5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Kitchen/Skin Product April 17, 2010
Coconut oil is antibacterial, antifungal and yummy. Use it for warm applications. Don't use it in cold applications because it solidifies around 74 degrees. In the summer (when it was always melted in the jar as it sits on the countertop), I forgot and used it in a frozen fruit smoothie and it turned into tiny hard bits. ick.
It's important to keep the jar of coconut oil pure and clean. Be sure to use a clean knife each time or move some to a small container for everyday use. We have little jars of it around the house that we designate for massage, dogs, etc. In the winter when it is solidified, just microwave a little in a microwavable jar for 15 seconds to melt. Be careful not to heat it too long - it will burn you!
It seems like we are always finding new ways to use coconut oil. If you think of ways to use it, please let me know!

EATING
- use like you would butter or shortening
fry eggs in it (on medium heat - not too high)
put on a baked sweet potato with salt and pepper (this was the first way we used it and we were hooked)
put on any vegetables
put on toast (the fancier the bread the better - like cinnamon apple toast)
- use to 'grease' bakeware (great with cornbread, cake, muffins, etc.) (apply solid oil with your hand in a baggie, or apply melted oil with a silicone brush on bakeware or appliances like a waffle maker, etc.)
- use along with another oil to pop popcorn on the stove top (i do add melted butter to the finished popcorn though)
- use in cake and brownie mixes that call for vegetable oil
- use in recipes for cookies and other homemade goodies
- use in a fry pan with a lid to warm up cold pizza (it's 10x better than microwaved!

5.0 out of 5 stars My hair's lifeline! December 27, 2009
I cherish the day that I discovered Virgin Unrefined Coconut oil. I literally buy a big 54 ounce bottle and it lasts me a year. I am black with arm pit length relaxed hair. I use this religiously. Including:

- As a deep conditioning treatment on my dry hair. I put some on the night before I'm planning to wash my hair. Throw on a plastic conditioning cap. And sleep in it overnight.

- A leave in on wet hair to help my wash and go curlier styles (I don't relax bone straight.0

- Use it every night after my daily moisturizer to lock in the moisturizer. It makes my hair ridiculously shiny. My mom saw my hair after I put some on and was like "It looks like you're wearing a wig." I think she meant that as a compliment lol. It also makes my hair feel very soft.

- To moisturize my skin and make it soft. It even helps with my thighs rubbing together when I walk (that may be tmi but ladies know what I'm talking about.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality and price - highly recommended. October 27, 2009

My husband and I have been buying Spectrum's unrefined coconut oil (not cold pressed) from a local organic food store, and decided to try this less expensive brand. What we discovered is that not only is Nutiva cheaper, but it's a better, higher quality product. Since this is cold pressed, it retains more of the fresh aroma and is whiter in color. We have not tried very many brands of coconut oil, so there's probably better ones out there. But we are more than satisfied with the quality of this oil; it really does taste better than what we had, which we thought was pretty good. The low price combined with the low shipping cost mean we save 40% over getting it from the local store - there's no reason for us to look any further.

Don't be shocked if you read that some of us eat this with a spoon (we do it with a little Splendor sprinkled on) - many people take unrefined coconut oil as a dietary supplement. Do some research and you'll see the benefits unrefined coconut oil has to offer. After reading a health book, my husband started taking it three times a day with his meals, and in 2 weeks have lost almost 10 pounds - without changing much else of what he eats/does. He does have an active life style therefore higher metabolism, so his results may not be typical (I think somehow it's easier for men to lose weight than women in general, really unfair :P). I didn't do it before because of the cost, but now at this price I'm going to order more and will begin to do the same.

I saw some reviews gave this a lower rating because the buyer didn't like the strong aroma - please note that cold pressed coconut oil will naturally have a strong scent of coconut, and it may not be for everyone.

Wow. Amazing stuff. I bought this about 2 months ago and already have used a third of the HUGE jar. My Beagle always gets hots spots on her skin. I rubbed this is her coat (which she loved)- sure she licked all over- no worries as it's all natural...just put an extra gob on her foot and she focused on that accessible spot while her body absorbed the rest of the oil. They were gone in a week. She also gets ear infections. I put a tiny bit on the ridge of her ear and rubbed her ear just like I do with the medication she gets at the vet- GONE! ***I promise it's true****

I have very long, thick (straw) hair that I absolutely destroy with coloring, flat ironing, etc. I've been drenching it in this about 2x a week and sleeping in a shower cap. When I rinse my hair off in the morning, it's soft. I rub it on my feet and put socks on every am; SOFT! I now scooped out a bunch and keep a seperate container next to my shower. It is now my after shower body oil. I DRENCH my body with it in the morning and I can honestly say that my skin (hello thighs and frightening sun damaged chest) is firmer and smoother. It's been maybe 2 months since I've been using this stuff, guys! I have so many other examples- just too much to list. What I do want everyone to know, and this is important to me, is that this brand really smells like coconut- which I love. I know with some brands, there is no smell.

I just really encourage anyone who is intrested in coconut or natural remedies to purchase this, along with one of the many books on the subject of uses of coconut.
