Editorial Reviews

This amazing group effort appears less like a singer accompanied by
an instrumental trio, and more like a seldom-heard but amazingly
promising formula for a quartet. The singer s impeccable intonation and
flexible delivery are truly important, as the four work in the absence of a
drummer usually a most important element of Brazilian music!

Ithamara Koorax s solo album Love Dance was named in the 68th
DownBeat Readers Poll (Best Beyond Album), Independent Weekly Top
Vocal Discs, and the 45th annual Grammy Awards (Best Jazz Vocal
Album). She was listed in the Best Jazz Female Singer category in the
67th DownBeat Readers

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Rick Cornell VINE VOICE on May 23, 2011
Format: Audio CD
The conventional wisdom is that this album is not merely about a singer with accompaniment, but four musicians, interacting brilliantly. The point is made above, as well as in "Down Beat's" 4 and 1/2 star review (and when was the last time that magazine gave a rating that high to a singer?!)

I fully agree. But I think a big reason for that is the work of the sound engineering. Andy Neresheimer, the recording, mixing and mastering engineer, deserves at least as big of kudos for this wonderful album as do the musicians. Thomas Durst's bass is as clear and bright as Peter Scharli's trumpet. And rarely will you hear a piano that is as in tune as Hans-Peter Pfammater's. In terms of sound, this album compares favorably with the best recordings of ECM.

But the work of the musicians on this recording is stunning and is the first and foremost focus of this album.

Durst's sound is as fat as Charlie Haden's or Christian McBride's, IMO. And I love his bowing intro to "Para Machucar Meu Coracao."

The group functions without drums. They don't need percussion, in part because they are so in tune, but also in part because Pfammatter plays so percussively. But "percussively" and "beautifully" are not mutually exclusive concepts. Check out his intro to "O Grande Amor," for example.

Scharli is just a joy to listen to throughout. Check out his into to "Zum Zum," where he sounds reminiscent of Miles' "Bitches Brew." His clear tone throughout his registers reminds me of another great contemporary European trumpeter, Till Bronner.

And then there is Ms. Koorax. Having her sing these songs with these European musicians reminds me of the highest selling jazz album of all time. The parallels between this recording and "Getz/Gilberto" are overt.
