Book Description

An Irish ex-boyfriend, a
New York newspaper editor,
a movie star, and a Hollywood agent -
the men in Phred's life cause her nothing but trouble.
So the last thing she needs is to become one of the paparazzi.

Story:

When Dublin newspaper journalist, Phred, is dumped by her Irish boyfriend, Finbar, she runs off to New York to make a fresh start. She ends up working as a journalist for a newspaper in Manhattan.

Set in a snowy November in New York, Phred's world is filled with romance, humour and excitement involving her attractive newspaper editor, Royce, gorgeous movie star, Bradley Goldsilver, and handsome Hollywood agent, Vaughn.

Royce sends Phred out one night to a New York movie premiere. Phred is a journalist, not a photographer, but Royce wants her to go.

Her assignment is to glean a candid shot of movie star, Bradley Goldsilver, at his latest movie premiere. No mean feat. Especially as every other big burly paparazzo with their eye on the money is vying for the same.

Phred, a reluctant paparazzo, does something outrageously out of character to get the photograph she needs - and ends up in the headlines herself.

Phred gives a whole new perspective to the world of the paparazzi.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just loved it! January 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ok, the book is totally improbable and unrealistic, esp given the time frame. HOWEVER, that detracts not at all!

What I loved:
It was CLEAN. A little kissing and that was enough.
It was FUNNY. I snickered and snorted and laughed out loud. In the dark. While my family was sleeping.
The characters are likeable - even the not so likeable ones. I found myself rooting for them all. They each have a "personality". Phred still maintains her own "self" even with the craziness surrounding her. I like that she doesn't just fall into a man's arms and live happily ever after. She has a purpose and a vision and a life and she makes room for a man in it, but the man doesn't DICTATE her life.
The setting is well written and i could "see" everything.

What I didn't love:
Ok, I know this is totally cliche. But it just was too short. I would LOVE for Ms. Black to flesh this story out some more. Each of the characters could EASILY have a spinoff story. A backstory on Finbar and Phred's relationship in Dublin? (Sucker for Irish settings, that's me)

Potentially objectionable content:
There is an instance of flashing, but it isn't gratuitous and it isn't "icky".
There is also some language, but it isn't gratuitous either.
I'd let my mom or my daughter read it. Well, my daughter will wait a couple of years, but it's fine for a teen in my opinion.

If you look at my other reviews, you know that I'm not just gushing to gush. I hope I get to see more of Ms. Black's work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick Fun Read January 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am not in the age group that chic lit is aimed at (being older then dirt), but I have immensely enjoyed the 3 stories of DeAnn Black's that I have read. This one was delightful, the only problem being I would have loved for it to continue. But, when an author leaves you wanting more that is not a bad thing!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Oops I'm the Paparazzi January 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A kind of cute story, but I don't care for the swearing, especially the "f" word. I probably won't buy one of her books again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny quick read February 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This quick read would make a great chick flick! It truly made me laugh out loud in public lol. Phred was such a great witty, strong and loveable quirky character which you couldn't help and root for her all the way from the first page.
I love reading novels which paint the woman as a strong individual who can overcome everything that is thrown at her and boy was this novel perfect for that. It had everything that I loved to read about (romance, humour and mischief...i really like the mischief part lol)
The author definitely did a superb job with this novel!! I am definitely reading more of her work.

I'm sorry to say that I didn't read this but only a few pages because of the language in it. I can find terrific books without having to deal with the swearing, so I didn't keep going with it. sorry!

2.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly boring heroine. May 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Phred is an Irish girl working for a newspaper in New York City. She takes a turn at being a paparazzo for a day by flashing and getting away with winning shots, prompting a mega-star actor to hunt her down. Her life changes forever.

WHAT I LIKED:
- I love the author's writing style. It's witty, funny and warm, prompting me as a reader to immediately go with the story.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
- There's no nice way to say it so I'll just say it: Phred is a Mary Sue character. Mary Sue is that irritating girl in your class who not only knows everything, but also does everything. Phred is Mary Sue: everything she touches turns to gold. She takes paparazzi pictures? Pics win awards. She gets a free house for editing a screenplay (what?!), she edits screenplays in six hours because she's superwoman who takes no breaks, she writes screenplays that turn into megablockbusters. Add her superhot editor, her ultra hot and rich agent and her ultra hot and rich ex boyfriend who are all in the mix to fight for her hand. Did I mention that this all happens within a year? Sound perfect? Yes, TOO perfect. In fact, her problem is that she's so perfect everybody wants her. Phred has no personal journey to undertake. Everything she churns out is a smashing success. Result? No adversity, no growth. Phred is perfect as she is and stays the same throughout the story. Hence, there's no real conflict, no personal transformation. The story bombs in my books as the heroine is too perfect for my tastes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really Fun to Read January 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story was very enjoyable to read. The Cinderella feel of the story, lively characters, and interesting events made for a wonderful afternoon of reading.
I would have given it a full 5 stars had the story had a solid ending. I really wanted to know what happened to Phred.
I will definitely be looking for other works from this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Where's the ending? January 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I must say, I enjoyed this book and would've given it 4 stars if it hadn't ended so abruptly. I liked the story, and although it was a bit unrealistic (maybe just idealistic?), I'm a sucker for a happy ending. As much as I do enjoy a happy ending, I like some sense of realism as well. BUT, the book just ended...no resolution for any of the characters. I'm assuming that there will be a sequel and I sure hope so, but I would've like at least some sense of resolution. Also, and this is just being nitpicky, I realize the author is Irish, but if she is going to write characters that are American, she needs to make sure the dialogue rings true.
