I first heard this man play about 35 years ago and I've felt ever since that he is in a class by himself. Like Tatum, his fingers seem to fly effortlessly up and down the keys, and I have NEVER heard him stumble. There seems to be no barrier between his endless ideas and flawless execution. There doesen't seem to be anything that he cannot play...and play with brilliance, imagination, fire, grace and humor. And he must be pushing 80 by now! His junior sidemen here are is equal in many ways, and thier joyfull interplay is infectious. This is simply beautiful music, without pretension, at once traditional and spontanious, not needing any promotion or hype, uncorruptable in its purity. These are artists and musicians in the truest sense of the words. So, enough words. Listen and be uplifted. Bless you all.

what certain really responsible and intelligent people do is create art--- william blake said its our responsiblity to be poet/artists-- to be like our creator---christ being the greatest artist who ever lived --this cd and the music on it reminded me of all this-- --this guy this algerian/french guy-- is so hip & his music twists you in new directions--which is saying a lot in these days of so many mining the genius of others rather than their own---its probably hard to resist not playing past masters--but to deconstruct them and re swing them like this is a revelation -a new architecture of sound re-forms around you and takes you where u never went before-- this is the reason for art and its greatest accomplishment-- to re create the world--all great art is always brand new in this regard--and performs this function-- it destroys what existed b4 and replaces it with something else-- like what picasso always did & what bob dylan always does---what miles did-- what all artists do- they destroy the world and recreate it-- while others have to make wars and destroy others lives-- these saviours among us do the opposite & perform magic -transformation -rebirth & miracles ---recorded just up the block from ground zero right after the handy work of lesser souls who know only how to destroy and not recreate---we have our miracle our healing in the church of the village vanguard- at the hands of three magicians-- ive heard bill stewart many times at smalls- two blocks closer to ground zero and another church (now sadly gone)--- but i heard bill play there many times and have always been mesmerized by his playing- his attack his varied way of playing -always exciting now soft then hard fast then slow quirky & off beat-- compelling & poetic- the perfect drummer for this mission----and mission accomplished -new worlds for old -- no lives lost---forget the so called news that is nothing new and take a ride to a really new universe---where the world is full of possibility & hope springs eternal---and hear it on this amazing cd --thank you captain solal- and keep on keepin on !!
