As an audio player, let me say again, this model does as well or better than the previous model 95.

The Digital Volume Control on the BSP105/105D There are those that malign digital gain, but with the Oppo, I am not one of them.

It makes my Sony Bravia TV look like a much better TV; much more natural pixelation, colors, and fluid motion control.

If all you want to know is what I think of the Oppo BDP-105D, please know that I very much admire this product, and I highly recommend it, then read no farther. If you are carefully researching the Oppo BDP-105D and need detailed information about the Oppo BDP-105D AND someone's actual hands-on experience with the 105D Oppo prior to pulling the trigger, then read on. You have found the right place.

Included here along with my personal BDP-105D experiences is a short excerpt from the original and necessarily lengthy professional review that you should find very useful. AVS, Audioholics, HomeTheaterReview, The Absolute Sound, and Stereophile are good sources too, and those reviews are thorough, detailed, and long. Read the full BDP-105/105D reviews on these sites as they are better than any BDP-105/105D Amazon amateur review I have read, and that includes mine.

SO WHAT IS THE 105D LIKE?

I never was a fan of the Swiss Army Knife. I never was a fan of ANY all-in-one tool or gizmo. Such things, to me, were flawed designs, almost a joke. But this Oppo thing is an entirely different concept.

I've only had it for a day, but the sound is great, and I don't hear the leanness that others have mentioned, in fact it is nicely neutral to warm. 100% satisfied. The audiophiles out there will be happy to know that it really benefits from better interconnects and a good power cord, but even the stock power cord and humble cables are fine.
The headphone output is very listenable also, nice and direct, if not with the refinement of a high end headphone amp, but still fine and usable and musical, not a cheap add-on.
Oppo is one great company for this quality at this price. If I heard it was $2000 or $3000 I would easily believe it.
I tried the Darbee enhancement and it really does do nice things to video images, so it's certainly worth the extra cost IMHO.

One extra nice capability that can be overlooked and I have not seen mentioned before:
the excellent Darbee video enhancement can be used when watching regular TV (from your cable/satellite or DVR box).
Just send the HDMI output from the cable box to the Oppo's HDMI input. Then, to watch TV, just use the Oppo remote to choose the HDMI input selection.
Then, you can use the Darbee button to customize the picture as you like in real time, and it's lots of fun.
It makes my Sony Bravia TV look like a much better TV; much more natural pixelation, colors, and fluid motion control.

As an audio player, let me say again, this model does as well or better than the previous model 95. The idea, which has been passed around about DAC assignment is misleading and untrue. This model has the similar main out sound quality, using the differential balanced DACs as the model 95, yet notion of multiple DAC stacking is based on an amateur assumption, which is irreverent!

What is relevant here is the audio DAC USES NEW ESS SABRE32s main DACs amd these are the best Oppo has used to date, they are ESS Sabre 32S, is a high-performance 32-bit DAC not usually ground in audio gear in this price range!

Sure, my Esoteric K model and DV model have a better sound however, the DV model was new at the price of $6000, and the K model costs $`14,000, hardly a fair comparison! What these both do better is upgrade the sound of conventional CDs, and it plays SACDs with the finest sound quality imaginable! Neither has HDCD decoding, which the Oppo has, and the Oppo plays all DDD CDs better than most all CD players, under $2,000, did five years ago.

The Oppo 105 gives you high quality audio sound, worth the costs alone, not to mention,, it has the ability to play DVD and DVD Blu-ray, is fully HDMI compatible and in capable of playing 3 D video material. This player makes its competition look like second rate, in the case of the Marantz, Cambridge, and Arcam, or very overpriced, in the case of McIntosh.

If you have this model Oppo, using the balanced cables, as you would for music, then when you switch to mufti-channel, the higher quality stereo DAC will still operate your main speakers. Choose the main XLR output to your balanced amplifier, or processor and connect the remaining channels to RCA jacks, nicely laid out on the back.
