Almond Oil - 16 oz. + FREE 100% Cococare Coconut Oil - 4 fl oz. The two combined are a double whammy! Hair, skin...it's a great additive or alternative in each case. The benefits are so worth it! Almond oil has a little more depth in my hair and I think the two combined are unbeatable on my face and skin. They are girls' best friends!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Tasting Coconut Oil I've Tried: Quality is A+ October 2, 2009
Size Name:15 Ounce (Pack of 2)|Amazon Verified Purchase
Nutiva's Organic coconut oil is the best I've found. I've tried several brands, but nothing tastes as clean and pure as this. There is a definite undertone of coconut, but I like the flavor, even when frying eggs or eating it on cinnamon raisin toast. I recently had bloodwork done and my HDL (the good cholesterol) was an impressive 77---anything over 39 is considered in range; over 50 is heart protective). I attribute this great HDL number to using only coconut oil, butter, and olive oil in my cooking & drinking green tea.

Amazon's Subscribe & Save offer is a great deal; I really like the 2 pack of these smaller (15 oz) jars. We're a small household and I like keeping one jar sealed while using the other. Keep in mind that coconut oil is different than other oils--it is solid at temperatures under 76, so it will look something like shortening in the wintertime. Still tastes great and is wonderful to use in all kinds of cooking.

One more important detail: this is an organic, COLD PRESSED coconut oil. Others may be organically grown, but I've found some brands are hydrogenated to make them solid at room temperature (I won't go into all the reasons this is not a "good thing"). Suffice it to say that any coconut oil you buy should be cold pressed (and that goes for your olive oil, as well). Google to find out why...

Happy eating!

UPDATE 3/19/13: Updated the temperature threshold for melting point: it's actually 76 degrees, according to the Nutiva label (not 72 degrees as I previously guesstimated).

5.0 out of 5 stars So many uses, many benefits! December 4, 2012
Size Name:15 Ounce (Pack of 2)
I use coconut and jojoba oil for moisturizing my dry skin and since I've converted from creams to oils, my skin has never looked or felt smoother. I use it on my legs and arms mostly but it works just about everywhere.

A little goes a long way which means just a little jar will last a very long time which is great cost-wise, and with just a couple drops, my skin stays smooth all day. I will sometimes use the jojoba oil on my face in the evening as a facial moisturizer -Desert Essence Pure Jojoba Oil + FREE 100% Coconut Oil. The coconut oil on the face feels kind of greasy.

Besides that I sometimes also use it in lips -makes chap-stick feel like chalk. None of these oils ever leave any residue/stains on my pillowcase or clothes either so there is really no negatives to using these wonderful oils!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious March 4, 2007
Size Name:54 oz|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've tried two of the major coconut oil brands that I order via the internet. I've been using the oil in food and on my skin for about 5 years. I ordered this just to see how it tasted because the price was so good, if it didn't taste right, I'd just use it on my skin. It is the BEST tasting oil I've tried. Tropical Traditions, Coconut Oil Supreme pale in comparison. This is truly a coconut oil you could eat right out of the jar. If you want to try a coconut oil that tastes as good as it smells, this is it. And the price is fabulous. Yea, Nutiva and Amazon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tropical Treat December 14, 2006
By HH
Size Name:54 oz|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love this coconut oil! It has a delicate coconut aroma and flavor. I have only just started using it but have found it to be delicious when making pancakes in lieu of using butter. I have also used it as a substitute for butter when making grilled cheese sandwiches and baked sweet potatoes. It will do wonders for your hair and skin too. I especially like using it as a hot oil treatment for my hair. I mix the coconut oil with a few drops of lemon essential oil and rub it into my hair. It smells like dessert and good for my hair and scalp. Try it with your favorite essential oils!

Warning: It melts at 76F. Be careful when opening a jar that's been sitting in a warm cupboard.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a win win thing. And I even like the smell! February 24, 2007
Size Name:54 oz|Amazon Verified Purchase
The skin is a great delivery system for absorbing things into your body. So what are you putting on your skin? Read the ingredients on your handcream or body lotion. Are they good for you? Don't know? Can you even pronounce them? Let's keep it simple. Virgin organic coconut oil. Snowy white, unrefined, heavenly smell - this stuff is terrific!! Solid at room temperature, smooth and buttery and melts at 76 degrees; cook/fry with it on low heat for a healthy and fragrant alternative to all those ulgy refined oils and hydrogenated trans fats (YUCK!), use as a lighter butter or shortening alternative (there's not a lot of flavor and the smell is intoxicating); use as hand cream (rub it on - only gets greasy if you really over load the area) I use it as a body lotion all over my body (my skin feels soft and smooth like it did when I was a child), hair conditioner (a light deep conditioner); anti-fungal properties (put it between your toes for goodness sake!) make-up remover - voila! ear wax? I put a tiny bit of this on a q-tip; moist toilette wipes? ssshh... try a touch of this on your t.p. - and I could go on and on... It must be organic and virgin coconut oil - anything else is something else and unexceptable. I understand that it is fine for diets, and speeds up the metabolism (its those little medium fatty acid chains). Don't take my word for it - read all about it for yourself! And yes, I feed it to my dog and cat, my cat loves it - and he won't eat anything! Actually, I don't think that he can resist the smell, I can't! Another one of those items that I out on my favorite things list!
