Make the Shift to Vertex 460

Combining OCZ’s own controller design with the latest generation of flash, Vertex 460 keeps your computing experience ahead of the game.

Performance Should LAST

Fresh-out-of-the-box every SSD is fast. Due to the nature of NAND flash, SSDs get “dirty” over time and the fast performance you once loved is destined to degrade. Vertex 460 is not afraid to play dirty and continues to lead in performance while others drop significantly.

Reliability and durability from the inside out

With quality SSD technology built into every drive, the Vertex 460 Series is built to provide years of hard drive-humiliating performance. Ditch that spinning HDD for some storage peace of mind.

Less Lag

OCZ SSDs offer industry-leading low latency, enabling faster access to data and a more responsive computer. Optimize an old notebook or maximize a modern PC.

Proprietary Technology

It’s through cutting-edge technology that OCZ has set itself apart from the rest. Our secret sauce is in our advanced suite of flash management.

Award-Winning Innovation

With innovative storage features, OCZ promises to change your computing expectations and live up to the hype of using an SSD.

Advanced Endurance

Worried about the lifespan of flash memory? OCZ increases durability and maximizes the life expectancy of the flash in each SSD.

Beyond the Box

OCZ SSDs deliver lasting performance and reliability long after the initial ‘fresh-out-of-the-box’ experience.

Bottom Line - Noticeably faster than Samsung. Tested using Samsung's Magician Utility. Updated Samsung to latest firmware today, July 31, 2014. Slightly different results compared to June 28, 2014 results when the OCZ SSD was new. Samsung SSD was newly formatted and trimmed today.

Sequential Read MB/s: OCZ 507 Samsung 542 = 7% in favor of Samsung
Sequential Write MB/s: OCZ 501 Samsung 258 = 94% in favor of OCZ

Random Read IOPS: OCZ 51,678 Samsung 42,921 = 20% in favor of OCZ
Random Write IOPS: OCZ 33,742 Samsung 37,981 = 13% in favor of Samsung

Comparison to Toshiba 500 GB hard disk below so that you can see how much faster SSDs are than standard hard drives:

Sequential Read MB/s: OCZ 507 Toshiba HD 47 = OCZ 10.8 times faster
Sequential Write MB/s: OCZ 501 Toshiba HD 66 = OCZ 7.6 times faster

Random Read IOPS: OCZ 51,678 Toshiba 515 = OCZ 100 times faster
Random Write IOPS: OCZ 33,742 Toshiba 318 = OCZ 106 times faster

Generally speaking, a SSD is 10 times faster than a conventional hard drive for sequential read/write and 100 times faster for random read/write IOPS.

I built a system in July 2013 and bought a Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB SSD which has worked quite well, except that it has never quite felt as fast as I thought it should be. I use Samsung's TRIM utility regularly. I received this OCZ 240 GB SSD a few days ago. I also bought an OCZ SSD several months ago and it is running in a second desktop computer with Windows 8 and has worked quite well. I decided to first clone the Samsung SSD to a 10,000 RPM WD VelociRaptor 250 first just so I could put it through a thorough disk defragmention so that the data would be compacted.

I debated on buying a SSD for quite a while, but when the price for the 480 GB hit less than $250 with the rebate I took the plunge. I settled on the OCZ Vertex 460 because of its very good reviews on Amazon and many other sites.

Purchased on July 25th and was amazed when Amazon had it delivered on Sunday the 27th using the free shipping. I installed it the next day and was happy with how easy it was to installed using the included software (downloaded from OCZ web site). Took about 2 hours to clone my old hard drive and get the SSD up and running. Was very happy with the increase in speed that my PC showed. The Windows 7 performance rating went from 5.4 on my WD Black hard drive to 7.9 with the OCZ SSD.

One week later, 8/5, the SSD began showing read errors. Ran chkdsk and it found a couple of dozen corrupted files. Chkdsk would not finish it's process, kept hanging up on "verifying Usn Journal". After running it several times and getting hung up at the same point, the SSD would no long boot, said data was corrupted.

To make a long story short, I ended up re-formating the SSD and reloading everything from a backup. This time I kept a cloned copy of the SSD on my old hard drive. SSD worked well for another 2-3 days and then did it again, showing read errors. Ran chkdsk and had same problems as before. However, this time the PC crashed and would not boot to the SSD. Booted to my old hard drive and tried to format the SSD again, but it wouldn't even format. After waiting an hour or so for it to format, I had to reboot. After that, the PC could no longer even find the SSD. Tried everything I could think of, swapped cables and power feeds, but it was completely dead.

SSD solutions are largely defined by cost, speed, controller, and warranty. The OCZ Vertex 460 is the mainstream line of OCZ SSD product portfolio and utilize their in house Indilinx Barefoot 3 controller and Toshiba NAND memory. The Vertex 460 uses the same controller and NAND as found in their performance Vector 150 product. The only difference is a slower speed on the controller and a lower endurance rating on the NAND. The Vertex 460 is competitive with equivalent products from other manufacturers and like the Vector 150 has very consistent read/write speeds. Regarding warranty, the Vertex 460 has a shorter warranty than their Vector 150 product due to the lower endurance rating of the NAND modules. Please be aware that the warranty is both time (3 years) and use (20/GB per day) limited. For non-power users (the products target market), 20GB per day should be sufficient. The Vertex 460, like the Vector 150, is its power hungry at idle compared to similar drives from competitors. In a desktop environment this is likely a non-issue. But for laptop use, it could be an issue.

Given the relatively close cost between the Vertex 460 ($125) and Vector 150 ($155) and the difference in warranty and speed, I would recommend buying the Vector 150 over the Vertex 460. I view the increased cost worth what you get in return. If OCZ dropped the cost of the Vertex 460 by $25 it would be easier to recommend.
