Her blog includes an unique combination of innovative recipes using alternative ingredients (and bacon) to less healthy options and easy to understand explanations of why these options are better for our health. She includes with each recipe a snip-it of information about different ailments and problems with our health that can be healed with proper nutrition. Don't waste your money on this. Buy the Sweets book and Savory book and you'll be good to go. Many recipes are repeated here, but the book lacks sufficient pictures and is printed on standard paper unlike the other full color books. Also, the extra-low rating is given due to a totally illogical table of contents. The author did not take the time to sort recipes by category (cookies, savory, etc., etc.) - everything is listed in alphabetical order. That's an index - not a table of contents. It's nearly impossible to find a specific type of recipe and even harder to locate a recipe I made before in the book.

I started off purchasing Maria's nutritional book "Secrets to a Healthy Metabolism". I'm always purchaing nutritional books because I like to educate myself and this book was the best book (by far) I've read in a very long time!
Maria's recipes have opened up a whole new world for me .....I can't remember the last time I could have a bagel for breakfast and had no guilt associated with it!! A healthy bagel? I didn't think there was such a thing. In addition, her bagels have less effects on sugar levels in the body than an apple! This is due to the ingredients she uses. It's very liberating!
I've also made her mannaise to put in a ranch dressing I make and it was really delicious!
I have made her cheddar crackers for my husband - he usually eats crackers from a box. We sampled them fresh out of the oven! Can you imagine having crackers that are warm and cheesy!! - abosolutely delicious.
We're going to make her pizza crust next week and am looking forward to that. I've also plan to make her cinamon roles (with frosting 3 carbs); and her garlic break (1 carb per slice).
It's not just the fact that these are low carb that makes them special however. Maria's cook books work in conjunction with her nutritional beliefs - which considers the effects of carbs on our blood sugars. Certain carbs in paticular cause higher spikes in blood sugar which in turn causes our bodies to secret insullin. "Insulin clears sugar and fat from the blood to be stored in the tissues for future use. This causes weight gain" (from Maria's book "Secrets to a Healthy Metabolism").

Not only are these recipes tasty, but they're good for you. I found Maria Emmerich through my sister, who found Maria through her husband, who heard Maria speak at an employee health seminar at Target Corp. For almost a year I casually invested time and money in buying her books, turning over my pantry and "Healthifing" my family's dinners. I finally decided to try our her consulting services for a month and have learned so much more about my health, our bodies, nutrition, brain function, etc. The changes and the "Ah ha" moments have been worth their weight in gold! Any of Maria's books will help you get started. I like her cookbooks. They come bound, but I took them to a printer friend of mine who took off the binding and put in a spiral binding for me. The BEST for use in the kitchen! And, the most valuable part of Maria's cookbooks, in my opinion, is the first few pages that include the her nutritional comparison charts. I was so overwhelmed with what I was hearing was good for me, bad for me, etc. Her charts spells it out in a visual format that helped me learn, and I know I can also go back to them as a reference point! This is my third book by Maria. Her recipes are made with ingredients you have on hand, are easy to make and very tasty! We have started cooking again....and are working our way through the book. I would highly recommend purchasing this recipe book...especially for those people who are trying to lose weight without sacrificing taste and variety.
What a great cookbook! Not only is it loaded with great, nutritious recipes it's also loaded with great information! I love that it's a kindle edition as well so I can have recipes with me while I'm on the go or if I make a quick stop at the store I get see what ingredients I need right from my phone. There are so many recipes that I can't wait to try. I've been looking through it all morning trying to decide what to make first! Thank you, Maria, for another great book to help keep me and family eating amazing food and living our healthy lifestyle! We couldn't have done it without you!
I highly recommend this cookbook! I make 99% of our meals from this book. It never leaves my counter because I'm either selecting the next recipe or using it to cook. As I try each recipe, I add comments directly to the page to remember next time...personal preferences, techniques, etc. I like the easy to read substitution chart in the beginning of the book. This makes for a quick reference when making smart low carb selections. I especially appreciate the kids section. It makes providing healthy alternatives for my 7 year old that much easier! Keep up the great work Maria!
