Electric chainsaws have always been clean and quiet, but they've generally lacked the brawn of their gas-powered brethren. The Oregon PowerNow CS250-S6 40-volt Max cordless chainsaw shatters these shop-worn stereotypes, delivering a powerful, muscular performance with every cut. With its tough 14-inch bar, the PowerNow can power through logs as large as 10 to 12 inches, or cut up to 125 to 250 2- to 3-inch branches nonstop on a single charge depending on standard or endurance battery. Whether you're removing trees, cleaning up after a storm, pruning large branches, or clearing debris from property, the PowerNow chainsaw is up to the challenge.

CS250 user wide
Smaller and quieter than gas-powered chainsaws (view larger).

Part of Oregon's PowerNow 40-volt Max battery platform, the CS250-S6 trimmer comes with a standard battery pack (1.25 Ah) -- providing up to 60 minutes of continuous use -- as well as a charger. It's also available in a model with an extended battery pack (2.4 Ah) as well as a version without a battery pack or charger -- a great option if you've already purchased a 40-volt Max battery (or several batteries) with other Oregon cordless tools.

Power Without the Hassle

The PowerNow chainsaw starts instantly with the pull of a trigger: no frustrating pull cords, no messy gas cans, and no slow warm-up times. The chainsaw is also much quieter than gas-powered chainsaws, and is completely silent between cuts. And weighing at 11 pounds (with optional standard battery pack), the CS250-S6 chainsaw is easy to wield whether you're cutting a tree trunk below you or a tree branch above.

More importantly, the CS250-S6 offers these hassle-free benefits without sacrificing an ounce of power. The chainsaw cuts with no-fade strength, so you can keep cutting with the same intensity even as the battery drains to a quarter charge or less. Plus, the lithium-ion PowerNow 40-volt Max battery pack holds its charge for months at a time when inactive, so the CS250-S6 chainsaw is ready when you are. You can also keep additional PowerNow battery packs on hand for bigger jobs, as the interchangeable packs swap out in seconds.

CS250 sharp
Built-in PowerSharp sharpening system -- from dull to sharp in 3 to 5 seconds (view larger).

Sharp and Safe

The chainsaw comes with a built-in PowerSharp chain sharpening system, so you'll never cut with a dull chain again. When the chain starts to lose its edge, simply pull the PowerSharp lever for three to five seconds with the saw running and the chain will work like new.

To protect you while cutting, the PowerNow includes such features as a built-in safety chain brake, a low kickback chain/guide bar, a safety trigger interlock, and a patent-pending control board with overload and heat protection.

Product Description

The OREGON PowerNow CS250S6 40V Max* Chainsaw Kit with Standard Battery Pack is a lithium ion battery-powered chainsaw that delivers a combination of performance and features that makes it a true alternative to many gas-powered chainsaws. For removing trees, cleaning up after a storm, pruning large branches or clearing debris from property, you can depend on the OREGON PowerNow 40V MAX* Chainsaw. The OREGON PowerNow Chainsaw, with its lithium ion battery pack, offers instant starting without a pull cord, powerful cutting with no-fade power, and long runtime. It is a smarter, quieter way to work free from the hassles of gasoline or cords. When not in use, the lithium ion battery pack holds a charge for months at a time, so the PowerNow Chainsaw is ready when you are. Equipped with a 14-inch bar, the PowerNow Chainsaw can power through logs as large as 10 to 12-inches. For smaller cuts, the CS250S6 chainsaw goes non-stop, cutting up to 125 two to three inch branches on a single charge. This performance may vary with user technique, chain sharpness, size and type of wood. The PowerNow Chainsaw is much quieter than gas-powered chainsaws in use and is silent between cuts. At 11 pounds, the PowerNow Chainsaw is lightweight, easily portable and offers ergonomic comfort. Not only is the PowerNow Chainsaw powerful, but it is free from the hassles of gasoline or power cords. The PowerNow Chainsaw starts instantly with the pull of a trigger – no pull cords, no gas, and no warm-up times. The PowerNow Chainsaw features the PowerSharp built-in chain sharpening system so you’ll never cut with a dull chain again. When the chain dulls, simply pull the PowerSharp lever for 3 to 5 seconds with the saw running and the chain will work like new. The OREGON PowerNow CS250S6 Chainsaw Kit features the 1.25Ah B500S 40V MAX* Battery Pack. The B500S has no memory effect, charge maintenance and full discharge is NOT necessary to retain consistent capacity throughout the life of the battery. A completely discharged B500S battery pack will take approximately 60 minutes to charge. (*Fully charged battery voltage measured without a workload is 40 volts. Nominal voltage is 37)

I walk my property with my dog frequently and am forever seeing trimming and cutting that I want to accomplish. I never want to gas up, oil and use my Stihl 038 Magnum immediately upon seeing a trim job. It is too heavy and loud for the quick trimming of a limb or the fast work of a downed branch.

I had the opportunity to sample this saw recently and I must say it is excellent.

The saw itself is very light in comparison to my Stihl. I found myself climbing up my ladder with it off, setting up under the branch I wanted to cut, pressing in the safety and then the trigger and quickly cutting what I needed.

I like that the saw is not continuously running. It is safer while walking with it and especially when among a brush pile where one can trip up easily.

I practice "self - preservation" so I try to work smart and avoid accidents with power tools, especially chain saws. I never like walking with a running saw, you trip up and that is when issues can occur. My comfort level with this tool was such that I could lift the saw above my head frequently to cut high branches, the weight was nice and after cutting I would release the trigger thus stopping the chain. With my gas saw I am always nervous about doing this and possibly bringing the saw down onto my leg while the chain is spinning. A heavy saw comes down quicker and you fatigue after using it but I really feel comfortable doing MORE work with the battery saw as when you release the trigger it is off and thus safe.

Because you power it on only when you need it, the battery life was very good. I cut all that I set out to cut and had power to spare. I had two batteries and worked with one for approximately an hour before swapping to the second.

I'm not a big fan of chainsaws: I don't like the noise (whether I'm using one; or I have to listen to the neighbor using one); I don't like the gas and oil mixing; I don't like trying to find non-ethanol gas; I don't like the starter pull-cord; I don't like leaving the chainsaw idling while I'm moving around, and I don't like hand-sharpening oily chains.

The Oregon PowerNow 40 volt chainsaw doesn't have any of the above issues: so I gave it a try ... and I Love it! (Or at least I used to: see update below.)

For me, the best use is cutting up hardwood trees and branches smaller than 6 to 9 inches in diameter. It is most efficient when bucking. When felling, any additional friction on the chain from the weight of the tree tends to eat up the battery a lot faster. But for bucking wood into woodstove-size pieces this tool is the cat's pajamas. And it can be used to fell a few trees on a charge.

The saw weight of 10.5 pounds is reasonable. And the saw really does cut best if you apply no downward pressure and just let the weight of the saw (with sharp chain) cut through the wood. I can sharpen the chain without removing or touching it, just by pulling a lever on the saw for 3-5 seconds while the chain is moving.

I'm sure there will soon be lots of competition in this market, but for now, Oregon PowerNow has a winner on its hands.

Update: after 10 months of ownership I'm knocking one point off my rating because the design of the kickback brake is sensitive to getting messed up by spilled chainbar oil. When you overfill oil, it can run into a recess where the brake lever pivots. This area is not user-serviceable. Enough spilled oil and wood dust and the brake lever won't stay in the run position. Happened to me twice.

I own and have used a number of gas and electric chainsaws. My first impression of this saw is very positive. It appears to be well made, handles well, and is easy to trigger.

We used it to cut through a variety of wood, ranging from branches less than an inch thick, to a fallen spruce tree 14 inches in diameter. The power was sufficient to pull the PowerSharp (3/8 inch low profile) chain through almost anything we asked, as long as we let the saw do the work.

Battery powered saws are not for everyone. If you cut big timber, like to lean on your saw, or expect high revs, they are not for you. If you do occasional cutting, need a grab-and-go saw for maintenance tasks, don't want to (or can't) store gasoline, this is one you should definitely look at.

The saw is much quieter than a gas chainsaw; about as loud as an electric reciprocating saw. The noise stops when you are not actually cutting. There are no 2-cycle fumes. There is no pulling of a starter rope or the frustration of a hard-to-start saw. No gasoline to buy, mix, store, or dispose of.

It is too early to comment on battery life. As with any battery operated tool, work stops while the battery is recharging, so you should plan you work accordingly, or consider an additional battery for extended cutting.

I have been pleased with the PowerSharp chain on other saws, so I expect similar results on this one.

EDIT: I have been using this saw now for almost 2-1/2 years and have had a very positive experience with it.
