Beautiful case with supple leather, but not without faults, January 20, 2010
This review is from: OCTOVO Vintage Leather Kindle DX Book Cover with Hinge (Fits 9.7" Display, Latest Generation Kindle DX) (Electronics)
I've had this case for about a week, and I am still impressed with the feel of the leather. Soft, rich, supple, luxurious, beautiful... all can be used to describe the quality of the case. The case construction is also top notch - the Kindle-specific hinge works perfectly and the stitching is flawless. The front cover folds back easily, allowing for comfortable one-handed handling. But even after the many superlatives used to describe the case, I am still left wrestling with a few problems. I had previously been using the black Amazon-branded hard Leather Cover and had become accustomed to the magnets that both secured the Kindle flush to the back cover, as well as kept the front cover securely fastened when closed. The Octo Vintage case does not include magnets, or any method keeping the cover securely closed. This is not so much a problem with the back flap; not only is the leather soft enough to fold without putting stress on the Kindle-specific hinge (this was a problem with the rigid black Amazon-branded case: folding back the back flap could crack the Kindle), but the Kindle can be securely fastened to the back cover by a thin strip of material on the inside bottom right corner of the case. However, the front flap does not have a method to keep is securely closed, and the soft supple leather spine allows the front cover to sort of "twist" clockwise and counter-clockwise. I don't know if that explanation makes sense, but the front flap never feels secure and moves easily. Also, handling the case while it is closed causes the five-way joystick to depress. If you pick up the closed case by the right side, you can noticeably feel the joystick being pushed down. The joystick sticks up a bit - it's easily the tallest facet on the face of the Kindle - so I can understand why the cover is pressing down on it, but I never experienced this with the black Amazon case and it's an unsettling feeling. What if I forget to put to sleep or turn off my Kindle? Carrying it around will cause the five-way control to be depressed several times and I'm a little uncomfortable thinking about what might happen. All that would be needed to rectify this would be a small square depression built into the inside of the front cover to take the joystick's height into account. Overall, extremely handsome case that could be perfect if a) the front cover had a way to be securely fastened to the Kindle, and b) the five-way control be taken into account in the design of the case. Those are the only two quibbles I had with the case, but they are big enough for me to deduct one star for each. Add a small square depression for the five-way control, and add any way of securing the front cover - I noticed previous versions of this cover had leather laces that allowed the case to be fastened shut - and this easily becomes a five-star product.

Good Looking Quality Cover for the Kindle DX - One Fixable Problem, February 6, 2010
This review is from: OCTOVO Vintage Leather Kindle DX Book Cover with Hinge (Fits 9.7" Display, Latest Generation Kindle DX) (Electronics)
Bought the Kindle DX and the Octo cover at the same time and have had both about a week now. I am very pleased with both and would recommend each without reservation. The excellent reviews for the Octo product convinced me to take a chance even though the price is not low - well you get what you pay for and I've always liked quality - and the Octo cover is quality. As other reviewers mention the feel and appearance of the cover is rich and luxurious - I like that it is a bit retro looking. The brown is very attractive and with the jet black felt-like inner fabric it sets off and compliments the white Kindle nicely. Quality stitching and attention to detail. Perfect fit over the Kindle. The cover does fold back on itself for one-hand reading and so far the leather seems like it will take this kind of stress - it is supple. Time will tell. The cover is a bit heavy but that is okay - I wanted quality and a means to protect the Kindle and the screen from pressure. The cover is nicely stiff over the screen to afford protection. Not so heavy that it is a burden to hold. The mount clamps/release mechanism for attaching to the Kindle work flawlessly and once used to them it is a simple matter to take the Kindle off and put it on the cover - 5 to 10 seconds. There is a black elastic strap, also easy to put on and take off, on the lower right corner to prevent the back cover from flopping away from the Kindle and stressing the mounting hardware and possibly causing a stress fracture of the Kindle or screen. There is no clasp or strap to keep the Octo closed but that is not a problem for me and would rather not have something that would just get in the way. One reviewer mentioned the black felt inner lining as a negative and felt it would get dirty and soiled over time. I see the black felt liner as a positive for several reasons. It is very attractive and it shows lint and dirt specs easily and lets one know it is time to clean off stuff that can transfer to the Kindle screen. In a former life I wore a dark blue police uniform and used to use a couple loops of 2" masking tape around my fingers to pat down the uniform before duty to remove lint and foreign matter. I do the same thing with the black felt on the Octo- use clear desk tape wrapped around my fingers to pat the inner cover and remove dirt specs and lint - comes out looking like new. Caution, do not use duct tape or masking tape - this has too much adhesive and you will probably end up lifting the felt off the liner - use simple clear desk tape that is not overly adhesive. Another thing I use for the Kindle and screen (that can be bought at any camera store) is "Kimtech Kimwipes" Kimtech Science KimWipes Delicate Task Wipers; 4.4 x 8.4 in. (11.2 x 21.3cm); 1-plyand ROR (Residual Oil Remover) ([...]) in a small spray bottle that is used for cleaning sensitive camera lenses and microscopes. Great for the Kindle and screen - removes all dirt, grime, fingerprints, dust, lint, etc. Another reviewer mentioned that the 5-way controller button for the Kindle protrudes above the plane of the Kindle face and this is true. When the Octo cover is shut you can feel the cover clicking down on the button and releasing. It is pretty irritating and even though I always put the Kindle to sleep before closing the cover who knows what this constant pressing and releasing of the controller button will do. The suggestion was that Octo provide a small square cutout of the leather inner pocket so the controller button can recess without having pressure applied. This is an excellent suggestion so I did it myself with an Exacta pointed knife - cut out a ½ inch square of the inner leather pocket so the controller button can seat without making contact. It works fine and there is no longer any pressure on the button when the cover is closed. Does it look a little funky - yes, but not too bad - it is in an area that no one will see (except you) and it takes care of an annoying problem. If you do this make sure to slip a piece of thin cardboard into the pocket behind the flap so you can cut without puncturing the outer flap. The leather is thick and it is unlikely you will even go through the felt inner liner - I did not. All in all a very good product. Another plus is you can attach a portable mini-light to the Octo and not to the Kindle (which might damage it).

Excellent Leather Case For Kindle DX, January 1, 2010
This review is from: OCTOVO Vintage Leather Kindle DX Book Cover with Hinge (Fits 9.7" Display, Latest Generation Kindle DX) (Electronics)
I absolutely love the look and feel of this cover. One downside is the interior is like a felt cloth and black in color, which is already showing stains and collecting dust. I can only imagine what this sucker will look like a year from now. The leather does make the Kindle look like an ordinary book and until opened, you would likely never know a Kindle was enclosed. This might help prevent theft in case I accidentally leave the unit on a car seat or public table by accident. The second downside of a cover like this is it does not protect against sand or duct in anyway. I would like to see a combo unit which does both, but looks and feels this good. Overall, I am pleased with this cover after 2 previously failed attempts and returns.
