Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Onkyo's affordably priced TX-SR500 surround receiver offers a wealth of inputs and surround-processing choices. The unit is fully compatible with Dolby Digital and DTS surround encoding, as well as with Dolby Pro Logic II, which generates 5.1-channel audio from any stereo source--including VHS tape, cable and radio signals, and MP3 files. The receiver even has a set of multichannel analog (RCA) inputs to accommodate the decoded surround output from a DVD-Audio and/or SACD-compatible disc player.

With nine DSP (digital signal processing, or simulated surround) modes, a range of digital and analog inputs and outputs, and Onkyo's A-Form autoformat detection, the TX-SR500 is easy to set up and use--and versatile enough to integrate the newest technologies with your existing home-theater equipment. Each of the receiver's five channels is capable of continuously delivering 65 watts RMS (into standard 8-ohm speakers), and Onkyo's Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT) ensures clean, high-current power from 10 Hz all the way out to 100 kHz, supporting even the most demanding DVD-Audio and SACD programs.

The receiver's power stage uses discrete output devices for all channels, and extruded-aluminum heat sinks for its high-current capability. The TX-SR500 is versatile enough to handle nearly any of the combination of full-range and mini satellite speakers found in today's home theaters. Easy-to-use setup menus let you specify the type of speakers in use, and onboard digital-processing circuitry directs bass signals from digital sources only to the speakers designed for low-frequency reproduction. In addition, the receiver's subwoofer-channel processing includes a variable crossover circuit, which you can use to optimize the sound for your subwoofer.

The receiver offers composite- and S-video switching, and both coaxial and optical digital-audio inputs accommodate signals from devices such as DVD players, gaming consoles, minidisc players/recorders, satellite receivers, and DVRs (digital video recorders). The front panel features both composite- and S-video plus audio inputs for easy connection of equipment such as camcorders or MP3 players.

The receiver also includes an FM/AM tuner with 30 station presets, a digital, optimum-gain volume control, and a full-function, preprogrammed remote control. A sturdy, solid-aluminum front panel and dot-matrix fluorescent display round out the component.

What's in the Box

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent value even if it is, July 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: ONKYO TX-SR500 A/V Home Theater Receiver (Electronics)
I purchased my Onkyo TX-SR500 from J&R six weeks ago and I am delighted with it. I can't comment on it's attributes as a home theatre system since I am using it in stereo mode with only two speakers. My system also includes a 13 yr. old Onkyo cd player and 30 yr. old KLH model 5 speakers. As such, it sounds great, a very nice improvement over the 15 yr. old sony receiver it replaced (obviously, I don't upgrade components until they stop working). It provides strong, tight bass response as well as very clear, detailed mid and high end. I know it's a cliche, but I am hearing a lot of details in the music that I never heard before.
Regarding the refurbished aspect, there was an almost invisible cosmetic blemish on the edge of the faceplate. Otherwise, it appears as new. Consumer Reports called this model a "very good performer and a very good value" even without the steep discount as a refurbished item. I agree completely
