The packaging and the presentation of this player is an extra treat to the customer, the construction quality is superb and most of all the reproduction quality of images and sound is remarkably better than the ones delivered by the average $150 player. If you invest in a home theater of some sort start with a good foundation and get a good signal source like this one.

The Oppo BDP-103, as is expected from pretty much any Oppo product these days, is nothing short of amazing. It offers playback of every format disc you can think of (except HD-DVD unfortunately) and this is where the "Universal" monicker comes in. It is NOT a region free player out of the box, and if you want region free you will need to resort to mods (the USB mod is the simplest, requiring the least amount of effort and knowledge on the end user's part, and I completely recommend it over all other mods).

The difference, for those that are wondering, between the BDP-105 and BDP-103 is:

105 offers HDMI, 2xUSB, Coax, Optical input (1 USB is for file playback, other is for connecting a PC for asynchronous playback)
103 only offers HDMI and 1xUSB for file playback

105 has SABRE DAC ES9018. This is an analog user's best friend.
103 has Cirrus Logic DAC (good, but not as amazing as the SABRE)

105 has built in headphone amp.
103 does not

105 has dedicated balanced and unbalanced Stereo DAC, and a separate unbalanced 7.1 DAC
103 uses same DAC for all functions

Both the 105 and 103 can be used to replace some functions of your AV receiver, but the 105 includes more inputs over the 103.

If you need the 105, you will know it. And if you really want/need the better analog experience, it's the way to do.

The only other option you might be looking at is the BDP-103D or 105D. The D indicates it is a Darbee edition. This puts the Darbee Visual Presence technology in the video path. This is supposed to increase detail without impacting tonal quality or otherwise negatively impact video performance. It can also be turned on and off on the 103D and 105D, so if you think that might be something you may get use out of, maybe look to spend the extra $100 MSRP for it.

With all that out of the way, what about the player itself? It's well built, well designed, has no internal fans for less noise (you might hear the drive mechanism, but I have not yet experienced that), and it outputs video using the Qdeo video processing (which you can also control in terms of how much or how little (or even "none") it processes the images). Add on reference level audio output and you have what is the best performing Blu Ray/DVD player on the market today (if you don't want the awesome analog capability of the 105 that is).

It can play back DVD-video, DVD-audio, SACD, CD, and Blu Ray. It can playback USB (make sure you are using USB2 devices and that if you are using an external hard drive, ensure it either uses external power or does not pull more power than the player can provide, otherwise you run the risk of blowing out the USB port). It is also very simple to find region free mods for DVD and Blu-Ray region selection for playback of discs from every region.

Highly recommended.

This was bought as a gift for my husband, and he is still bragging about how awesome this player is. He loves being able to use one unit to play multiple formats.

I can't give this unit enough stars. I had a problem at first (later resolved), and to explain, I'll just paste the feedback I sent Oppo: "I just wanted to strongly suggest that in the packaging for your bluray players, that you include a large info sheet...one which can't be missed strongly urging your customers to use the HDMI cable which you supply with the units. I've been in hi-fi long enough to have a prejudice that cables are really not that essential to performance. I was dead wrong when it came to connecting up your player. Originally, when I recently received the BDP-103 which I had ordered from Amazon, I decided to just plug it in to the same old cheap HDMI cable which had been connected to my previous bluray player. At first, I was somewhat disappointed with the performance of the 103; it gave my ears the impression of being worse than the SACD player and the bluray player I had before. Seemed to have a gritty, almost distorted and a touch shrill sound. Honestly I was close to sending it back. Then, I decided to do one last thing, and that was to use the higher quality HDMI cable you had supplied. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! My system has NEVER sounded so good!! The clarity and staging with this player is simply phenomenal! I'm going to Amazon to leave good feedback now!! Thanks!!!"

If a family of four goes to the movies once per month for a year and they pay $10 per ticket, it is costing them about the same amount as this wonderful player costs.
But some families like to get out of the house every now and then and watch their favorite movies in marginally comfortable chairs with hundreds of strangers who aren't always necessarily respectful of those around them.
Then add popcorn and soda and you're almost doubling the price.
So, stay home and make you're own popcorn (and drink something else besides soda) and enjoy movies in your comfortable easy chair for years to come.
Don't get me wrong, there are some movies that need to be seen in the theater. Go see these blockbusters there but save the rest for your own home theater. Seriously, you can wait until the Blu-Ray release.

Awesome sound and blu ray output. Feels and performs like what it costs, recommended. Lots of options, and the remote, while well made, is hard to see at night. While the buttons light up, a lot of the important text is printed beside the button rather than on it, so illuminating the rubber button is kind of useless...

But, who cares when you see and hear a Blu Ray through this. Simply amazing, depth and color like you have not seen before.

Well packed and nicely presented.

The other reviews will be technical. As for me suffice it to say I tried to cancel my order after feeling guilty investing 500.00 in a DVD player. I was too late, item was already shipped.Am I glad it was not canceled!!! This machine is the best consumer product I've purchased in years!! It screams quality from the moment you open the box. After 5 minutes it was up and running. A most noticeable upgrade in picture quality AND sound quality immediately apparent! If you have any qualms about this product..I will assure you .... It is worth every penny !!!
