Colorful Recording, July 26, 2009
This review is from: Nystroem: Ishavet, Viola Concerto (Hommage a la France), Sinfonia Concertante for Cello and Orchestra (Audio CD)
According to the liner notes, the memoirs of Gosta Nystroem (1890-1966) were titled, "All I Recall is Joy and Light." From a composer with such an outlook we might expect lighthearted, syrupy music, but such is not the case with this CD. There is joy and light, but it is rendered in an impressionistic manner that invites repeated listening. Ishavet is a tone poem depicting the Arctic Ocean, the Viola Concerto is subtitled Hommage a la France, and the Sinfonia Concertante is a colorful score that swells like the sea. For those who enjoy subtle tone painting, these are three rewarding compositions. Incidentally, conductor Paavo Järvi is the son of the prolifically recorded Estonian conductor Neeme Järvi.
