J. Gresham Machen produced an amazing response to liberal scholarship surrounding the topic of the origin of Christianity in the lectures contained in The Origin of Paul's Religion. Machen meets scholars on their level to refute mistaken notions about the origin of Christianity; he is thorough, well read, and clear in his arguments. As far as relevancy, Machen's lectures may as well have been delivered last year. Machen delivers a stirring apologetic supporting the supernatural origin of the religion of Paul, and in turn Christianity. The church will always be under attack and we must be grateful for men like J. Gresham Machen who have defended it to the end.

One of Machen's more academic works as a biblical scholar. This is a thorough treatment of Pauline theology in response to modernist biblical studies (higher criticism, comparative religion, etc.). Thesis: the "origin" of Paul's religion consists in the historical facts constituting the redemptive gospel of Jesus Christ. He refutes modernist interpretations of Paul that cast him the light of naturalistic comparatives on the one hand, and moralistic spiritualism on the other. Rather, Machen argues, through the variety of his ministry, Paul preached the revealed and properly supernatural message of Christ crucified, died, buried, resurrected and ascended for the redemption of all those who are united to Christ and his righteousness through faith. This work is significant as a defense of historic Protestantism equally as engaged in biblical scholarship as the contemporary modernists in Germany and elsewhere.

The more we study Paul the more we come to know him and just how inspired, motivated, and important to early Christianity he was. He felt he was being used by Christ to spread the Gospel to the heathen, and he was wildly successful despite the many hardships and threats he faced. Everyone should come to know Paul better.

The book did have some poor printing, but for the price I can not complain. Every thing went as it was supposed to. Would buy from seller again if they have what I need.

This is a well-written and incisive masterpiece in which the late Gresham Machen, who died in 1937, uses all his deep and broad knowledge, and scholarship, to take to pieces, bit by bit, the horrendously poor scholarship and presumption of 'liberals' who sought to dismiss Paul's Christianity as though it was distorting that of Paul's master, Christ.

Machen tackles the various views and shows how they are poorly thought-out and self-contradictory, being inadequately grounded on the evidence of the time; that Paul's version of Christianity either could not or did not arise from contemporary Judaism or the heathen classical world; that it had a source in the mid-first century, and that that source would have been as Paul himself relates it: the risen and ascended Christ of both history, the Pauline corpus, the rest of the New Testament, and what we know from the ante-Nicene fathers and the secular historicans of the day, both Jewish and Gentile!

Machen does not pull his punches. Nor should he. He shows, in his view, that the 'modernist' re-writing of the facts is the really distorting prism and that, as then, the detractors of the apostle Paul are the ones who are denying what the Chief Apostle and Bishop of our souls gave us through him!

This book was an enjoyable and informative read which I completed in a couple of weeks.

Both the binding and the print are high quality, though it is a paperback; and I would most heartily recommend it for all ministers and serious students of the historical and theological origins of Christianity.
