I only used one other strut spring compressor, before I used the OEM model. It was a single screw, twin armed unit from a store that specializes in inexpensive Chinese import tools. This unit jammed, and would not release tension on the compressed spring after the strut unit was replaced. After several hours attempting to free the jammed tool, I got a pair of these OEM strut spring compressors. The OEM spring compressors enabled me to compress the spring further, and get the other compressor off the spring. I used the OEM spring compressors to change 4 strut units without any complications. In fact, the OEM spring compressors made the job quite easy. The OEM safety pin detent holds the safety pin in place, and you don't have to worry about the safety pin moving while you are compressing or decompressing the spring. Keep an eye on them, just for your own safety, though. This was not the case with the other tool, by the way. Those safety pins would not stay in place. I like the OEM tool's wide contact area on the spring. It seems this would decrease the tendency for the spring compressor to move or slip as the spring is compressed. These spring compressors stayed in place while I was compressing the spring, and while I released tension on the spring.I highly recommend these OEM strut spring compressors; they work great, and the manufacturing quality seems very high.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best and safest spring compressor ever used., November 24, 2009

For the low purchase cost of this product I had worries about how well they would be built and how they would last. When I opened the carton to examine I was surprised at how robust they were made and when we used them I had confidence in their holding/gripping ability. I felt safe in the use of them and with the other manufacuturers pair that I threw away I never really felt as safe. Do I recommend them for the home mechanic, you bet I do and I will buy another pair if and when they ever wear out.

5.0 out of 5 stars They compress! Wow!, October 11, 2009

They work pretty much as advertised. I used them on a full 4 strut install, and these compressors never seized or jammed, nor were they ever too difficult to use with hand tools. I wouldn't say they were a joy to work with (only because compressing springs is rarely a joyful business) but they certainly didn't add to the frustration of the install.

Honestly, if you're considering cheaping out and going with a less expensive brand, don't; just get these. This is not an area you want to cheap out on - dealing with jammed compressors is not fun.

I bought this tool for a strut replacement that I was not ready to shell out $500 in labor for. The tool performed exactly as expected. The lesson learned was to plan tool placement on the springs so that you can use a ratchet for the tightening and loosening. The wrench worked fine but at 1/2 turn at a time it took a loooong time to tighten.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good tool for the do it yourselfers!, April 5, 2010

I changed out a strut and coil spring with this compressor this weekend and it worked well. I've used other compressors before and they do not work! Infact they are dangerous and do not compress the spring far enough. This tool compressed the spring far enough and it felt like a safe operations. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I don't like the shafts. It should have been made out of acme shaft but instead it is normal thread. Also, the shafts should have be larger diameter. The big thing here is to keep your thread clean and lubricated everytime you compress. With alittle care, they will last a long time and work great. But for under $40...it works great. I actually look forward to changing out struts now. I'll throw in one more tip: If you are changing struts on a vehicle that you are going to keep for a while - consider purchasing a "quick strut"...they come with new coil springs. I've had coil springs break on my last two cars. [...] will give you the best deal.

I used this to change the shocks on my wrx which the shop told me would be 1100 dollars and I did it for a grand total of 560. They are made of high quality materials and got the job done with ease.

Used these on my old Hyundai Elantra, first time I've done a strut change. They worked great and seemed sturdy. They didn't slip or walk around the spring.

Since I lost parts to my old one and needed to a job fairly quickly, this fit the bill. Not the greatest but, for the price, a very good value. The keepers are a nice feature and save the safety step of wiring the pieces together. This is what I call an O.I.L. tool (once in a longtime) and therefore it's not really necessary to invest a lot of money. I'm not a professional mechanic but work on my fleet quite often.
