O'Reilly Street: Best of Both Worlds,
By M.C. (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: O'Reilly Street (Audio CD)
O'Reilly Street hits the spot by blending appealing, baroque-inspired themes to perfection with hot, Latin jazz rhythms. Sir James Galway, the world-famous flutist, joins Grammy-nominated, Cuban music group Tiempo Libre in a high energy set. Features a fast-paced, exuberant interpretation of selections from the Bolling Suites, plus several new works composed/arranged by Tiempo Libre's Jorge Gomez. At age 69, Galway shows no signs of slowing down -- "the man with the golden flute" is as agile and amazing on this album as on any of his recordings of past decades. And, in temperament, he has found a good match in Tiempo Libre. All in all, O'Reilly Street is a great-sounding CD that only seems to improve the more times one listens. Highly recommended for fans of classical, as well as jazz and Cuban music.

Wonderful!,

I fell in love with the Bolling Suite in the 80's. Rampal's version was wonderful and I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the new "style" of for this suite but I was wrong. The mix of flavor and style along with Sir James' amazing technique and tone takes this music to a completely different place. In addition, the other tracks (not from the Bolling suites) are amazing and great additions the this jazz/classical flute style. If you enjoy jazz and/or classical you will enjoy this music for years to come. If you are a flutist (like I am) you will be searching for the sheet music immediately but it isn't yet out (if it ever will be). While you can get the original arrangements for the Bolling Suites, I'm hopeful they will publish these arrangements as well.

O'Reilly Street Galway and Gomez Tiempo Libre Best of Both Worlds,
By
This review is from: O'Reilly Street (Audio CD)
"This is such a great album! It really combines the best of two amazing worlds. Tiempo Libre's virtuosity and rhythmic charge are irresistible. And, of course, there is a reason why Galway is considered the greatest flute player in the world. His chops are unparalleled. But that sound - absolutely bewitching. Put Galway and and Tiempo Libre together and you get an album that is impossible to stop listening to. There is such joy in all the music-making. This was obviously a labor of love for everyone. Definitely check out the video about Galway and Gomez. It's clear there was a real person bond and affection that spilled over into the music."

James Galway's flute I've known of for a long time, but only came across this gem when trawling for Tiempo Libre after enjoying their equally classy and enjoyable "Bach in Havana". Superb musicianship across both genres (latin jazz and classical) and in the capable hands of these musicians, a much more perfect stream than most "Third" offerings. Get it if you don't have it already !!

Intense Transnational Ensemble,
By Kevin L. Nenstiel "omnivore" (Kearney, Nebraska) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: O'Reilly Street (Audio CD)
This recording began as an attempt to hear Claude Bolling's music for flute and jazz piano trio in a new way. Combining the mixed classical and Celtic influences of Sir James Galway with the four-part Latin jazz of Tiempo Libre, this album re-imagines that concert hall fare as transnational dance music. With fleet-fingered piano and flute at the high end, and a three piece rhythm section, it's a rounder, more organic sound, more like something from a street fair than a rococo auditorium.
The major focus is on Bolling's music. Pianist and band leader Jorge Gomez crafts exciting new arrangements that are unique to this experience, without losing sight of Bolling's vision. Galway is as different from Rampal as two musicians can get while still playing the same instrument. He brings his renowned expressivity to the ensemble, and doesn't lapse into mere egoism; he is truly part of the band, and allows the whole ensemble to shine. There are a few original Jorge Gomez compositions in here, which, while no one will ever mistake them for Bolling, are seamlessly integrated into the whole. Finishing out with a new arrangement of J.S. Bach's famed "Badinerie," this unique ensemble expresses its refusal to be tied to others' limiting expectations. The power and energy of this music isn't quite like anything you've ever heard before, yet it's so pervasive and universal that it strikes a fundamental, transnational human chord. I'd recommend this album to anyone who loves classical music, world music, Latin jazz, or any sound that refuses to be tied to a slick marketing label. Rich and nuanced, it rewards multiple listenings with intense new insights. I haven't heard music with this kind of clear, straightforward power in a long time.

This is my second Tiempo Libre CD. I love their style, and since I am also a fan of James Galway, thought this purchase would be excellent and it certainly is.

A great fusion of Latin jazz and classical influences, a wonderful background to dinner parties, reading, and even close listening for the melding of cultures.

Afro-Cuban Meets the Irish,
By Webfoot (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: O'Reilly Street (Audio CD)
This CD is a lot of fun. Tiempo Libre is up to the challenge of playing with one of the world's great classical musicians. I have heard Galway play jazz before, but his playing sounded all wrong. His tone is too pure; his technique too square. However, this blend of Afro-Cuban and well-polished classical flute worked well in the O'Reilly Street performances. Tiempo Libre is an amazing group. Galway's beautiful singing tone made a wonderful combination with the Cubans' stylings. It's a good price, too. You won't be sorry if you buy it, and you will probably listen to it over and over again.

If you like Galway, Tiempo Libre, Cuban music or light Latin jazz this is a no brainer. Jimmy always delivers the goods. This Latin spin on some foundation jazz compositions of Claude Bolling`s is delightful. The rest of the album is the whipped cream, nuts and cherry.
