Keith Morris...nothing more to say!!
I’ve had conflicting feelings about OFF! ever since they debuted with their First Four EPs collection in 2011. On paper the idea of Keith Morris (Black Flag/Circle Jerks) revisiting his hardcore roots is an exciting one. The current cultural climate in America is screaming out for a caustic voice to throw a middle finger high in the air, and Morris, along with Dmitri Coats (Burning Brides), Stephen McDonald (Red Kross) and Mario Rubalcaba (Rocket From The Crypt/Hot Snakes) should be applauded for answering the call with a batch of venomous polemics aimed at everyone and everything. There are some serious problems with OFF! though. Mostly, it’s just hard for me to fully endorse a band so hell-bent on recreating the look and sound of early-Black Flag. Dmitri Coats uses Greg Ginn’s playing style and tone throughout the album’s 16-minute runtime, album opener “Wiped Out” is uncomfortably close to Black Flag’s 1978 debut single “Nervous Breakdown”, and Morris quotes the Flag’s “You Bet We’ve Got Something Personal Against You” at the end of “I’ve Got News For You”. Raymond Pettibon even does the cover-art, which makes it all but impossible not to be consumed by thoughts of Black Flag when listening to OFF! Being influenced by Black Flag is a great thing, but trying so hard to replicate their sound and vibe is another, and given the choice between hearing the original or a 2012 recreation, I’ll choose the original every time. Even if you disregard all the issues of cultural context and over-reliance on influences, OFF!’s songs just aren’t as good as the best of the original hardcore movement, which is what matters most.Read more ›
OFF! was put together by former Black Flag and Circle Jerks front man Keith Morris. Anyone who listened to harcore punk in the eighties should know Morris as one of the true originators of west coast punk rock. A Hermosa Beach, California native, Morris put Black Flag together with guitarist Greg Ginn and the two proceeded to create the true California punk sound. Drugs and butting heads got Morris a ticket out and Hank Rollins in. But Morris jumped back and formed one of the most respected and revered hardcore punk bands of the eighties: Circle Jerks. Keith Morris made records with Circle Jerks throughout the eighties and nineties till they went on hiatus. In 2010, Morris formed OFF! with guys from bands like Burning Brides, Rocket From the Crypt and Red Kross. After putting out 4 EPs filled with youthful vitriol and a mix of hardcore punk and heavy metal thunder, OFF! have released their debut long player. If you consider a 16 minute album a long player. Hey, it's punk. So bugger off!
`Wiped Out' comes in like a hammer through a windshield to start things up. This is what hardcore is supposed to sound like. If you grew up thinking Green Day and Rancid were punk rock, you are sorely mistaken. Somewhere between Never Mind The Bollocks and the Nervous Breakdown EP, `Wiped Out' clocks in at whiplash speed of 1:13. OFF! gets in and gets out. No need to stay with a song anymore than you have to. `I Got New For You' pogos into your ears and leaves you numb in a whopping 0:41.Read more ›

The music is fine, though not as good as their earlier EPs.... However, these guys are putting out 16-17 minute CDs at full-price ($10-13). Value for the money is very low.Published 19 months ago by J. Dunn
