Product Description

This OLFA rotary mat does more than just protect your work surface. It also extends the life of your rotary blades. Use the marked side of the mat for precision cutting, the solid side for general cutting. You'll notice that the gridlines include angle markings; this makes tricky tasks, like creating true bias strips, much easier. Vary the location of your cutting to allow the mat to self-heal. Particles stuck in the mat? No problem — just erase over them with an art gum eraser. The mat is great for quilting, sewing, cutting out patterns, rotary cutting, general crafting, scrapbooking and more.

I purchased the Olfa Cutting Mat through my local quilting shop - at the recommendation of the owner, who has pieced countless quilts and advised even more quilters. In her opinion, this was the best mat for the price. And, since we are friends and fellow-business owners, she is someone I trust.

The size works well for me (24" x 36"), and I have cut strips / squares for two quilts now using my mat. In spite of the fact that many of the cuts are in the same location, there is no indication of even a scratch on my mat. The size is also great since I have been able to use it in several different locations to cut my fabric - including a store counter.

While I know many mats will do the same thing, I have only used this one. And, having both the grids and the inches marked on the one side has made it possible for me to accurately measure my fabric. The other side is unmarked for general cutting.

Because of how it has worked for me, I give it five stars.

bought one from the local store, thisis a much better price. I now love cutting fabric, its fast and easy with the measured clear ruler and the fiskars cutter, quilting is fun again.
***a year later , cannot think about cutting without this mat, just buy it and a roller cutter.

Any "self-healing" cutting mat gets 2 stars, and this gets an extra star for being reversible, but that's as far as it goes.

This mat is very thin. This is my third mat (last one purchased 12 years ago) and it is only half the thickness of my previous mats, which causes a real problem for me. Because the mat is so thin, the lip of my quilting ruler doesn't catch well and keeps slipping...do I need to point out how frustrating and how many yards of fabric ruined because of this? Because the mat is so thin and flexible it requires a really hard, smooth surface underneath or the mat curves and bows under pressure. This is an issue for me because I am short and like to do my cutting on the floor, and it is impossible to use this on a plush carpet or uneven floor or even an uneven table and get cuts straight and perfect (no problems with the other mats), and I had to cut a piece of plywood to put under it (which is a pain and extra expense). Because this mat is so thin, it really needs to be stored flat or it will develop a curl. When I noticed how quickly it curled resting on the floor against a cabinet, I drilled a couple of holes in it so it could hang on the wall as I just don't have another flat space to store it.

While all "self-healing" mats will eventually score, this has scored quickly. Using brand new blades, after several dozen strips being cut, I have permanent scores where I was cutting. Not only can I see them, I can feel them when cutting.

My final complaint is it stinks -- a skunky sort of smell. I can smell it when I walk into my sewing room, and I have to take frequent breaks from cutting as the smell gets to me.

Like another reviewer, I've had several of these mats for years and years with no obvious wear. Amazon's everyday price on both sizes is much better than the regular retail price at my local fabric store.

Olfa makes very good, long-lasting cutting mats. This is the fourth I've purchased over the last 20 years . . . not because they wear out (the first one I bought is still just fine) but because I need a mat every place I could possibly want to cut . . . sewing room, of course, kitchen, bedroom, and this new one is for our camper trailer. You can take the girl away from the quilt room, but then the girl just has to take the quilt room with her! I write quilting patterns and make all my own design samples, so the mat(s) are used often. No problems in the last 20 years . . . never had to retire an Olfa mat, but have used up a couple other brands.

I bought this cutting board to use for quilting. I love it! I even use the board and rotary cutter for cutting patterns. Its perfect for my needs and has no sign of wear even though I have used it quite a bit. I store it flat under a pile of things under my bed and still I haven't scratched it or damaged it at all.

I bought this cutting mat because the reviews were good. Maybe I got a dud or maybe it's just not meant for daily use...but my mat does not self heal and has started cracking along the edges. It didn't self heal even from the beginning but has progressively gotten worse. It also cracks just from being bent a little or from cutting down the same line over and over (I sell items I sew and use the same cutting lines frequently). I've used my mat almost every single day for the past 3 years sewing. Amazingly enough my smaller Dritz mat, which I've owned longer and used just as much, still looks brand new. It's time for me to buy a new mat and I'm probably going to go with Dritz or maybe Fiskars, either way, I'm done with OLFA.

Great resealing mat at a usable size. Plastic odor is sure hard to get rid of.
