I actually ordered this as a replacement knife. My first Olfa knife was so awesome it was permanently borrowed, but that wont happen to this one! I really love how this knife feels when you are cutting for long periods of time. I also really love the secure way the blade is held in place. Most knifes out there can feel kind of cheep or unsteady in your hand due to poor construction, but the olfa feels really stable and secure. As a working fine artist I use this knife almost every day, so the fact that it can use any standard blade and always delivers day after day really makes it worth the price! If you are thinking about this knife I say you won't be disappointed!

I bought one to try and have bought two more as gifts for friends because these are unique. Most knife handles clamp the blade on the two flat sides and hold it in place by friction. If you too have experienced a blade shifting in a handle then you will appreciate these too. These handles grip the blade by clamping the two edges. There are two slots that hold the blade and then squeeze it edge to edge. You will snap off the blade before you move it in the handle. The blade is easily changed with about a half turn of the clamp collar. They are heavier than an aluminium handle, have a stud that prevents it from rolling, a softish rubber material in the grip, and are guaranteed for life. I'm a fan of OLFA blades but any art/hobby blade will fit.

I always used X-ACTO brand art knives, but recently have seen their quality slip as they have moved their manufacturing overseas. So, I actually got started with the OLFA brand by trying their blades in my X-ACTO knives. Long story short, the blades did not easily fit so I decided to buy not only the OLFA knife, but many of the different blades that go in it. All of the items I have tried are made in Japan and are of the highest quality possible. Just be careful - wear safety glasses and realize this brand of blades are extremely sharp!

If you're looking at this item, then you may have used other brands of art/hobby/model knives. You are probably familiar with the blades falling out, warping, uncomfortable handles, rolling around on your work surface and overall low-quality experience using them.

The OLFA AK-4 suffers from none of these issues. It a couple small issues common to all art/hobby/model knives, which I will elaborate on, but I do not hold these faults against it. There is nothing better.

- Part 1: Chuck -

The most common issue with these style of knives is what is called the chuck. That is the little 2 part metal holder that secures the blade. It is usually a rod that is sectioned into 2 pieces and the outside has a gradual taper followed by a male screw thread. The body of the knife has a tube with an inverted taper and behind that a female screw head. When the chuck is screwed into the knife body, the 2 tapered areas (called the jaws) press into each other and close the gap between the 2 halves. The blade is placed between one of these gaps and held in place as the chuck is screwed tightly.

This is where the problems happen. 2-part chucks allow the blade to slip if there is any gap between the blade's tang (the 'back' of the blade) and the body of the knife. When you combine this with the fact that many hobby knives have chucks that are made out of plastic or polished soft metal, you have a recipe for disaster. A blade slipping, even slightly, is a sure-fire way to injure yourself or ruin your work.

To the OLFA AK-4! The AK-4 has a 4-section metal chuck. One division bisects the entire head of the chuck, and the other is only partially grooved. The fully cut chuck sections allow the chuck tighten on the blade as described previously.

I have used X-Acto knifes since I built my first model airplane over 30 yeas ago. Instead of improving there products they are getting cheaper and made in China. I have been looking for a better hobby knife for work and around the house. I think I have found it. I have not had this long but so far its much better. It has a little weigh at the blade end. This design really grips the blade, I cant stand it when the blase starts to slip during use. The only surprise I had is the yellow handle is plastic. I thought it was going to be painted die cast aluminum. It is a good quality plastic though, I think its glass reinforced nylon. I just hope this does not strip out. Ill let you know if I have any problems.

I bought this to use to cut paint protection film and it worked really really well. I haven't use the other blades but the fact that this shape like a pencil allow precision while cutting the ppf on my car.

I do digital and cut graphics for a sign shop and a good craft knife is a vital tool. My old one was nearing its last legs and I came across this one.
I like the heavy feel of this one, and it's quite comfortable to use. The extra blades are a bonus. The only "drawback" is that you have to seat the blade deeper than shown in the product's picture to prevent it from shifting during use. Not a huge con, but there are times when I need to trim alongside items that are difficult to get to with the handles width.
