PROS:

Got this product yesterday (very quick delivery!) and it is exactly what it should be and what I expected. I take my Kindle outdoors a lot--including to the beach--and need a no-frills, protective cover to keep sand and moisture out, and prevent scratches. The cover is quite snug, adds no weight to the Kindle. Most importantly, the clear front screen is thick enough to prevent any scratches to the Kindle screen, without obscuring my reading, and very securely attached to the fabric cover so nothing can get in. The outer cover has markings for the buttons and the whole thing is very easy to get on and off. Cute, cheap, well-made--exactly what you need for a basic Kindle cover!

4.0 out of 5 stars What type of cover do you want? This one might work...., June 29, 2009

This review is from: OCTOVO Splash Proof Case (Fits 9.7" Display, Latest Generation Kindle DX) - Black (Electronics)
What I LIKE about the cover: The solid construction, the large see through panel, the tab markings so that you can continue to use the device while it remains in the cover (which would more or less be part of the point, correct?) the snug fit, that's not too snug, the protection offered.

What I was SURPRISED about: The construction is more solid than I anticipated. The see through portion is thicker than I thought it would be. The sides and backing are sturdier than I thought they'd be. The writing and graphics are apple green. (If you can't tell that from the photos, let me be the first to inform you.... they are green).

What I DON'T LIKE about this cover: While you can, with your fingernail, turn the DX on through the top of the cover (i.e. without opening the cover) it's not easy to do. This is not so much a design flaw as an inconvenience. They can't have a hole up there if the device is supposed to be kept safe from splashes, BUT, an indicater as to where the on off button is and perhaps a thinner fabric in that area might help. Then again, if you jam your fingernail into the cover to turn it on and off, eventually, I think you'll bore a little hole in it, and that won't be good. I also find that operating the five way mouse is more difficult, obviously, through the skin of the cover. It takes some getting used to, but it's an imperfect system. Mistakes can and will be made with the operation of the mouse through the fabric.

What is rather AMAZING about this cover is that it does a crazy excellent job of protecting the DX. We used a calculator for a demonstration and sealed it within the case. We spritzed it with water, had a dog with wet paws walk on it, dropped it in a filled sink, dropped dirt on it, dropped pet hair on it, purposely spilled a beverage next to it and then on it, got out of the shower and dripped on it, and not one molecule of water, dander, hair, or dirt made it into the case. We used a calculator so as to not actually damage the DX if, for some reason, the cover failed. It didn't fail.

So, here's the bottom line -

If you want a case that's easy to get the Kindle DX in and out of, that allows operation of the Kindle DX while it's inside, protects the Kindle from liquid and other debris, and doesn't increase the weight of the device and only minimally adds to the thickness - this is a good cover.

If you want a stand, or fashion colors, or something that also houses a pad of paper, or something that people in a coffee house will ooo and aahhh over - then you should buy a different case.

If you think that the difficulty of operating the power switch or being able to have your headphones in the top while it's completely shut will be a problem - don't buy this case.

If you are annoyed by the slightest inconvenience when it comes to operating the five direction mouse - don't buy this case.

If you are mainly interested in a protective cover that you can read through that will stop damage if someone spills coffee on you or it starts to rain and you want to shove it in your bag or under your shirt, this is a good case.

Finally, I would like to point out that I often leave the top of the case open when I'm reading (meaning I don't seal it completely) in a place where it isn't going to rain, there are no beverages or wet dogs, and no chance of odd or abrasive substances - and I find I don't have a problem with the off/on switch, then.

I'm after protection that doesn't cost a fortune. So this fits the bill.

4 Stars because of the mouse operation and power button issue.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, June 17, 2009

PROS:
- This Product does what it says, "Splash Proof". You can tell by the well fused screen to the cover, and velcro in the back. (Though I would not recommend placing your kindle-DX under water, near sand, or even test the splash capabilities. After all the DX is expensive.)
-Easy to locate and press labels for the DX's buttons
-Screen is easy to view through the plastic
-Though others have had problems, I was able to get my cover to fit perfectly over the DX

CONS:
-I would not recommend this product for the beach, since the back of the case is secured with velcro leaving the slightest openings on either side.
-It is a bit of a hassle to use the power button, as either a.) you can open the case, (as previously stated,) or, b) finagle the case with your finger until you move the power button.
-Absolutely no way to charge your kindle, without removing the cover. (Unless you flip the kindle upside down, but now the labels are on the wrong side, and upside down too!)
-Protective screen has a slight glare, and I somehow got a little bit dust on the inside, which is very difficult to remove without bringing more dust into the case
-The 5-way joystick is very difficult to use, without pressing it down, especially when you have large fingers
-No padding for protection

All-in-all this product does what it says, and can be used as a great travel case for short trips(pre-charge you kindle). I would keep this product away from the beach. Who knows, you may need this on a rainy day, but check out other cases first.

1.0 out of 5 stars Well intentioned, but not well designed..., August 4, 2009
This review is from: OCTOVO Splash Proof Case (Fits 9.7" Display, Latest Generation Kindle DX) - Black (Electronics)
This case simply doesn't fit well enough for the buttons to be lined up properly to the printed spaces on the outside of the case. It's also too difficult to use the "joystick" control. I opted for a DryPak 9"x12" case that fits the DX perfectly and is actually waterproof, not just water resistant. It's cheaper too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Functions as it's meant to, June 19, 2009
This review is from: OCTOVO Splash Proof Case (Fits 9.7" Display, Latest Generation Kindle DX) - Black (Electronics)
This is a rather basic case but it does its job. I live in Hawaii and will be using my Kindle around water and sand most of the time. This case will protect against scratches, splashes of water (I tested this and it passed the test perfectly), and sand. It does not provide 100% protection against sand and water, but I doubt anything short of a zip lock plastic bag would do that. I've had no problem using the keys, even the on/off slider and toggle nub. It does not allow charging without removal of the case. That is not a problem for me since a hole on the bottom of the case to allow charging would defeat its purpose and the case is easily removed for charging. The look is basic but I'm fine with that. I plan to get a skin from Decalgirl for the DX and the front of the skin will show through the window once applied. The case is sleek enough to fit into a heftier neoprene cover that will provide greater cushion for travel. Like mentioned in previous reviews, the window is VERY slightly off center (a hair too far to the right), otherwise I would have given this product 5 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars adequate, nothing special, a bit overpriced, June 16, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: OCTOVO Splash Proof Case (Fits 9.7" Display, Latest Generation Kindle DX) - Black (Electronics)
It is splash proof and serves it's stated purpose well. Great for use in kitchen, outside, etc. Will keep Kindle clean, not any significant added padding, light as a feather. Can read through plastic without problem, access the navigation buttons within reason although the joystick is a bit of work to move without pushing button. No holes for ports or power switch. And my viewing window was just slightly crooked (as others have commented), so if you have a touch of OCD, I would avoid this cover.

The brand names "Body Glove" and "Under Armor" come to mind when examining this product. It isn't water "proof" but is exactly what you want for the pool, boat or beach... even a dirty environment like a construction site or geology dig. A wet rag to wipe the dirt off the case before removing the Kindle should keep the device perfectly clean.

It doesn't fit perfectly but the materials are thin clear plastic and neoprene... so how would it? It fits well enough to do the job and not be obstructive.

To insert the Kindle easily I suggest flipping the top part all the way back; almost folding it back over. Then flip it back to normal after you get the Kindle situated.

Pros:
Cheap!
Keeps Water out!
More stylish than a water proof ziplock bag.

Cons:
Doesn't fit straight.
Can't manipulate buttons well.
Need to open to use power button.
Looks Cheap on the kindle DX, not Cool.
Smells plasticy, even after 5 days.

Overall: If I were going back to the beach I would probably get one for my K2 for $10-15 or so. Anything more than that, even for a DX seems extreme. It offers no drop protection and very little scratch protection for my DX. Going to replace it with something a little more robust. It doesnt make sense (for me) to have such a streamlined low drag cover for such a big device.

This review is from: OCTOVO Splash Proof Case (Fits 9.7" Display, Latest Generation Kindle DX) - Black (Electronics)
This item I bought to protect my Kindle so I could read while relaxing in a bath. It is good for that, but does make it diificult for turning the device on or changing to sleep mode as there is nothing to accomodate that. It also doesn't totally line up with the buttons on the device side, but it does protect it from water.

This review is from: OCTOVO Splash Proof Case (Fits 9.7" Display, Latest Generation Kindle DX) - Black (Electronics)
I bought this so that I could take my Kindle DX on vacation, and read on the beach without worrying about sand and salt air ruining the device. Also, I have two young girls running around and if I leave the Kindle out, as long as the cover is on, I'm not worried about spillage!

I had no problem getting my DX in, as long as you fold back the top flap the DX slides in easily. Also, others have complained that it is hard to get to the power slide button, but I was able to access that with no problem, using my fingernail to slide the power on or off through the cover without having to open it. The only time I had to take the DX out was when I needed to charge it. Visually, I couldn't see a difference when reading with or without the cover on.

All in all, this is a lightweight cover that does what it is advertised to do, and I recommend it for anyone who needs that extra layer of protection from water and other elements.
