Good Product - Bad Seller!,

This review is from: OPTICON OPN2001-00 OPN 2001 POCKET MEMORY SCANNER USB 1D LASER SCANNER (Electronics)
This barcode scanner does not work with Ubuntu 11.4. You might be able to perform some kernel mods to get it to recognize the scanner device itself, but as far as retrieving the data, you're outta luck in Linux. But the scanner works GREAT! The reason I didn't give it 5 starts is because the engineers should have allowed the device to be recognized as a removable storage device with a raw text file to access your scanned data.DO NOT BUY FROM THIS SELLER (Surveillent). Am I the only person that orders merchandise from Amazon and returns it if it's not what I expected? I've done this dozens of times here at Amazon, and hundreds of times across the entire internet. I have NEVER received a response like what I received from Surveillent (parts have been omitted for relevance): Me: This device is not recognized by Ubuntu 11.04. I cannot use this device without Linux compatibility. Surveillent: OK it sounds like you made a simple error in research and didn't fully research the manufacturer part number OPN2001-00 before you purchased to make sure it would work for your application. 1. Has the shipping box been opened or it still sealed by us? 2. If the shipping box has been opened have you opened up the product or is it still factory sealed? Me: 1. Yes the shipping box has been opened. 2. Yes I have opened up the product. Surveillent: Any reason why you didn't research the manufacturers specifications for this manufacturer part number OPN2001-00 OPN before the sale? This would have saved us both a lot time and money. The biggest problem we will have is that the manufacturers factory seal can't be broken. We state this in our return policy and we only sell brand new products that are factory sealed. If we don't get any refund from the manufacturer and there distributor then we can't give you any refund. Can you make this look absolutely 110% brand new and factory sealed? It will go through a vigorous inspection so it must not even have so much as a fingerprint on it as we need to sneak it by our return investigators to be brand new and factory sealed. Me: There is no "factory seal". The box has no tape on it, and the 3 packages on the inside were taped closed with plain scotch tape, which was removed without tearing the plastic bags, and reapplied just as it had arrived. I'm quite surprised at your email. Are you aware of how your product was even packaged? Not nearly in the manner you have described. Since there is no factory seal, I suspect you are not being 100% honest with me. So you're going to charge a restocking fee? That too I have NEVER been charged for any electric device I have returned. I would quite rather keep your product, let my kids play with it until it breaks, tell all my colleagues not to purchase from you, and write an honest review at Amazon about my experience in dealing with your company. Surveillent: OK good to hear it is sealed because as stated in our return policy we can't accept returns that have been opened. So after restocking fees your final return amount will be and you will need to pay for the return shipping using UPS or FedEx. We quite often waive this restocking fee for customers if they remain professional and friendly throughout the return process and we can recoup these fees from the marketplace and manufacturers distributor. Me: I will be writing a negative review with Amazon for this transaction. Surveillent: Because you didn't research the product before you purchased it? That would be against Amazons policy. Do you want us to notify Amazon or are you going to communicate professionally to try and get this mistake you made resolved? The problem I have with returning their product at this point is that they are not being honest about the "factory seal" so why should I trust that they will accept the return and not simply send it back to me saying they couldn't "sneak" it past their inspectors or resell this item? Why continually tell me I made a mistake by not researching the product? I am used to opening a product, testing it out, and returning it if it doesn't perform as expected. ALL credible retailers accept returns as this. I'm also not happy about being charged a $30 restocking fee either, but had they been 100% honest about the factory seal from the start (and not continually told me I made a mistake - not professional even if they are right!), I probably would have bit the loss and returned it. I hope this review is helpful to everyone who reads.

I bought the Opticon OPN2001 pocket memory scanner to use to scan bar codes from my collection of books. With the books being on the second floor and the computer with the card catalog software on the first floor it was going to be many, many trips up and down the stairs carrying an arm full of books (maybe 6 - 10) each trip. This scanner saves all of those trips. I scanned nearly 200 books in about a half hour and they are now uploading into the software. The reason I purchased this particular scanner is because it is supported by Readerware 3.05 (book edition) - Readerware's auto-catalog feature reads the ISBN numbers from the scanned bar codes and then locates them in online resources (such as Amazon). I can have my 1500 or so books cataloged in a single day. Further the scanner itself works extremely well. All I had to do was pull the book part way off the shelf to expose the bar code and press the button so that the red laser intersects the bar code and it stores the value. I've no doubt that it could store 1000 bar codes, but I'll be cataloging my books by the book shelf. If you are looking for a cataloging system I highly recommend this remote scanner and Readerware software (note: there are music and video editions as well as the book edition).

Good cheap portable barcode scanner - rechargeable via usb port unlike Symbol CS1504 which uses button batteries - both have similar capabilities. I used in a Java programing project which I had previously done using the Symbol CS1504. Scanner was code compatible with a couple minor exceptions - use Symbol documentation if you want to program directly in Java using Java Com or the OPN2001 API documentation if you want to use JNI with the OPN2001 supplied dll
