I was very excited about getting this product, I have read all the reviews and finally talked myself into the price. I was in a motorcycle accident a year ago and loss the use of my right arm. I really enjoy this cover. All of OCTO's Kindle2 covers are great but this one adds a definitively rustic aesthetic to the space-age reading device while providing very good impact and scratch protection and without limiting port access. Also, having a stiff bifold like this makes some reading positions more comfortable to hold. Be advised, it's slightly bulky & doesn't fold back on itself, that may be a strength or a weakness depending on what you're looking for.
Also, be advised this leather shows scratches and spots; that's not to say it's damaged, more like the grain of the leather show the direction of a scratch stroke (almost like suede, although the surface of this is smooth, not suede) and it will absorb moisture spots, meaning every one is unique and appearance of the surface is dynamic over time. I think it adds to the rustic, rugged look of the case; but some people might not enjoy that. If you're looking something super-slim with a less scratchable/spottable surface, then the OCTO Faux Leather Slip Cover for Amazon Kindle 2 might be a better choice for you; however it protects/blocks USB-port & speaker access and has a slightly-less-rigid body design than this Vintage Leather Book Cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great cover for the Kindle, December 11, 2009

This review is from: OCTOVO Vintage Leather Kindle 2 Book Cover with Hinge (Electronics)
I just received this cover and I am very happy with it. I love the weathered leather look and the materials are high quality. As other reviewers mentioned, I like the juxtaposition of high tech kindle and old world leather cover. The cover is not much bigger than the Kindle itself and does not add much thickness or weight. I was concerned that some of the M-Edge covers were quite thick with padding.

The hinge holds the Kindle securely in place and the cover folds back very nicely for one handed reading. I found the Kindle, by itself, to be strangely uncomfortable to hold, I think because it is so thin. With the cover, I was very comfortable holding it for long periods, while reading and turning "pages".

I do want to offer a word of warning. This is "distressed" leather and it will pick up marks and scuffs easily. Folding back the cover will create "crease" lines in the leather at the spine. It's supposed to do that and that adds to the charm. But if that's going to bother you, you might want to choose a different cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, June 12, 2009
This review is from: OCTOVO Vintage Leather Kindle 2 Book Cover with Hinge (Electronics)
I received my case and I agree with each comment or assessment by TheThinkingDude. The case is very masculine, appears very durable and makes holding the Kindle 2 much more like a real book. This particular case fits well in my briefcase and matches that rugged scratch leather look. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys natural leather, like the appearance of outdoor strength, and someone who tends to keep things a long time, the case will be with you for a while. There is a nice interior pocket that allows you to collect and keep notes, two space for business cards or coupons. It's a keeper, a little expensive, but impressive, worth it's price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Happy, December 28, 2009

I was close to ordering the Amazon cover for $30 until I read the reviews and realized how they can do more harm than good (hinge system cracking the case). Luckily my second choice, the M-Edge Cover, was out of stock. I knew the M-Edge case would do the job, but the leather and form factor was iffy to me. Just before splurging on the $99 Cole Haan cover (which I felt was over priced), I came across the OCTO Vintage case.

From the second I pulled this case out of the packaging I knew I made the right decision.
- Sturdy design
- Great feel to the leather
- The form factor while reading is great. While folded back, the two sides sit flush against each other. The weight of the Kindle is also enough to hold the case in its open position, so you are not forced to always have a hand on the Kindle while reading.

I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a good cover. For as much as I use my Kindle, the extra $30-$40 was a no-brainer.

I'm not going to repeat what a lot of the reviews have already said other than to say I absolutely love this cover! It looks even more wonderful in person. This is very much what I wanted. I have tried to read it "naked" or with the basic black cover but I really missed the book feel that is as much part of the experience as reading words. There are too many kindle covers that just look like either business portfolios or gadget cases ala ipod type. That isn't what I wanted. Other than this cover, the cole haan covers which I like ok but this one is much cooler or the oberon covers which are beautiful but weigh 9-10 ounces as opposed to this one which weighs roughly 7 ounces are the only options for a leatherbound old world look. I love that it uses the hinges. I was hesitant because some say it won't fold back and also worried about the strings. I had no trouble folding it back and as the leather softens it would probably fold back even flatter. For long reading periods I tie the string along the side. The strings are really nice for closing it and this cover is so beautiful it really became a non-issue.

Someone said this case is manly . I am a woman and love it! I love vintage leather. If I wanted a purple or pink cover I would have gotten one.

5.0 out of 5 stars TASTEFUL & ELEGANT, February 1, 2010

I looked online at every available Kindle cover, without regard to price. I wanted a cover that protected the Kindle display, would hold the Kindle securely, and would open and shut quietly (so as not to wake a slumbering spouse). The $75 OCTO has suited me just fine. Granted, there are many less expensive covers out there, with flashy colors, and made with cheap plastic-like materials. The OCTO vintage (antiqued) leather cover features tight single stitching inside and out; even the retainer clip is sewn in the same manner. While reading in bed at night I fold the front of the cover behind the rear of the cover, allowing me to operate any of the controls with either hand. I've doubled-over the cover this way since I got it, and the OCTO's spine is showing no wear at at all. The stitching is just as snug as when I first purchased it. The inside pocket is large enough to hold airline boarding passes and receipts. The OCTO brand name is impressed on the front flap, but is far more understated than the pricier Cole Haan. I appreciate that fact, since I could care less that others know what brand I'm carrying, wearing, driving, eating, etc., so long as the product meets my needs. And the vintage leather makes it appear as though I am toting a digest-sized journal or address book. I'm glad I purchased the OCTO, and would do so again. The only negative comment I might make about the OCTO is that it's made in China (as I suspect the $99 Cole Haan cover is). But then again, the same is true with the Kindle itself, the iPhone, ....

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed, March 9, 2010

I was very excited about getting this product, I have read all the reviews and finally talked myself into the price. I was in a motorcycle accident a year ago and loss the use of my right arm. I use my kindle everyday, it is the only way I can read a book and enjoy it. I was able to upgrade because of my friend, that said i needed a good case but also wanted it to be nice. I think $50 is as much as a case should cost, but based on the reviews my wife said yes so I ordered it, like i said the price was a bit much for us, well I received it today and the first thing I noticed was that the front cover did not line up with the back. I thought for the price it should be perfect, I put my kindle in and sure enough the cover does not cover the kindle by a little under a 1/4" So I decided to call OCTO but their phone number does not work. So the only thing I can do is send it back. There is no way I will pay that much for a cover that is short, that is something i would expect from a case of $15. Oh well I guess I am very disappointed, I had such high hopes that paying more would in the end give me a better quality product. I think its just a big gimmick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handsome Case, April 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: OCTOVO Vintage Leather Kindle 2 Book Cover with Hinge (Electronics)
I spent a lot of time searching for the right case to compliment my Kindle. It can be difficult to decide when very few vendors actually carry them in stock for you to handle before purchasing. One of the main things that drew me to the Octo case was the inclusion of the hinge system present in the Amazon case as well as a single retaining strap to secure the Kindle to the back cover. Most complaints regarding the hinge system seem to be caused by the Kindle falling forward away from the back of the cover and placing stress on the case causing cracks, with the strap in the lower left corner the Kindle is held in place and will not cause stress fractures.

As for the appearance of the cover I love it! The whole outside is done in a distressed brown leather which will pick up scratches, scuffs, and moisture easily. If you are looking for a cover that will wear like a tank and look brand new 6 months down the road than this cover is not for you. I on the other hand love that my cover looks worn and handled and feel it lends to the sensation of holding an old leather bound book. The leather itself is very soft and warm feeling, not shiny or hard like many electronics cases. The front cover folds back fully exactly like the Amazon case for one handed reading.

My biggest complaint is the inside pocket. It is to small to accommodate a standard sheet of paper and much to large and deep to effectively hold business cards or small notes. It also lends to the thickness of the front cover which causes it to press the small joystick when held tightly. Another word of warning, this cover is heavy. After placing it on the Kindle I would place the total weight well over a pound. It's not terrible but if you like to read on your back or read one handing for long periods of time it can become fatiguing.

I am so happy with my case and wouldn't send it back at this point for anything. The hinge and strap design are the best of both worlds and the leather is amazing in the hands. 5 Stars all the way!

5.0 out of 5 stars OCTO Vintage Leather Cover, January 31, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: OCTOVO Vintage Leather Kindle 2 Book Cover with Hinge (Electronics)
I read all the reviews before I decided to buy this cover. It was important for me to get the purchase right, the first time. I sucked a little air at the price, but the reviews made all the difference in my decision. I also ordered a burlwood skin for the Kindle 2 so that any coloration transfer would be minimal. I love the way the cover feels in my hands, the way it looks and the way it hinges into the Kindle 2. By creating this unique look and feel, my Kindle 2 is developing an authentic, independent spirit. I may even name it! It is, oh, so much more than a solitary book or a pet rock to put on the shelf...

I've tried a few different covers for my Kindle, including most of the various M-Edge styles. And let's be honest, most of them get the job done while also being less expensive. This cover, however, is in a league of its own. The workmanship is top-notch and I am sure this case will last as long as I want it to. In addition to its durability, this is also by far the most attractive case I've come across. The beautiful leather is a delight both to touch and see, and I expect its aesthetic appeal will only improve over time as the leather ages and acquires its own unique pattern of wear.

The price is, admittedly, a little on the steep side, but this is a premium product and it's worth paying a premium price. In the end, it just depends on what your needs are. If you're looking for a basic, utilitarian case, there's nothing wrong with any of the inexpensive M-Edge models. But if you're looking for a high-quality cover that will both protect your Kindle AND actually enhance your reading experience, this is the way to go.
