Most of the reviews for the Original Umbrella Stand (with thumbscrews) seem to mention use on a grass lawn for soccer games and picnics. I live in California and this works PERFECTLY in the sand at the beach. Even with the high winds at the beach, I have never had the umbrella fall down or come out of this stand. I have the stand with the thumbscrews but I have yet to tighten the thumbscrews. I think the thumbscrews are nice to have in case it does come out but so far, they have been unused. Now I laugh when I see someone at the beach try to dig a hole in the sand to put their umbrella deep into the sand.

Going back to the time I ordered and received this stand I am perfectly satisfied. I wanted to find a reasonably priced umbrella stand and this one fits the bill. I received it well ahead of schedule and was able to use it in my backyard for the 4th of July! I recommend this product to all who need an umbrella stand and have to economize during this day and age!! You won't regret it. Enjoy. :-}
