Fast and Quiet, September 12, 2009
This review is from: OCZ Technology 250 GB Vertex Series Mac Edition SATA II 2.5 Inch Solid State Drive (SSD) OCZSSD2-1VTXA250G (Personal Computers)
I upgraded my late 2008 Unibody Macbook Pro with this drive, and so far I'm very happy with it. My computer runs faster and much quieter. I'm expecting better reliability, but won't know for 5 years or so.
Since the newer Macbook Pros are designed for easy HW drive upgrades, it took only about 15 minutes to change drives. I bought a Torx T6 and Phillips #00 from Amazon when I ordered the drive.

Super fast, but...., July 1, 2009
This review is from: OCZ Technology 250 GB Vertex Series Mac Edition SATA II 2.5 Inch Solid State Drive (SSD) OCZSSD2-1VTXA250G (Personal Computers)
First of all, a couple warnings:
1. The "Mac" version of this product is exactly the same as the regular version, sans the "Mac" sticker. You may be able to get a better price by purchasing the PC version instead. [...]
2. The drive I received had an out of date firmware. It came with 1.10, 1.30 is current. If yours comes with a firmware previous to 1.30, you'll need to update it. The directions & downloads are available at the manufacturer's forums (previous link).
3. Unibody MacBooks and MacBook Pros are having some issues with these drives and the 1.30 firmware and previous. The drives periodically drop offline. Currently, it looks like most these problems are caused by iStat widgets. I've removed those from my system and it's been stable since.
4. If it weren't obvious, these drives aren't exactly ready for consumption by the regular AOL set. If flashing firmware scares you, you're best off looking for another drive, or just ordering the SSD option from Apple.
But.... the benefits.
OMG this drive is super duper fast. The speed improvements I received with the Apple shipped Samsung SSD have more than doubled with this drive! Instantly wakes from sleep, hibernates in seconds, boots quickly and apps launch on first bounce (MS word in less than 2 seconds!).
Like most SSDs, these are lower power devices and are virtually impervious to shock damage.
The estimated life on these (Mean Time Between Failures) is approximately 70 years! Try getting that lifespan out of a traditional platter based hard disk drive (which is the main benefit for SSDs for me).

NOT suitable for Mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13", November 9, 2010
This review is from: OCZ Technology 250 GB Vertex Series Mac Edition SATA II 2.5 Inch Solid State Drive (SSD) OCZSSD2-1VTXA250G (Personal Computers)
DO NOT purchase this drive and expect it to last long in a MacBook Pro 13", mid-2009 model.
Installation of this drive into my MacBook Pro 13" was very easy, following a duplication of my OEM drive using SuperDuper. The Vertex resulted in amazing improvements in the general speed of my computer -- start up, shut down, and saving data applications like Aperture and DevonThink, which both use large database-like structures.
BUT, after about 3 months, the drive just died in September 2009. I had never in 7 years of using Macs seen a gray screen with a big question mark, but there it was one morning, completely ruining my day! The drive had become completely unrecognizable by the MacBook (with no warning signs, I might add). I returned the drive to OCZ, at my expense, and they sent a replacement. OCZ admitted they were having difficulty with MacBook Pro 13" models generally. After my initial experience, and reading then-current comments on the OCZ forums, I determined the drive was still an unreliable choice for my MacBook Pro 13". I did not want to go through the hassle of swapping internal drives if the Vertex failed a second time. So . . . I sold it on eBay with the warning that it should not be used in a MacBook Pro 13.
Very disappointed in OCZ, as this product is labeled as "Mac Edition", and OCZ touts it as being compatible with Macs. They even charge a premium for the "Mac compatibility". OCZ was pleasant to work with on a return, but I hope they spend more time in the future testing products before "certifying" them for Mac use. Whether the blame rests with Apple or OCZ is irrelevant. Honesty is the only fair approach for customers. I do not know if OCZ has truly corrected the problem I encountered, but I would recommend a thorough investigation before purchasing this drive.
