About the Author
Author, educator and biochemist, Lyle MacWilliam serves as a scientific consultant and public advocate for the natural healthcare industry. His early scientific training led him to the investigation of oxidative stress and the biological properties of antioxidants. His research focused on radiation-induced free radical damage and dietary supplementation with Vitamin E. An accomplished martial artist, Mr. MacWilliam is passionate about personal fitness and health. As an author, Mr. MacWilliam's popular NutriSearch Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements and Comparative Guide to Children's Nutritionals provide consumers with reliable tools with which to sort through the maze of nutritional supplements on the market today. Internationally, he is a sought-after speaker on the importance of optimal nutrition and lifestyle. Mr. MacWilliam's research hits hard at today's lifestyle and dietary patterns and their role in the development of degenerative disease. He is a contributory writer for Life Extension Foundation, a non-profit agency dedicated to the scientific exploration of preventive health and longevity. He has also served as a consultant with Health Canada, Environment Canada, Human Resources Development Canada, and the British Columbia Science Council; he is currently engaged as a scientific consultant for several nutritional manufacturers in the United States and Canada. Mr. MacWilliam is also a member of the Society of Industry Leaders, an international organization dedicated to bringing together authorities from all fields in a global network connecting industry veterans and academia professionals with institutional investors. A former Canadian legislator, Mr. MacWilliam served at the behest of Canada's Minister of Health to help develop the framework which led to the current Natural Health Product Directorate and regulations, which allows consumers far more choice in their health care products.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good information - Bad standard, September 17, 2007
By LPS (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This is not a bad book. It has a whole lot of very good information. I just don't think that the standard which they use to evaluate the vitamins is objective. They are relying on the opinions of 12 physicians rather than the entire body of scientific evidence. Many times there is no concensus between these doctors and the deviation between their recommendations makes one wonder... So to rely on the median value derived solely from 12 doctors' opinions -some of which are in the vitamin business themselves- is biased to say the least.

As someone who has played with statistical data enough I can see how this "blended standard" makes some supplements look better than others....

I enjoyed reading the book and learned a few new things which I consider valuable. But as far as picking the "optimal" vitamins for me, the answer was definitely not found here ... If anything the book opened my eyes even more ... So be careful, and do lots of research ... LOTS LOTS more...

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprised to find that this book is very interesting to read, May 16, 2007
By Nancy Buschner (Las Vegas, NV) - See all my reviews

I really love this book. It is not simply a list with ratings, but a compilation of scientific information regarding supplements and how they effect our health. The NutriSearch team also discribes in detail the evaluation process they used and what the sources are for the standards they measured against. In addition, there are references to the Nutrisearch website which provides even further scientific information.

I also find it entertaining that some people would consider this book biased after evaluating the science? Could NutriSearch be so reckless as to make unsubstantiated claims that could only bring them huge lawsuits from major companies that have low rated products (like Centrum and One-a-Day)?

For some of the previous sour grapes who don't like where their products rate, why not follow the science and select a product that at least has a five star rating.

And take the time to actually read this informative book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nutritional Supplements book, January 29, 2008
By T. Miller "snomom" (McCall, ID USA) - See all my reviews

My daughter had the earlier addition of this book and I was impressed with the information provided. I think the author tries to give a factual summary of each product in an unbiased and fair manner. It gives the consumer an overview of each product so you know the quality of the product you will be choosing to use. I feel that it allows me to make a much more informed decision on my supplements.
