Book Description

February 1, 1979
  • Identify nymphs, tie imitations, and fish them successfully
  • Casting, finding lies, detecting the strike, fishing depth, tackle, proper presentation
  • Insights into the retrieve, nymphing the film, and finding fish in still water

Basic nymph fishing approach and presentation teams with trout physiology--what the trout sees and hears. A pictorial key to identifying nymphs is based on reliable, nonscientific characteristics that the beginner can use on stream. Presenting the fly correctly and detecting the strike are particularly elusive skills, and even the veteran fly fisher will find something useful.

    Amazon.com Review

While most of us, if we had our druthers, would cast dry flies to rising fish all day long, the fact remains that a trout takes 90 percent of its prey below the surface. It doesn't require a marine biologist to figure out that on certain days--when the hatch is off--you need nymphs if you want to feel that telltale tug at the end of your line. To this end, Gary Borger provides a comprehensive guide to identifying, tying, and fishing artificial nymph patterns. Chapters on line control (casting and mending), trout biology, reading the water, and fly selection are presented in clear language along with ample drawings and diagrams. As the author writes in his preface, "Fly fishing, and nymphing in particular, is more than just a method of catching trout.... it is an open-ended learning experience with lessons in ecology, limnology, botany, ichthyology, natural history, and much more."

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the classics., November 7, 2001

I signed this book out of the library in my adolescence and sucked it up like a brown does a golden stone. There are a lot of similar books out there -- and some videos on tying and fishing nymphs as well -- that are useful. But because this book was a formative influence on me and I can not imagine having been without it, I have to give it all five stars. Indispensable.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Truth Lies Just Below The Surface & In This Book, May 24, 2010

This book is a godsend. I am a dry-fly fisher, not because it is my code, but rather because it is the easiest way to fish (but not the easiest way to catch fish). I had little skill in nymphing, and that is why I bought this book. Everyone says using nymphs are the best way to catch fish, but you need skill to use them, so I needed help. Let me just say that this book provided more help than I could have wished for, and has surpassed my wildest expectations. It is filled with great advice and very clear in instructing one how to use that advice. I would suggest this book to anyone that needs some help getting below the surface film to catch more trout.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tactical overview of nymphing techniques, December 15, 1999

This review is from: Nymphing (Hardcover)
A very easy to read discussion of tactics and tips. Very enjoyable read as well. If only I could get my friends Bill and Dave to read it, they might catch fish.
