Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Hitler and his general staff were convinced that if the Allies on the Continent were struck a shattering blow, their unity would collapse. In mid-December 1944, they planned and executed a sudden but unsuccessful counterattack westward through the Forest of Ardennes that on combat maps produced a change in the battle line forever known as the Bulge. Following the format and scope of their earlier works The Way It Was (LJ 8/91) and D-Day Normandy (LJ 4/1/94), the authors have reconstructed the sense of those uncertain days in the frozen Belgian woods. Hundreds of photos taken from American and German sources capture the world of combat from the perspective of foot soldiers and tank crewmen in all its powerful, gritty, and often gruesome reality. A valuable addition to any collection on this subject.

From Booklist

Although hardly the first in a respectable procession of materials commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, this book is likely to become one of the more durable members of the march. The authors all have respectable research and writing credentials in military history, beginning with assisting in the magisterial works of the late Gordon V. Prange. They have collaborated on a clear, concise, balanced text that is inevitably somewhat cursory but does put the battle in its larger context, and have done very well in presenting a generous selection of photographs and maps. The selection of photos, in particular, avoids most of the old chestnuts of the battle and provides one of the best unofficial visual coverages of it ever seen. 4.0 out of 5 stars Photographic History of the Battle, October 27, 2001
By A Customer
This is a coffee table sized collection of photographs of the persons and events of the Battle of the Bulge. Although it does contain a text with information about commanders, weapons, and the overall course of the battle, the book is mainly interested in describing what is happening in its numerous photos. Of particular interest are the photos made by the Germans. The German photographers paid close attention to the large numbers of stunned American POWs, wrecked and abandoned American vehicles, and the corpses of fallen GIs. It's a different perspective from the usual pictures of advancing and victorious Americans. Also of note is that this book finally lays to rest one of the biggest inaccuracies of the photographic record of the war- proving that the famous picture of cigar chewing SS trooper next to the Malmedy sign is NOT infamous SS Lt. Col. Jochen Peiper.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for the photos and captions, July 30, 2005
By
Not the first book I would open on the Battle of the Bulge, as it is not comprehensive and a bit unbalanced. It's really a picture book, and in that respect, is worthwhile. The captions are more descriptive (and apparently accurate) than in many books. For example, the photos in a series taken by German battlefield photographers are shown to have been largely staged immediately after combat to re-enact the fighting- interesting. These photos show up in other books without that context mentioned. Those interested in the Malmedy trial will find the photos in that section noteworthy. Worth a look but not a classic for the collection unless you're really focused on the Battle of the Bulge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick History, October 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this book as part of a pile of research material for a TV script I was writing. Unlike the other material I bought, it's not an exhaustive volume on the subject by any means. That said, for someone with a casual interest in the subject it is a relatively brief examination of the conflict with many, many pictures. It is really quite good for conveying essential information and the pictures put it all in perspective.
