Make the Shift to Vertex 460

Combining OCZ’s own controller design with the latest generation of flash, Vertex 460 keeps your computing experience ahead of the game.

Performance Should LAST

Fresh-out-of-the-box every SSD is fast. Due to the nature of NAND flash, SSDs get “dirty” over time and the fast performance you once loved is destined to degrade. Vertex 460 is not afraid to play dirty and continues to lead in performance while others drop significantly.

Reliability and durability from the inside out

With quality SSD technology built into every drive, the Vertex 460 Series is built to provide years of hard drive-humiliating performance. Ditch that spinning HDD for some storage peace of mind.

Less Lag

OCZ SSDs offer industry-leading low latency, enabling faster access to data and a more responsive computer. Optimize an old notebook or maximize a modern PC.

Proprietary Technology

It’s through cutting-edge technology that OCZ has set itself apart from the rest. Our secret sauce is in our advanced suite of flash management.

Award-Winning Innovation

With innovative storage features, OCZ promises to change your computing expectations and live up to the hype of using an SSD.

Advanced Endurance

Worried about the lifespan of flash memory? OCZ increases durability and maximizes the life expectancy of the flash in each SSD.

Beyond the Box

OCZ SSDs deliver lasting performance and reliability long after the initial ‘fresh-out-of-the-box’ experience.

Bottom Line - Noticeably faster than Samsung. Tested using Samsung's Magician Utility. Updated Samsung to latest firmware today, July 31, 2014. Slightly different results compared to June 28, 2014 results when the OCZ SSD was new. Samsung SSD was newly formatted and trimmed today.

Sequential Read MB/s: OCZ 507 Samsung 542 = 7% in favor of Samsung
Sequential Write MB/s: OCZ 501 Samsung 258 = 94% in favor of OCZ

Random Read IOPS: OCZ 51,678 Samsung 42,921 = 20% in favor of OCZ
Random Write IOPS: OCZ 33,742 Samsung 37,981 = 13% in favor of Samsung

Comparison to Toshiba 500 GB hard disk below so that you can see how much faster SSDs are than standard hard drives:

Sequential Read MB/s: OCZ 507 Toshiba HD 47 = OCZ 10.8 times faster
Sequential Write MB/s: OCZ 501 Toshiba HD 66 = OCZ 7.6 times faster

Random Read IOPS: OCZ 51,678 Toshiba 515 = OCZ 100 times faster
Random Write IOPS: OCZ 33,742 Toshiba 318 = OCZ 106 times faster

Generally speaking, a SSD is 10 times faster than a conventional hard drive for sequential read/write and 100 times faster for random read/write IOPS.

I built a system in July 2013 and bought a Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB SSD which has worked quite well, except that it has never quite felt as fast as I thought it should be. I use Samsung's TRIM utility regularly. I received this OCZ 240 GB SSD a few days ago. I also bought an OCZ SSD several months ago and it is running in a second desktop computer with Windows 8 and has worked quite well. I decided to first clone the Samsung SSD to a 10,000 RPM WD VelociRaptor 250 first just so I could put it through a thorough disk defragmention so that the data would be compacted.

I have 2 Samsung 840 Evo drives. They are good drives but have zero customer service and if you happen to have an AMD system, good luck updating the firm ware. I decided to try an OCZ. I am glad I did. This thing is built like a brick s*** house. I swear it is a solid block of aluminum. The speed is fantastic and the ease of installation is great. I am sold on OCZ.

A thin, well-built drive. Great performance in a small package. The included 3.5" adapter bracket is handy for those upgrading desktops. Also included is a "I love my SSD" sticker.

Write performance is outstanding. I overwrote the entire drive (zero-ed all blocks) 3x in a row without any performance degradation, despite using raw writes ("dd" in UNIX, so TRIM is not being invoked). The sustained 135MB/s recorded in my USB3 Plugable SATA dock is the fastest I've seen from that dock so far. The 7mm height of the drive is meant to fit ultrathin laptops, but makes the drive rattle in some external cases designed for thicker 2.5" drives. In those cases, a small piece of heat-safe foam (or other padding) helps keep the skinny drive in place.

The "sweet spot" of SSD pricing continues to drop, but for the moment this size (200-300GB) is the best price vs capacity tradeoff. SSD adoption is still increasing and there's new models most every week, so today's top-rated item might be in the middle-of-the-pack in a few months. It's wise to check for newest reviews as well as compare the many different available models. Also, it now seems unnecessary to buy spinning drives any smaller than 300GB (maybe 500GB if you're not as price conscious).

The OCZ name almost disappeared from SSD after the company's bankruptcy this past winter, but Toshiba bought the SSD division and this new drive shows they are serious about continuing the lineage.

A fast, solid drive from an old name in flash products, now run by Toshiba. Recommended.

The overall feeling of having an SSD is snappiness. It's not exactly mind blowing speed, but you will notice how slow other computers without SSDs are. In today's computer age, an SSD is practically the only thing you can do to boost your performance. Upgrading other things like CPU and RAM have become application dependent.

OCZ offers two SSDs Vertex 460 vs Vector 150. When I did research online between these two units, I found that the difference is in warranty. The Vector 150 is warranted for 5 years at 50GBs/day of write endurance, while the Vertex 460 is warranted for 3 years at 20GBs/day of write endurance. Heavy users may find the 50% increase in price worth the addition 300% increase in durability. The Vector 150 probably goes through a more careful selection of chips to justify such confidence.

THE PACKAGE

The Vertex 460 package comes with a 3.5" adapter and mounting screws for desktops; a sticker that says "I love/OCZ my SSD"; a SSD installation Manual; and an activation key for Acronis True Image HD cloning software to copy your existing HD to the new SSD.

Note: The included adapter may not work with a small number of desktops such as the HP Z820 Workstation, where the computer's SATA port is in a fixed position. You will require an SSD Converter Bracket from NewerTechnology.

When I picked up the SSD, I noticed it was heavier (50% more) than Samsung 840 series. While it feels more substantial, which is nice; this will add overall weight to laptops. On the other hand, it is still lighter than a 2.5" HDD (25% less).

CLONING

You can use the included Acronis software to Clone the drive. Laptops will require a way to connect the SSD to it, such as the Voyager S3 from NewerTechnology.
