This app is one of the best references I've ever seen for tying knots. There is a quick animation for each type of knot, and you can rotate the image 360 degrees so you can get a good look at it. The app also describes the uses for each knot and its advantages and disadvantages. It covers just about every knot you could ever need to tie, though disappointingly, it leaves out necktie knots entirely.
It works great on my Motorola Xoom tablet (though only in portrait mode) and my HTC Evo LTE.
EDIT: When I originally wrote this review, the app was loaded with spyware such as OpenFeint and Flurry and a ton of permissions. Since then, the developer has listened to the reviews and removed all that junk. The new version of this app has no permissions and no spyware!

Very Useful Knot Guide app (but has excessive permissions and spyware)

A very useful app for remembering not only how to tie various knots, but also for deciding which knot is appropriate for particular situations. There are various web sites that have animated knot animations (netknots and grog's animatedknots for two that I've frequented), but the app makes a concise reference in my pocket. I found the interface in this app pretty easy to use and quick to find a particular knot.
There was a glitch or two running on my Galaxy Nexus: sometimes it wrote text over itself, and it had some initial slowness (why would it on a dual core!?). I only take off half a star for those problems -- and I rounded that back up to 5 stars because the app worked so well otherwise.
However, the permissions and spyware in this app reduce the rating to 2.
This app is full of other junk that does not belong in a paid app. The permissions were an initial hint: Why does an app that just displays information built into it need full internet access? Why does it need read access to the phone state? Those permissions sound like they are needed by spyware.
And in fact, Add-on Detector shows 3 advertising modules and 3 analytic modules - why does this app need to collect information on what I am doing and report it to numerous third parties? I might understand that in the free ad-supported version, but not in a paid version.
Other similar knot tying apps have ad-supported versions with similar adware and permissions, but most of those have paid versions that lack that stuff and require NO special permissions. In particular, Animated Knots by Grog (who runs the animatedknots web page I mentioned earlier) is very useful (although pricey).
To be fair: the developer of this app says he is not directly using these permissions nor any of these included modules. They are being included by the CoronaSDK development framework (which he is using to build this app) and cannot be disabled. I can only take his word that he's not selling information about me on the side, and the app is not serving up ads. The real problem is CoronaSDK, and the only way to get that corrected is to have pressure put on it via the developers who pay for it.
Summary: useful app that is tainted by the inclusion of an SDK with bad properties.

UPDATE: The developer commented (see comments link on this post) with news that the privacy issues have been removed. In fact, there are no special permissions needed at all. Therefore, I have increased the star rating to its well-deserved 5-stars!
This is an awesome, and potentially life or property-saving app, perfect for the scout or anyone needing a good knot from time to time, and especially useful for folks such as Boatswain's Mates!
I'm impressed with this developer, who actually understood the concerns from the beginning and worked diligently to address them and to remove them. I hope that other devs learn from his example, and equally hope that fellow reviewers revisit their reviews; after all, the software has undergone a significant change - a change prompted directly by those reviews.

I went ahead and gave this app four stars because of its unique and helpful nature. As a cub scout leader, this app certainly belongs on my phone. However, it would have received five stars if it weren't for the privacy issues as others have discussed.
Because of the privacy issues, I normally would _not_ give an app with this many problems a higher score than three stars, and typically less. However, the reasons I made an exception for this app are:
* The developer has tried to clearly explain the issue and has promised to be more transparent. I'm hoping that he is looking into a different SDK that doesn't use its customers (app developers, in this case) to bundle was is essentially adware and spyware within each app created by the SDK. There are better alternatives than Corona.
* The practicality and usefulness of this app are genuinely helpful, and potentially life-saving.
* There is no IAP in this app. Always good for something above a 1-star these days.
* The problems with the privacy can be stopped with a firewall (device might have to be rooted) or a custom ROM (operating system). Fortunately, I have both, so I don't worry about the privacy problems with this app.
When the problems are resolved, I intend on changing my score to five full stars. I hope others follow suit, as well.
