About the Author

Joan Salge Blake, MS, RD, LDN

Boston University

 

Joan Salge Blake is a Clinical Associate Professor and the Dietetics Internship Director at Boston University’s College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (Sargent College). She received her MS from Boston University and teaches both graduate and undergraduate nutrition courses. She has also been a guest lecturer at the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine.

 

Joan is a member of the American Dietetic Association and the Massachusetts Dietetic Association (MDA) and has been a presenter and Presiding Officer at both the ADA Annual Meeting and MDA Annual Convention. She has been a recipient of the Outstanding Dietitian (2009), Outstanding Dietetic Educator (2007) and Young Dietitian of the Year awards.  She also received the Whitney Powers Excellence in Teaching Award from Boston University. Joan is an ADA National Media Spokesperson and conducts over 100 media interviews annually. Her nutrition segments can be seen regularly on Fox25 TV, Boston.

Joan Salge Blake is Clinical Associate Professor at Boston University and an author of Nutrition & You: Core Concepts to Good Health, 2010, Nutrition: From Science to You (2010), Nutrition & You (2008), and Eat Right The E.A.S.Y. Way (1991). She is currently working on another book to be published early next year. Her hope is that these books change the lives of those who read them.

Joan is member of the American Dietetic Association (ADA) and the Massachusetts Dietetic Association (MDA). She was previously named MDA's "Young Dietitian of the Year" and is a MDA board member. She was awarded the 2001 Whitney Powers Excellence in Teaching Award from BU, a 2007 Outstanding Dietetic Educator (ADA), and the 2009 Outstanding Dietitian (MDA).

She is currently an ADA Media Spokesperson and has appeared on CBS-The Early Show, CNN, Pure Oxygen, NBC News (Boston), CBS News (New York), Fox25 TV (Boston), Chronicle, NPR and other television and radio talk shows. Her nutrition segments appear regularly on Fox25 TV Boston. She has been quoted in or written for People, Forbes, Newsweek, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, Health, Redbook, the LA Times, the Chicago Tribune, The Business Traveler, Family Circle, US World News, Parade, Newsday, Readers Digest, the Boston Phoenix, The Patriot Ledger, Food Network.com, AOL.com, WebMD, Cooking Light, Details, Fitness, Shape, Self, Weight Watchers, Parents, Essence, Msnbc, Yahoo.com and All You magazines.

Last year the USDA updated the food groups again. If you purchase the book new you will get an insert with the updated "myplate" info. The used book does not contain the updated information so I'm having to go online to get the information I need for class. It is worth the savings to buy it used and go online for the myplate stuff I need for class.

This book is a wonderful and easy supplement to the nutrition course I am currently taking. It makes what may seem potentially complicated terms very easy to understand, and has wonderful practice assignments to supplement the reading.

I bought this book for a course and it is very well written. This is a massive amount of information but the book walks through each section nicely. There are numerous visuals to go with each group of information. I think some of the anatomy ones could be better, bigger and clearer but for the most part these are very well done.

I purchased what was supposed to be a new book. A new textbook would still have the access code covered in a silver foil showing that the access code has not been redeemed. The access code has been redeemed on this book causing me to miss out on much needed information that I would be able to access via the Pearson textbook website. I will have to purchase a new code which will cost me more money than what I would have spent purchasing the book through the school bookstore. Do not advertise a book as being new when in fact it is clearly a used book!
