We were considering hip replacement surgery,
By rZ (MS) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nutramax Cosequin DS Double-Strength Chewable Tablets - 250 Count (Misc.)
February 8, 2006: We were considering hip replacement surgery for our 90 lb lab who was diagnosed with hip dysplaysia. Our vet recommended we try Cosequin DS first. We had tried similar products with no improvement and didn't expect this to work either. We were wrong. There was a marked difference in our lab's activity level within the first two weeks. Currently, he plays runs, and jumps with no pain. This product worked wonders for our dog.
UPDATE June 18, 2007: Cosequin did work wonders for our lab, but he also has Degenerative Myelopathy which was missed due to the hip dysplasia. We had never heard of this disease and didn't know the signs or symptoms to watch for. Please, if your dog is on a joint therapy product, search for Degenerative Myelopathy on the internet and familiarize yourself with the symptoms. As the disease progresses without treatment, your dog's chance for recovery and/or stabilization become less and less. The University of Florida has a lot of information on their website regarding this disease and a video depicting dogs in various stages of this disease.

Have had our two 60 and 70 lb dogs on this now for about 6 months, marked improvment in our older dog. his left rear leg shaking has improved a great deal, much more like his old self. running and playing with the younder one. (and us) I recommend. as the other review says, does not hurt. and we think helps.

Helped joint stiffness but caused vomiting...,

I gave this product to my 7 year old retriever for about 17 days but had to stop because it made her vomit. It did seem to help her joint stiffness, and she ate the tablets readily (which I mixed with her food). However, after a few days, she began to vomit several times a day within an hour or two of eating. My vet suggested I stop the cosequin to see if that would stop the vomiting--it did. I guess I'll look for another product that contains glucosamine/chondroitin and see if my dog can tolerate that.

Truly a wonder!,

Kyra, our Siberian Husky, came to us as a stray and limping very badly. Thinking she had been maybe hit by a car before we rescued her, we took her to the vet for x-rays and discovered severe hip dysplasia - one joint was barely in its socket. We consulted with a specialty vet hospital about hip replacement, and then put off the decision. In the meantime, for the last 1 1/2 years, we've been giving her Cosequin. It was only a few months before the limp was not only completely gone, but she was tearing around the house playing chase with our Golden Retriever. We had to put rugs down on our bare floors to help prevent her slipping and sliding, but she does it anyway, and it never slows her down. At the lake, she out-swims Jake and she just never tires out. (Jake doesn't have joint problems but he gets Cosequin too!) I suppose as Kyra gets older we will have to again consider the hip replacement, but I feel that is years away now. And by the way, I take the people version of this same brand!

Good Medicine for Dogs,

I have a rottweiler who broke both of her knee ligaments. She had surgery on both knees and I thought she would never be the same again. However thanks to the surgery and to Cosequin, she walks, jumps, and runs perfectly. She has to take this medication for life but its worth it. Each time she goes for re-evaluation, the vet always finds her joints in great conditions.

Seems to help - doesn't hurt!,

Although I haven't found a lot of real scientific information out there about the effectiveness of supplements on arthritis treatments, I have two dogs and a cat taking Cosequin. I don't know how much it actually helps, but it doesn't hurt, and if there's even the slightest chance it will help my "kids", well, I'll take it. They're on prescription meds, too, but the idea behind Cosequin is that it will help lubricate their joints and preserve what they've got. They like the tablets, which is great since the tablets are the size of horse pills. The worst part is the start-up month, since you have to give extra. After that, it's not so bad cost-wise. And getting the big bottles here was cheaper than at my vet.

My dog started limping, crying in pain, could not jump up on the sofa nor go up or down the stairs to the backyard or stoop to poop. I took him to the vet and he has a nerve root impingment at lumbar spine due to a calcified disc. I was given a prescription for Rimadyl twice daily for the pain and to refill as needed. After a week he was a little better, but still limping, wouldn't get up on the sofa and could barely walk down the street. I did some research on the internet and ran across this and purchased a bottle from Amazon. I can't believe the difference and not that long after starting him on it. He is running around and jumping on the sofa and going up and down the stairs and going on walks again. This stuff works. I wonder why my vet didn't mention it?

Helps my old guy,

I have a dalmatian that is about 11 years old now. When he was 10, he started having problems with his back and his back legs causing considerable pain. I brought him to the vet expecting to be told surgery or putting him down was my only option. X-rays showed an old injury (from before we got him) that could not be treated surgically. The vet put my dog on an NSAID (basically doggie ibuprofen - but it was not ibuprofen - don't remember the name of the drug, but it was prescription) and Cosequin DS. She said it can take a week or two for the Cosequin to kick in, then after a week on the NSAID to start to wean him off of the NSAID and keep him on just the Cosequin. We followed her instructions. He has been doing well for a year now. When he starts to have flare-ups, we give him an extra pill a day for a week or two then wean him back to his regular maintenance dose.
The veterinarian actually gave us the capsule version of this drug which we had a hard time getting our dog to take (Greenies Pill Pockets were a life saver - available on Amazon.com). The pills we bought at the veterinarian cost over $100 for a bottle (and I think they only had 120 capsules in them). We were glad to see that not only was it cheaper on amazon.com, but they come in a beef flavor that my dog loves. I wish I could get a subscription to it. Since the dietary supplement market is not well regulated, I don't trust many dietary supplements. My dog's veterinarian trusts this brand and that is enough for me to trust it too. Some studies have shown that some dietary supplements (human and animal) don't contain any of the active ingredient that the bottle advertises, or they contain much more or much less than the amount advertised on the bottle. There may be other brands that are cheaper, but this one works and I'm not taking a chance of putting my dog through pain to try to save a couple of bucks.

I bought this for my mom's-in-law dog. Toby is somewhere around 12 years old. He is a large mixed breed, possibly golden retriever + saint bernard + at least 3 other breeds. Toby's arthritis was so bad, that he cried while trying to get up, and he did not always got up on the first try.
About 14 days into the first bottle of cosequin, one pill in the morning, another in the evening, Toby gets up without crying in pain. He just gets up. The other day, I have seen him frolicking with grandma's other dog, a puppy named Dixie. They both RUN in the pasture. I haven't seen Toby running before that... I don't think there are any side effects to this supplement. I haven't noticed any in Toby. The dog finally lives without pain, or at least with very little pain. It amazed me that he actually run and enjoyed it. I would recommend this product for all dogs that suffer from arthritis. Stick to the recommended dosage on the bottle and marvel at the results. |
