lounge lizard's lullaby,

This review is from: OM Lounge, Vol. 6 (Audio CD)
Being a big fan of the Om "Lounge" series, in addition to their terrific San Francisco Sessions, I bought his disc on shear impulse, confident of immediate listening rewards. It almost blew right over me. It's so subtle in it's overall approach; I didn't catch on until the latter half. In working my way back, I began to understand the UNDERSTATED nature of this entire affair. Starting with "Find An Oasis" by Block 16 and finishing with the magnificent "So Far" by Larcarno & Burns, this offering has more in common with the recent Naked-Music Recordings than previous Om Lounge outings. Toss in some random funk, with deep house and you have late night adult listening at it's finest; overtones of classic jazz and soulful vocals permeate downtempo at its very bottom. "Verano" by Andy Caldwell, "Dance Naked Under Palm Trees" by Mo Horizons, "ddr" by Orbital Experience, and "J'avance" by Rollercone highlight timeless tunes mid-stream through. I get mental images of all sorts of "s" words I won't use here. I will say, it should sends some shudders through your spine, perhaps a few extra palpitations too boot. Welcome the night. Welcome to the groover's lounge.

...and it feels so good! This one is denser, lusher, more atmospheric than the previous 1-5. Listening to these tracks I imagine myself at Rincon in Munich or Bar Hamburg, late at night. Like black coffee, bittersweet chocolate, cognac and a little of your favorite voo-doo...nice. What I like about these SF hipsters is that they're not afraid to take some risks, delivering material that is, aside from unconventional, mostly unfamiliar. Yes, it's been hit-or-miss at times in the past. OK with me. But this one...remarkably "OM"!

When I saw this on the racks I immediately grabbed it (already having Om Lounge 1-5, and loving them). But then I hesitated. Maybe THIS would be the one where they fall flat on their faces. Vol. 1-5 were so great; THIS one would finally be the dud. WRONG. (Thankfully!) Another fantastic addition to the OM Lounge series. I can't wait til #7 comes along. Always great exposure to new artists that are more than one hit wonders.

The label and the artists are capable of soooo much more. See OM lounge vol 3, for example. Starting to pump 'em out without regard for quality. SLOW DOWN and take care.
