About the Author

Joan Salge Blake, MS, RD, LDN is a Clinical Associate Professor and Dietetics Internship Director at

Boston University’s Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. She teaches both

graduate and undergraduate nutrition courses. She received her MS from Boston University. Joan is

currently taking classes toward her PhD in educational technology.


Joan is a member of the American Dietetic Association and the Massachusetts Dietetic Association

(MDA). She has been a presenter and Presiding Officer at both the ADA Annual Meeting and the

MDA Annual Convention and is a guest lecturer at the Boston University Goldman School of Dental

Medicine. She was previously named MDA’s “Young Dietitian of the Year” and is the past Director

of Education and Nominating Committee Chairperson for the MDA. She currently serves on the

MDA board. Joan has received the Whitney Powers Excellence in Teaching award from Boston

University and the Annie Galbraith Outstanding Dietitian award from the Massachusetts Dietetic



In addition to teaching and writing, Joan has a private practice specializing in weight management

and lifestyle changes. Joan is often asked to translate complex nutritional issues in popular terms. As

an ADA National Spokesperson she conducts over 100 media interviews annually, and is a nutrition

contributor of articles to a variety of magazines.

Last year the USDA updated the food groups again. If you purchase the book new you will get an insert with the updated "myplate" info. The used book does not contain the updated information so I'm having to go online to get the information I need for class. It is worth the savings to buy it used and go online for the myplate stuff I need for class.

I bought this book for a course and it is very well written. This is a massive amount of information but the book walks through each section nicely. There are numerous visuals to go with each group of information. I think some of the anatomy ones could be better, bigger and clearer but for the most part these are very well done.

I typically try to be cordial on reviews. When I see phrases in all caps, I imagine some delirious person who more than likely did not read the instructions. Well, I must admit, I read the directions and took a calculated risk. It did not work in my favor, however. I have purchased books on Amazon for 5 semesters now. I have yet to have any issue with it, until this book. I will say that once again, Amazon gets 5 stars for their customer service and attempting to help me, but this product is not worth the purchase.

The single most important thing in text books today: the online access code. Without this, many text books are no better than weights in your already strained backpack. I purchased this because so many people said it worked for them while only a couple it did not. I, again, took a chance hoping this would work out for me. However, the code did not work. Amazon sent me another book/code, but honestly, I simply sent it back because it was in the same exact packaging. The ISBN on the shrink wrap of the book is different than the ISBN of the book itself. Utilizing the campus bookstore online, I double checked that, in fact, I ordered the correct ISBN, but for what ever reason, (neither Pearson or Amazon could explain) the access code did not work. I presume it has something to do with the ISBN's being different. Why it would work for some and not others is a mystery.

I ended up spending another $42 for the online access and $16 for the MyDietAnalysis access. If I say anything in caps, it is this: RENT OR BUY THIS BOOK USED. Then pay for whatever online access your professor requires. I fortunately had money in the bank to just say screw it and make the purchase, but if you're a starving college student, do not buy it new.

Yes, I couldn't believe the price of the book when I first see it, I had to double check it because I couldn't believe my eyes. I just received my book today; rapid service. This book is in excellent condition. There are no visible marks or rips on the book. It practically looked like I just walked in the bookstore and purchased it. This book was supposed to come with an online code but the code was expired. When we tried to get a valid code, the seller said they had another book for twice the price we could buy. This seller is shady and we won't be using them again. No customer service, false advertising and do not back their items. I will be spreading the word about them to all my fellow students. Shady seller and terrible customer service.

Joan Salge Blake is Clinical Associate Professor at Boston University and an author of Nutrition & You: Core Concepts to Good Health, 2010, Nutrition: From Science to You (2010), Nutrition & You (2008), and Eat Right The E.A.S.Y. Way (1991). She is currently working on another book to be published early next year. Her hope is that these books change the lives of those who read them.

Joan is member of the American Dietetic Association (ADA) and the Massachusetts Dietetic Association (MDA). She was previously named MDA's "Young Dietitian of the Year" and is a MDA board member. She was awarded the 2001 Whitney Powers Excellence in Teaching Award from BU, a 2007 Outstanding Dietetic Educator (ADA), and the 2009 Outstanding Dietitian (MDA).
