Product Description

From the Manufacturer

This Piston Ring Compressor is ideal for the small garage or the individual repair job. The self-locking ratchet piston ring compressor with double tension band and heavy duty pawl is designed to handle most types of rings in the majority of passenger cars, including those that are channeled and segmented. It has a beaded edge so that the compressor can't enter a cylinder with a piston. The 1/2-inch wide spring bands equalize the tension over the entire belt width so that the spring assembly may be compressed into the groove until it's flush with the piston. 2-band design, 2-1/8-inch to 5-inch range. 3-1/2-inch deep.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth a dollar, don't buy this., June 8, 2011

I intended to use this to install pistons in my current project, a 345 International Harvester. After installing 2 pistons it broke. It also did not do a very good job of holding the rings in place, they tended to droop out of the bottom at every opportunity, keeping the piston from dropping down. I could tell that this would not last long, as I could see the metal was deforming in areas almost right away, but it didn't make it.

This is not a long term investment, it is at best a "hope and pray it finishes one engine" item.

I had to get the pistons in, so I went to a local O'Reilly's and bought a tool that worked great, and it is only 2 dollars more:

Don't mess around, buy this one instead. There are likely better units, but if you are an occasional jobber, this will get it done.

4.0 out of 5 stars piston ring compressor as pipe shrinker, July 11, 2010

I got this piston ring compressor for a project involving 4 inch plastic sewer & drain pipe to make a dust collection system for my wood-working shop. When the drain pipe is a little too large to slide into a fitting, I heat it to soften it a little and use the piston ring compressor to make the pipe just a little smaller. After the pipe cools it stays the smaller size and slides esily into the mating fitting. It works very well for this purpose.

I purchased this tool to use in my trade as a GM technician and when i needed it i discovered the bands are in the middle of the tool, not toward one end as pictured. That makes it harder to make sure the rings will not catch on the top of the block. I also discovered the clip did not work well. Worst of all the bands broke on the 3rd piston i was trying to install. Would not buy that one if you need to install more then 2 pistons!
