3.0 out of 5 stars mixed emotions February 19, 2013
By bbb919
Format:MP3 Music
I was introduced to Shovels & Rope at a music festival where they easily upstaged the headliner. Then I went online and watched some videos of other live performances they have done. Then I bought this album and barely recognized some of the tracks. This album is part of a growing trend where technology is ruining music. I am completely baffled by some of the production and editing decisions that were made on some of these tracks. These are two of the most honest, genuine and talented musicians I have come across in a long time and so much of that simple charm is lost in these recordings. Go to YouTube and watch their studio performance for KEXP. Anyone who says what is on this album is better than what they did live in that studio is completely out of their mind. Their KEXP performance of Hail Hail is amazing and was the highlight of that performance for me. However, the version of Hail Hail on the album is easily the low point and is almost painful to listen to. This is one of those bands where simplicity is they key. Why would you pollute this music with unnecessary effects and instrumentation? I just don't get it.

Moral of the story, watch all of their live performances on YouTube and never miss an opportunity to see them live. As far as buying this album, I'd prefer a live version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic. See them live. July 31, 2012
By Marko
Format:Audio CD
Take a chance on this disc. You will enjoy it.

These two have the art of entertainment down pat. They are upbeat, energetic, lively, and incredibly talented singers, songwriters, and instrumentalists. As well as a couple of super cool, down-to-earth, accessible people. The music is folk-rock, as many instruments as a two-(wo)man band can muster in a song. They write striking lyrics, funny lyrics, plain old folk stories. Lots of songs about outlaws. And who doesn't like a song about outlaws?

5.0 out of 5 stars I love these two January 30, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This album is at least as good as their other collaboration - which is saying quite a bit. I caught the end of their set opening for Hayes Carll a year or so ago and bought three of their CD's (their self-titled collaboration, Cary Ann Hearst's "Lions and Lambs" and Michael Trent's "The Winner") on the way out. I've been kicking myself for not catching the entire set ever since. The albums have been three of my favorites this entire time. They sound amazing on their albums (both for Shovels and Ropes as well as on their respective solo albums), but are even better live - which speaks volumes as to their talent. I highly recommend all of their work to anyone who loves Americana. I only hope that they play near here again soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shovels and Rope rock August 4, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
My wife and I saw Shovels and Rope last night (August 3, 2012) at the Mural Amphitheatre in Seattle. I'd purchased O' Be Joyful to get ready for the show. I loved this album instantly. And I almost never say that. However, as great as the album is, their live performance was even better. I see a lot of shows. But these two were at the top of my list.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rare Brew from Hearst and Trent December 11, 2012
Format:Audio CD
O' BE JOYFUL is way up on our shortlist of great gifts for the season. Ever listen to a song and you pretty much know what's going to happen next? That NEVER happens on this album, not once. Killer vocal harmonies, New Orleans brass meets generosity along the grassy, hill-country backroads of Mississippi, unfolding choruses, songs that capture the sweetness and chaos of lived-in relationships, arrangements that only follow ebbs and flows of spirit -- do have to go on? The songwriting chops of Cary Ann Hearst feel like they were born in a bottomless well. In shades both precious and sultry, she sings lines like "You gotta copperhead kiss hidden up your sleeve" as if they were throwaways, and the melding of her voices with partner Michael Trent render grit and lilies into the miraculous. Buy this album! --Stephen Eric Berry, SwarfBomb Records, LLC, Ann Arbor, MI.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shovels and Rope December 26, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I first heard these two on a TV program that featured "Amaricana Music." I was impressed with them and I think this is a very good CD. I was surprised, in fact, that I liked every song on the recording. I'd recommend it for excellent harmonies and or the style of music.
