4.0 out of 5 stars A slim volume full of practical guidance, March 12, 2010

This review is from: Nutrition A Word of Wisdom (Paperback)
Nutrition books, even LDS nutrition books, aren't anything new, but that still does not alter the value of this book. Dr. Johnson examines each portion of the Word of Wisdom, one per chapter, to explain the meaning of the instruction and how it applies to life and health. Much of this is probably already known to those who study nutrition, so what makes this special is the spiritual application and the fact that the revelation was given long before modern health studies.

I also see it as a wake-up call to members of the church and everyone else everywhere. There is a solid bunch of Mormons who do adopt strict vegetarian or vegan lifestyles (though Dr. Johnson never promotes this as necessary) because of the Word of Wisdom, and that fact is that there is plenty of reason to support this choice. Still, plenty of Mormons are sure to notice a few portions of the word and ignore the rest of it.

Another nice aspect: This is not a Mormon diet book, unless one considers a diet change to be literally changing one's diet. This is a nutrition book of what we should and should not put into our bodies.

I was quite impressed with this. It's a slender little book that makes for a quick read or a handy reference, and Dr. Johnson's personal narrative makes it all the more enjoyable and accessible.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Essential Read, January 26, 2012
This review is from: Nutrition A Word of Wisdom (Paperback)
Nutrition A Word of Wisdom

I highly recommend reading this book, and then putting it where it can be easily referenced on a regular basis. It is well written in a comfortable style that informs, and also inspires readers to take better care when choosing what to eat each day. It follows guidance given by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in what is known as the Word of Wisdom. There is nothing pushy about the book. It tells it as it is and then leaves individuals to decide which direction is best for them. Dr. Johnson says, ". . . the Word of Wisdom is a revelation from God, the observance of which will prevent unnecessary suffering and death, and enhance the health of all who endeavor to live it to its fullest."

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, easy read, January 19, 2012

This review is from: Nutrition A Word of Wisdom (Paperback)
This book reads like it was a doctoral thesis. The author broke down each segment of the W.O.W. and discussed it using scientific fact, reasoning and even a bit of religion thrown in. A lot of the information was simple but it was well put together. The author switched between informative and persuasive frequently and ended by proclaiming that he hopes everyone will make at least a small change based on what they learned.

I'm sold, although not just from his writing. It is a good addition to my growing library of information. Maybe I'll lend it to family and friends in my pursuit to explain my newfound lifestyle...
