5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and yet sweet
I agree that this album isn't Daniela's best album. All the same, it's still brilliant. Brazilians can often be heard lamenting the 'decline' of wonderful Brazilian music, but Daniela Mercury proves that this pessimism is unjustified. 3.0 out of 5 stars not the best example of her capabilities
Daniela Mercury, "La Mercury", the queen of Axé music is a chart-buster in Brazil, but this isn't her best album. It seems to have had a lower budget, being earlier. The instrumentation on some numbers is downright cheesy. For the best taste of her capabilities, I'd recommend "Arroz e Feijão"; it's got a better variety of styles, better...

I agree that this album isn't Daniela's best album. All the same, it's still brilliant. Brazilians can often be heard lamenting the 'decline' of wonderful Brazilian music, but Daniela Mercury proves that this pessimism is unjustified. Brazilian football might be in decline, but Brazilian music isn't! I think that Daniela Mercury is one of the best singers Brazil has produced since Elis Regina. Yes, she really is that good! And like all Brazilian music, the combination of driving, complex rhythm and haunting, sensuous melody is remarkable and invigorating. Saying that this album isn't as good as her others is like saying that sapphires aren't as good as rubies, diamonds and emeralds -- all are very good! I don't believe that Daniela could ever produce something which isn't fantastic. She is a marvellous talent. I love her. When she breaks through into the US and British markets, she will blow everybody else off the stage.

This album is OTIMO! It's very Bahia, expressive and full of infectious Brazilian energy. In response to a previous critic's review regarding the "cheezy" sound of this recording, while the sound of this album does no justice for Daniela Mercury's voice AO VIVO (live), it is still a fine demonstration of her incredible talent and charisma. A must-have.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice cd.But could be better, July 28, 1998

Cd where Daniela MErcury was considered "FURACAO". But,it could be better. It hasn't got many dancing music. And,even with the big hits like "batuque","A verdade do Ile","Cotidiano",and the great hit "O canto da Cidade",her most famous song, the cd tries to be more MPB than Axe music. After all,if she is "Bahian FURACAO",the cd MUST be Bahian.

The album that made Brazilian singer Daniela Mercury a star. Belting out the title song "O canto da cidade", in a duet with Paralamas lead singer Herbert Vianna, " So pra te mostrar", or backed by the acoustics of Olodum, this album is a winner.
