Good, but not really the "Best Of ... ",
By
This review is from: The O'Franken Factor Factor: The Very Best of The O'Franken Factor (Audio CD)
I love the Al Franken Show (formerly the O'Franken Factor). When I heard they were putting out a CD, I could think of a lot of funny bits I wanted to be on it. Unfortunately, they didn't all make it!This is a decent CD, but I think they missed some really funny stuff, and put sone not-so-funny stuff on the disc. Take the "Oy-oy-oy Show" for example. I love the "Oy-oy-oy Show," but the specific "Show" they put on the disc is far from the funniest. And where are any of the "Countering Hannity's Lies" segements? At least one should have made it. Still, we get "My Drugs Are Red, White, and Blue," "Mission Accomplished," the hilarious Bebe Nueworth impersonation of Ann Coulter, and the best Condi Rice impression ever ("But I'm a RUSSIA expert!"). So overall, it's good to have a Franken CD ... especially in the car, since I can only listen to AAR via the Internet. It's just a guess, but I'm willing to bet dollars to doughnuts that "R. Reeves" below hasn't listened to this CD ... and probably doesn't listen to Air America, either. Honestly, this is a 3 1/2 star CD, but I rounded up to counter his ignorant "review."

Funny... and factual,

As a regular listener at airamericaradio.com, I was familiar with some of the material presented on this disc. It makes an excellent gift for those who aren't fortunate enough to have access to the show, or for those who stubbornly refuse to listen to both sides of the debate. The track "Flippity-Floppity" is particularly insightful, outlining the many issues George W. Bush has flip-flopped on. It should be required listening for people who have been led to believe that Bush is a "straight-shooter." A wonderful effort by Al Franken and Katherine Lanpher!

Someone once asked why most liberal commentators were comedians... my response is ... how can they not be?!Frankin's work here is his best stuff since the early Saturday Night Live Days. Good radio show too.

Regretfully not the best part of a great radio show,

This review is from: The O'Franken Factor Factor: The Very Best of The O'Franken Factor (Audio CD)
This is a review submitted with regret by a big fan of Al Franken and Air America Radio (and also of his recent book, Lies and Lying Liars). The problem is that CD fails to well represent the best material on the radio show. Instead of "The Very Best of the O'Franken Factor," it would be more accurately titled "The Silliest Skits & Songs of the O'Franken Factor." Some of the skits and songs are good, but that isn't the heart of the radio show. And too much of the space in the CD is taken up with long, slow, ponderous set-ups which are perfectly in place in a radio show which fills three hours every weekday, but which are much too slow-paced for a CD. This fan of Al Franken wishes that he would find another set of editors and piece together a well-cut, fast-paced montage of the many great dialogues in which he exposes the lies and absurdities of the right wing. His best comedy is based on fact. For example, the one section of the CD which is really worth inclusion, because it is completely factual, is number 5, "Flippity-Floppity," which cuts apart the Bush record with a recital of outrageous facts. As in Lies and Lying Liars, a great book, it is the fact-stranger-than-fiction which is the true comedy in his work. Please Al, you are a great American and a great comic. Please put out another CD which represents the true quality of your work. I'll buy the other version and not begrudge the money I wasted on this one.

But where are the classics?,

Anything from The Factor is always welcome. But where are the bits we all know and love? Where are the Phone Number Song, the Blog Song, the Christy Harvey Song, the Joe Conason Song(s), My Sirota, We Will Brock You, the O'Lielly Calypso Song and ANYTHING from Curtis, our favorite undecided voter? Can't wait for volume 2!

Al Franken As Funny As Ever,
By
This review is from: The O'Franken Factor Factor: The Very Best of The O'Franken Factor (Audio CD)
This CD is as funny as Al Franken's radio program on "Air America." Cut #26, called "Sorry" is hysterical. The interview with George Bush discussing his service, or lack of service, in Alabama hits the nail right on the head. Well worth the money and would make a great gift for friends & family.

Enjoyable satirical skits and music,
By Sandy Eggo (California USA) - See all my reviews

These skits and music poke fun at the right wing, current politics and the Iraq war and some of these topics are not pretty. I find that the presentation makes them more palatable so I can consider them longer before my brain shuts out the insanity of today's political situation.Al Franken isn't limiting his work to comedy these days, his Air America show is full of information that NPR sometimes picks up a week or two later, or never. Unlike Rush and O'Reilly, he and his staff are careful about checking their facts and being accurate. I enjoy the show and like having these excerpts.

Timely, funny, but not the funniest,

This review is from: The O'Franken Factor Factor: The Very Best of The O'Franken Factor (Audio CD)
Well, right wing radio has certainly dominated the airwaves for some time now. Morons like Limbaugh; stalinist thugs like O'Reilly; neonazis like Coulter. So those of us who'd rather be informed and/or entertained by someone from the planet earth deserve all that is Franken. So I got this CD. It starts with a mimic or George Bush--indicating what we all know (thought, it seems, only half of us acknowledge, that Bush's "military" career was so distinguished that, if I were to have done the same thing, I'd be eating three squares a day in Leavenworth!) The occasional "right wing non-lies of the week" make the CD worth it. Then there's the piece on Accountants Without Borders. How could one argue that the Third World would be so much better with their books balanced?? Some of the most amusing portions are those of Ann Coulter in the background complaining of how the show's staff and hosts aren't up to her mighty social stands. I don't know that she could have done a better job on herself than that! And "outsourced Al" is another good one. The whole CD is amusing. No, it's not the funniest I've ever heard. In fact, I encourage people to tune into Al on Air America and enjoy that. But this will certainly tide you over if you're sick of the "conservative" hogwash we've been hearing on the radio for too many years now.

I love Al Franken. I highly recommend any of his books - especially the audio editions, read by Franken himself. I listen to them a couple of times a year. This CD, however, is just not funny. You win some, you lose some. Lies/Liars - that's funny! This - no.

This is not an Autocracy,
This review is from: The O'Franken Factor Factor: The Very Best of The O'Franken Factor (Audio CD)
"Al Franken should be put in jail for hating America. After 9/11, this moron still thinks it is okay to criticize our government and president. The guys who wrote the PATRIOT ACT (GO USA!) should kick in his front door, and drag him away to prison forever. No trial for traitors!" - from a reviewerSo, apparently, this guy likes a Saddam-like government, where opposition to the ruler is punishable by jail or death. That's a fairly UN-American sentiment. That individual is in the wrong country and has the wrong concept of democracy. This show answers to the liar Limbaugh who only robotically repeats talking points from Rove. Independent thinking is what made this country great, and what makes the country strong. Being obedient to one ideology weakens a democracy. This is funny, supported by government documentation, and O'Franken isn't an oxycoton junkie. |
