If you'd lie a modern day Jane Eyre or a paranormal romance without all the werewolves and vampires that seem to saturate that genre these days this is the book. It was published in 1987, but I find it and Stone House, another of Dianne Day's earlier works, to be as good or better than her more recent works. In Obsidian, Rosamund Hill leaves Harvard Medical school after experiencing some visions of incidents before they happen. These begin shortly after her aunt and guardian since childhood dies. She begins to question her sanity and takes a leave of absence. She takes a job at Charpentier, a plantation house in South Carolina that pre-dates the War Between the States, and bears the owner's family name. Here she is to be caregiver for the owner's wife who has been suffering for years with a mental illness that has never been diagnosed. Immediately on arriving she experiences a feeling of deja vu--the house, the obsidian-like river it fronts, all appear familiar. There she is greeted by the housekeeper (Regina) that resents her presence but seems to have the owner's (Charles Charpentier) loyalty and to have control of the Arabella. Charles says his wife is evil. Rosamund finds the patient to be delusional but she definitely finds Regina to be evil. There are instances of birds and animals that are found dead with their necks broken. Then Rosamund finds out that Regina and her patient are sneaking out of the house late at night. Then the gardner disappears after Rosamund asks him to help her find out where Regina and Arabella are going at night. Rosamund has a vision that Regina has killed him, but she has no basis for reporting the murder. Rosamund continues to have other visions, but they are unexplainable. Add to this a strong attraction between Charles and Rosamund, a priest that would like to be more to Rosamund, and there are the makings for a stay-up-at night book. The characters are well defined, the story moves at a nice pace without getting bogged down.
