I have used Welactin for our Golden Retriever for years. This used to be a quality product, made from real salmon oil and a single teaspoon was the correct dosage for our dog's weight. Imagine my surprise when I noticed the new packaging, saw that there is no more salmon oil used in the product, only "fish oil", and read that the required dosage is now one and one-HALF teaspoons...in other words, it will last 50% less long for the same price.

I called the company and spoke to two people, both of whom read off a script telling me that the formula was "better" but they were unable to tell me why. I know why. They now spend less to make this inferior product and expect to sell more of it since the consumer has to use 50% more. This reformulation is a peaked anemic color, not at all like their previous formulation. I intend to research other products to try to find something of the quality of their previous formulation, before greed took over. Such a shame.

We adopted a black lab from the pound with multiple issues. The vet recommended I give him the Welactin to improve his skin from allergies, shedding and dryness. I put two spoonfuls (spoon enclosed with product) in his breakfast bowl once per day. There was a noticeable result within a few days. I now have people stop me on the street and compliment him on the quality of his coat. I have not had any of the allergy issues since he has been using this product.

I was on vacation and took my dog to a vet in another state. After three years, my local vet couldn't solve the problem of my dog's ears constantly getting infections. This vacation vet said the ear condition was probably related to a skin alergy. We talked about treatments and he recommended this product. He said this would help the skin alergy and thus help make make the ear less hospitable for infections. I was skeptical, but I tried it. A month later, my dog has NO skin alergy symptoms and his ears have completely healed! (I continue the normal ear cleaning procedures including weekly flushes). Side effect: his coat is very soft & silky!

My lab is going to turn 14 the beginning of May. He has been on this product for a couple of years. I started using it because it was labeled for "old" dogs, but I also use it for one of my dogs who has a tendency to get skin allergies when she gets sneaked a food she is allergic to (she is allergic to beef, summertime cookouts can be a disaster...)
So now I have ALL my dogs on it. The omega three fatty acids help reduce inflammation, and it really improves the taste of their dog food. Obviously, because if I don't put it on they look at me like "are you forgetting something?"
I'd highly recommend this product for old and young dogs.

This oil is good but the bottle is very messy. My dogs loooooooves when I add it to his food. But when I squirt a scoopful into my dog's food, I found that the entire bottle ends up sticky all over. And this oil is VERY gooey and kind of fishy-smelling. So to avoid that disgusting mess, I ended up transfering a pump top from another bottle (Ms. Myers lemon soap) and that seems to work better. Not to be too disgusting, but this oil gives my dog REALLY soft #2 if I put too much oil in his food, so I religiously stick to giving him the recommended dose. He had a beautiful coat already but I am hoping this will help his joints as he gets older and help prevent a re-occurence of the secondary skin infection he had earlier this year (i.e., extremely dry, flaky skin). The vet recommended this specific product when I asked if there were any oils I should give him. I like it but I just don't particularly like the bottle.

I use this on a regular basis for my older (14 year old) Yellow Lab. She became much more mobile in the weeks after I started giving this to her.

Like many, I started using this product after my Vet recommended it. He sold it at a big price mark-up compared to what Amazon makes it available for. I began using it for my dogs about six months ago and their coats have improved. Itching suffered by one dog has also improved. But, I wanted this product more to enhance their health than anything else. So, in looking at the packaging I noticed that they no longer specify the source of this oil being Salmon anymore. In addition, there is NO mention of how this oil is purified for canine consumption. Mercury consumption is a huge issue with most fish products and mercury resides in the fatty oils of the fish. Google "fish mercury poisoning" to see what I mean. Too much mercury, which is much easier to ingest than many people realize, is much easier for a small dog. The neurological problems and symptoms of mercury poisoning concern me immensely. My smallest dog has been behaving differently since using this product. His coordination isn't the same and his energy levels have fallen noticeably. Do I attribute that to this product? The only way of knowing is to switch to another product, which is what I'm doing.

To assure the purity of a fish oil product for my dogs, I'm switching to a product purified for human consumption. A 16-ounce bottle of "Nature's Answer Omega-3" (sold here on Amazon) actually costs less than the same-sized bottle of the Nutramax Welactin product, and the Nature's Answer product tells you that it has been "molecularly distilled" for human consumption. I'm trying this switch for a few months and will note whatever differences in behavior and energy that I see.

My vet recommended this to help with the skin and coat of my American Eskimo. While the product appears to help a little, it does not appear to have the miraculous results others have experienced in their reviews. My dog's coat is a bit shinier and softer but she is getting hot spots just like she always has every Summer.

The main reason for this poor review is the bait and switch advertising about the bottle it comes in. The advertised bottle and the actual bottle will make a world of difference in your experience of using and storing this product.

When the vet sold me this it was in a bottle about half the size of this one and had a flip top and a spoon to measure the dose (1/2 teaspoon). The spoon got filthy and was hard to clean without scrubbing after every use. It also drips down the side with every use. You need to wipe it and rinse the bottle off after every use or it turns slimy and yellow. Itt still got yellow and disgusting all over the outside of the bottle regardless of my precautions. It also left thick stains on my countertop that required major scrubbing to remove. Also, whether you notice it or not, every time you close the lid, a few tiny drops squirt out.

I ordered this one on Amazon because it came in a nice pump bottle! (look at the picture they advertise and then see what I got in the picture I uploaded). No spoon needed- pre measured with each pump! Except, unforunately, that is not the bottle that will arrive in the box. What you get is just a larger flip top bottle with the plastic spoon just like the one I got from my vet. Despite great pains to keep it clean, it still leaks and is already all over the top of the bottle. For the limited value it offers my dog, I feel like I need to keep buying it, but I will look for a source who will provide the correct packaging. (SEE PICTURES)

I bought this for my younger dog who has severely dry skin. The improvement has been slow but steady. The older dog got jealous because it tastes so good so I give her some too. Her coat has gotten very soft whereas it had been rather coarse in the cold weather. I am very pleased and am about to order more.
