This is a side-by-side comparison of ten leading omega-3 fish oil supplements: OmegaVia Pharma-Grade Fish Oil, Nutrigold Triple Strength Fish Oil Omega-3 Gold, Garden of Life Minami Nutrition Platinum Omega 3 Plus D3 Formula, Norwegian Gold Ultimate Fish Oils Super Critical Omega, Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, Omapure Pharmaceutical Grade Omega-3 Fish Oil, Now Ultra Omega-3, Barlean's Ideal 3 Omega, Innovix Triple Strength Omega-3, and Innovix Labs Pharma-Grade Omega-3.

There are three major components of omega-3 in these products: EPA (which is good for your heart, circulatory system, lowering triglycerides, depression and mood orientation, and is a powerful anti-inflammatory for soothing joint pains), DHA (which is good for your mental acuity, or if you are pregnant, nursing an infant, or for children), and "other." Other omega-3s, like DPA and SDA, are types of fatty acids which are easily converted to EPA in the body. In most fish oils, the amount of these other fatty acids is low, but in highly concentrated oils, it can be a significant amount. The important components are EPA and DHA.

BREAKDOWN: Here is a breakdown of these supplements.

When buying an Omega-3 supplement you want to check how much EPA and DHA is actually provided per serving (EPA and DHA are the beneficial fatty acids you are looking for in Omega-3's). Having the background of someone working in the medical field I recommended Nutrigold to my father who happens to be a heart patient. The amount of Omega-3's(specifically EPA & DHA) provided per capsule for Nutrigold are slighter higher than his prescription strength Lovaza. Nutrigold: 750mg EPA + 250mg DHA vs Lovaza: 475mg EPA + 365mg DHA. As an added bonus they cost much less than the prescription. Don't fall for the gimmicks of the big drug companies who pay the FDA millions to get approval and pass the cost onto the consumer. I would highly recommended this product to anyone looking for a great source of essential Omega-3's. I will follow up this review at a later time with more info with regards to taste and compliance.

UPDATE(06/04/2012):

I recently visited the IFOS(International Fish Oil Standard) website(Google it). They are an independent lab in Ontario, Canada that tests fish for consistency and heavy metal content. I was unable to find any Nutrigold info on their site. So I emailed Nutrigold support a few days ago to request a copy of the IFOS Certificate from their quality control department(IFOS website suggested this). I received an email this morning with the certificate attached and they even offered to send me an updated certificate when their new batch gets analyzed. The lab results are ecactly in line with what the product claims with complete accuracy in the amount of essential Omega-3s provided. This product is 90% of the stuff your looking for (EPA + DHA) and that is a really good number. I found this info to be very reassuring of my decision to purchase this product. Here is Nutrigold's support email for anyone that may be curious: support(at)nutrigold.com

Could be an unlucky batch - my first bottle was perfect and I loved it but this second one must have had a few pills pop because every single capsule smelled SO bad.

Wary about buying another and might try another brand depending on how the next bottle goes.

I have noticed an increase in my arthritic symptoms and also some eye dryness. My optometrist asked me to poke a hole in the capsule and see if it had a fishy smell. It did. She said that is an indication it is a lower quality omega 3 supplement and also it is rancid.

My primary care doctor said that she only recommends Metagenics brand. My optometrist recommends Nordic Naturals.

People vary and so do their professionals of course. I share this with the hope that it is helpful to someone.

I've taken fish oil supplements for over 23 years because of Kidney disease, "IGA Nephropathy". Incidentally, I started taking Nutrigold triple strength about 3 years ago. I had been seeing a Nephrologist (kidney doctor) regulary over those years to evaluate the progress of the disease. My first lab tests after starting Nutrigold showed drastic improvments. Last year my Nephrologist reclassified me from stage two kidney disease back to stage one kidney disease and said I may never see the later stages of kidney disease. Could it be a coincidence, I don't reallly think so. I also prayed ferventy to Jesus Christ.

I have been taking Fish Oil for a long time. I usually splurge on the mor expensive brands because I cannot stand the fishy aftertaste. I thought I'd give this a try to save money, but I had that same fishy aftertaste (last about an hour). I couldn't even finish the bottle. I am going back to Nordic Naturals (Carlson's is a good brand too). I've tried many and those two brands are the only ones without the aftertaste.
