Book Description

August 3, 2007 0495014834 978-0495014836 1
Insightful, well organized, and clearly written, Nutrition for Sport and Exercise integrates nutrition and exercise physiology principles, emphasizing scientific reasoning and examining research studies to illuminate the evidence for current nutritional recommendations. Dunford and Doyle carefully illustrate the links between training, the increased demand for nutrients as a result of training, the translation of nutrient goals to the intake of an appropriate amount and type of foods, beverages and/or supplements, and, the ultimate goal, excellent performance. The book focuses on critical thinking as it provides you with the tools you need to make good decisions regarding your own training, nutrition, and performance, to prepare you as practicing professionals to guide the decisions of others. The book includes numerous examples and practical applications.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Objectives are clearly defined and organized in a logical as well as practical format that should be easy for students to grasp. . . . Sidebars and text boxes are useful and easily lend themselves to discussion beyond factual material, moving towards application of major concepts."

"I think these first three chapters are better written, better organized, and set a better stage for the rest of the information presented in the book, when compared to our current text. . . . Great concepts and ideas, some great new concepts not presented in other texts, well suited for undergraduate students."

"All the chapters [I reviewed] were great. The primary strength is that it melds the current research and recommendations with practical considerations for feeding athletes. The depth and breadth seem to be appropriate and the instructor should be able to elaborate if necessary. I also liked the frankness in situations of athletes' nutritional practices."

"Excellent objectives-particularly the application to non-athletes exercising for health and/or weight loss. The emphasis on science and critical thinking is very important; as the authors state, practitioners in this field need to be able to sift through a lot of new claims and fads. To do this, they will need a solid understanding of the underlying science and practice evaluating scientific claims. . . . This textbook is an excellent guide to the real world of athletes and people who strive for healthy living and the environment that compels their dietary practices, with emphasis on strategies for improvement and consequences of sub-optimal nutritional practices."

The author of this textbook does a good job of explaining things clearly and making the material interesting. Texts aren't always the most engaging reading material, but Dunford and Doyle present topics in a way that isn't as dull as some are.

The book is exactly what I needed for class, and it's in perfect shape--not a mark on it. It came right on time as promised. Thank you.
