Nyrius Songo

This is a handy little unit that gives you the opportunity to use that stereo unit you’ve neglected because you’ve been listening to your music on your portable device. You know that you do – and either through less-than optimal speakers or earbuds. And every time you see that sleek black electronic unit on your shelf/stand you sigh and wished that you actually still used it. This Nyrius Songo takes away that guilt by becoming a receiving unit from your mobile device and hooking into the stereo a few different ways: through the line-in jack, the game or input RCA jacks, or the TOS link if you have that feature. All three methods seem to deliver the same quality of sound, so really the connection choice is really once of location preference for the wiring.

And therein lies really my only negative about this unit and yes, I know it is nitpicky, but this is my review so get over it; because of the light-weight of the Nyrius Songo, the connection cables have too much influence about the staying in position. I think once you find your idea spot (so the you get a good resulting Bluetooth® connection) you need to anchor this with something like double-stick tape, a bracket or something to keep it from being pulled by the outbound connection cable.

I forgot to mention the process of pairing with the mobile device and selecting it. I forgot because it was so very easy. No pin numbers to enter, no downloading an application, no hassle. Just Bluetooth® setup, select and go. The mobile devices I tried all gave me the option to use the internal speakers (or headphones) or the Bluetooth® and I could easily switch back and forth between those outputs.

The Nyrius Songo HiFi bluetooth receiver is a small little device that can bring some new skills to your old receiver. I was easily able to coneect it to an old stereo system I had. Once I had it hooked up, about a 2 minute process, I was able to stream music from my iPhone, iPad, laptop, and Nexus 7 tablet to my old receiver. It sounded great.

The Nyrius receiver is able to remember pairings with more than one device so if you've got a couple devices paired to it, whichever one is the last one paired will be connected if it is in range, otherwise if that last paired device is unavailable and another previously paired device is on then the Nyrius will connect to that one instead. It's nice that I don't have to reconnect manually each time I want to use a different device.

The Nyrius receiver is a small little thing measuring roughly 2 3/4" x 3 1/8" x 3/4". On the back is an aux output, optical output and DC input. The power adapter is 120-240V, 50/60Hz and has a 6' power cord. Also included is a short Aux to RCA connector and a 6' Auxillary cable.

If your device is aptX capable, you will notice an improved sound compared to normal bluetooth connection.
Either way, this is a wonderful addition to a home stereo. It gives you the flexibility in getting streamed music from several devices to your stereo system or powered speaker.

I was provided a sample for review.

With the rapid evolution of portable music many older home stereos and media center became obsolete. First came the iPod/iPhone docs, but with Apple ditching the 30-pin connector many of them also became obsolete. Within the last 18 months (from when I write this) everything has transitioned to bluetooth and NFC devices. The Nyrius Songo allows you add NFC and bluetooth capability to an existing home stereo or ipod dock - through both optical and auxiliary outputs.

What you need to make it work-
- Some type of amplifier in the video I am using the Griffin 20 - which I like because it has a bluetooth input and a subwoofer output.

- Speakers

- or an iPhone/iPod dock that can receive an auxiliary input (most can).

Notes-

- Is NFC and bluetooth enabled

- When I turned on the device for the first time my iPad automatically recognized the Nyrius Songo device - making pairing very easy.

- It may go with out saying, but you will need speakers and some sort of amplifiers (or powered speakers)

- Has both an auxiliary and optical output. While the auxiliary output is rather common - the optical output is the real bonus, since it can deliver a digital output to your higher end devices.

- Nice compact design - roughly 1/2 the size of a deck of cards

- Requires external power - it is not rechargeable

Final verdict - The Nyrius Songo and NFC Receiver is a great way to use your exisitng stero or amplifier s (or a set of high end speakers) into a fully bluetooth and NFC sound system. There are more expensive integrated bluetooth speakers on the market, but the Nyrius Songo can help you forgo the high-end bluetooth speakers and use your older traditional set-up.

This is a very compact Bluetooth receiver and sound quality is excellent! The range is good (across walls and rooms). I've connected this to Polk SoundBar and produces excellent sound. It has both Optical and 3.5 Out. On the -ve side, it is not USB powered and very occasionally hear choppy sound while playing from iPhone.
