O Sol de Oslo is not the best album by Gilberto Gil but is definitely worth listening to! I highly recommend it to people who appreciate brazilian music.

musica sertaneja,
This review is from: O Sol De Oslo (Audio CD)
this cd was a collaboration between gil and others from the 'sertao' (the countryside) but it was made in oslo with the help of some norwegian sertanejos. there's some nice songs on here. by far the best song is lingua do pe (the p language) which uses a sort of pig latin style code in its lyrics. for those who are interested: in lingua do pe, after each syllable you add p and the same vowel sound. for instance, gipilbepertopo gipil ipis apa grepeat sipingeper. kids' stuff but makes for a cool song. some of the other more typical songs from the sertao don't really suit my tastes...slow and brooding.
if you like gil a lot, you can probably pick up this album pretty cheap and it's worth a listen. if you haven't listened to many of his other albums, start somewhere else such as with a greatest hits style like minha historia.

O Sol de Oslo - Gilberto Gil: can't stop humming,
By jqr "Know what free advice is worth" (Brooklyn) - See all my reviews
This review is from: O Sol De Oslo (Audio CD)
A lot of reviewers go on about how catchy are the songs on this or that CD. This one gets my vote for catchy melodies and snappy arrangements. One runthrough will be enough for you to have them living forever in your hindbrain. Though the songs are in Portuguese, even anglophones will find themselves humming them over and over again.
Despite the presence of world-music veterans and the insufferable liner notes, the music itself is irresistible, bubbly and thoughtful. I have spent many happy hours listening to this CD.
