3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work with ipod video
I like the idea, but the jack is in the wrong place for my ipod video. Had to return it. Wish that the info on this was more complete.

I've had this product for about 2 1/2 months, and I am glad I bought it. I wanted something that would allow me to pause, change tracks, or change the volume on my iPod while driving my car (I've found that looking at the iPod while driving - even just glancing at it repeatedly - is extremely dangerous), and the iTop fits the bill. The fact that the buttons give tactile information (it has concave, convex, and "nippled" buttons) makes this especially easy.

Another benefit (while walking) is that you don't have to take the iPod out of your pocket to change any settings, and thus avoid displaying it to everyone around you ("Hey, I have an iPod! Come hit me on the head and steal it!"). To me, this makes the iTop superior to the Apple Remote, which has that distinctive white cord and "Apple-cool" look to it.

While in the car, you just have to make sure to pause the iPod before you turn off the stereo or the car and unplug the cord from the minijack. I once forgot to do that, and the iPod kept playing for the next few hours. When I got back into the car and wanted to listen to my iPod (for the hour-long drive home), it was dead. : ( So beware - taking the cord out of the minijack on the iTop does not pause the iPod (like I would think it should)!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great addition to your iPod, September 26, 2005
This review is from: Nyko iTop Button Relocator for iPod (Electronics)
I bought the itop at my local apple store and paid more than what Amazon charges making this a good deal.

It works great when you want to put your pod in a pocket and don't want to pull it out all the time. There are 5 buttons on top - 2 for vol up/down, 2 for fast forward/skip and backwards/skip, and one for on/off/hold.

I use an Agent-18 clickshield case on my 60GB photo, put this on the top and slip it in my pocket. Once you've used it for a while you won't have to pull the pod out to control it. The itop buttons have a different feel (some are raised, some are indented on top, etc.) so you can do it all by touch.

Looks good, works good, good price. What more could you want?

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than I thought, October 30, 2006

I gave this product a try even after a review saying that the hold button doesn't works well.
It is true that the hold button is independent on both the iPod and the iTop. But it's a very good idea. I put the iPod on hold and the iTop still works (unless you put it on hold too). This way the buttons on the iPod won't be accidentally activated in your pocket but you still can pause, adjust volume and fast forward/backward from the iTop.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hold feature is terribly flawed, July 2, 2005

I was excited about picking this device up, but ran into a major problem in actually using it. The "hold" button on the device does NOT put a hold on the iPod itself, only on the device. And if you toggle on the hold button on the iPod, the device doesn't work.

So basically if you have your iPod in a pouch or on a belt case, and want to use the buttons to now have to look at the side or take it out of the case, you can - but only if there's no risk with that setup of having the iPod spin wheel or buttons (depending on gen 3 or gen 4) get pushed.

Great idea, bad implementation.

3.0 out of 5 stars this is a nice addition to ipod accessories..., September 24, 2008
This review is from: Nyko iTop Button Relocator for iPod (Electronics)
...but i missed the part where it said, "not compatible with ipod video".

i thought it wouldn't matter even if it would look weird because it would be off-center since i always use my ipod and risking of breaking the ipod clickwheel.

my problem was that there is this connector that is protruding next to the plug, and no matter what position i tried, the plug wouldn't go in the earphone hole.

so if you have a video ipod, i woulnd't recommend this, as the seller noted, which i totally missed... my fault!

I love this device. I walk my dog with my iPod on all the time and this little gizmo lets me adjust volume and skip forward-backward through songs with a button push. I'm a clumsy guy and for me to be repeatedly removing my iPod from the belt case is an invitation to droppage.

My only complaint is that my unit only lasted about 18 months before it started to short out, but at these prices I bought two as replacements, one for now, one for later.

Highly recommended.

Of all of the attachments for the iPod, this button relocator has got to rank among the best and most useful. Not having to open your ipod case or take the ipod out of your pocket, is #1 in my book. No top functions of the iPod are lost. Buy it. It's great!

The product works as intended, so no problems there. I liked the idea of not having to take my iPod out of its case, but actually, you need to if you like to change your songs/books, frequently. For my use, I still have to pull my iPod out to change albums, playlists and books that I listen to, so because I jump around so much, I often remove it from the case. That negates the reason why I bought this item. Since is sticks out of the case, I have knocked it out of jack when in the gym...seldom, but I find it a great idea, but of little use for me, so it is collecting dust.
